772.0. "Spreekt U Nederlands, Katje??" by MEMORY::BERNSTEIN () Tue Sep 15 1987 05:54

I already placed this note in ASKENET, but someone thought one of
you folks could help me, so why not? I love my cat. Well...

I have a CAT (yes, a cat: small, furry, feline-type creature) in
Belgium waiting for his master (namely, me) to send for him. I
got him when I was working there before I started at DEC.

He is stranded there (living off coconut milk - no, no, he is really
with friends of mine) since I am told that the expense in shipping
any animal (with cage) costs on the order of $200. I don't like
to put a pricetag on the little critter's head, but in my present
financial situation, this is prohibitive (and kinda silly). I am
not planning to visit the country for quite some time, and none
of my European friends can bring him (for one reason or another).

I would like to know if anyone is planning to travel from Brussels
(Zaventum) to Boston (Logan) in the near future, and would not mind
bringing him on their flight. All health and logistic arrangements
will, of course, be taken care of (by myself and my Belgian friends
in Antwerpen) so as to minimize the hassle that I cause anyone.
This is my last attempt to bring him here, and if this cannot work
out, he will remain a Belgian cat (*sniff*).

If you can help me (or point me in the direction of the proper notes
file to ask for this sort of thing), please call me at DTN 237-2713 or
at home 1-617-799-3975. This is greatly appreciated.

                                     Thanks, .steve.

Hi. I have a DEC-friend who is currently at DEC in Ireland and is
coming back to Mass next Monday (Sept. 21). I can't volunteer for
him (although he is a cat owner himself...) but if you can get the
cat to Ireland, he might be willing to bring it the rest of the
way. Let me know if you'd like me to ask.
Also, I'm sure there must be DEC people in Belgium who make trips
to the U.S. on business. You could get a friend to post something
    at the facility there.

Sorry, but cats cannot go in or out of England, Scotland, Ireland,
etc. unless they experience an excessively long quarantine period.
This is because there is no rabies existing on the Motherland, and
they want to keep it that way. (One of my friends is a British
girl who would have been happy to oblige (bring the cat, that is)
but because of their restrictions, it would have been impractical)

If anyone is flying from Brussels and merely stopping in London
on their way here, it is STILL not allowed to bring animals
    along. Too bad...

I don't know anyone in Brussels that works at DEC... (*snif*)

What about Geneva? Would that have stiff quarantine?

I know all about GB - brought a part Scottish Wild Cat back home
when we moved back to the U.S. Have you contacted Pet's International.
They are not quite as expensive for shipping animals. Do you know
the name of anyone at DEC Belgium that may be able to help. I don't
personally know any people but on ELF, there are two people with
the last name "VanLaer" - might be worth a try.

(I only found them since that is the only time I have seen that
    sur-name outside my immediate family).

Be glad it's only $200. It was over $2,000 to bring my two back
from Guam (and it's also a rabies-free island so no quarantine was
    required on this end).

    Good Luck
    Ellen
