709.0. "Nutrient Deficiency" by WALTZ::BOWEN () Fri Aug 14 1987 16:36

Just found an article on the last page of todays Boston Globe
about a deficiency of an amino acid called taurine that has
been found to cause the deaths of "tens of thousands of pet
cats every year" (reprinted without permission) through
heart disorders (cardiomyopathy). The interesting thing is that
Hills Science Diet is one of the two foods mentioned as having
the lowest content of this amino, Purina Cat Chow is the other,
and although both companies have taken steps to correct their
product, the old product is still being sold untill it is out
of stock. I've been feeding my two Hills Science since January.
The article didn't mention C/D which they grew up on and I will
switch back to. Vegetarian diets are also mentioned as having
    a lack of taurine.

By the way, research into this problem is spilling over to heart
problems in humans much like FLV and AIDS.

We also had the article in Friday's paper out here. Ironically
called the the vets on Friday about something else so asked them
about it. They, while I was on the phone called Hills to find
out what had been done. Hills stated that they had always had
taurine in the food but not at high enough levels. They have made
corrections and now have taurine at the recommended level.
