661.0. "SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT TWIST ON FLEAS" by VAXWRK::DUDLEY () Mon Jul 13 1987 21:35

I'm currently cat-sitting two cats who are utterly flea laden.
I don't want to bring the fleas back to my three. This morning,
after my first visit, when I got in my car, I looked down to find
fleas crawling all over me. I almost had a nervous breakdown!
I jumped out of the car and starting flailing away at myself.
Must have been quiet a site. While in the house, my head started
itching and I was pretty sure some were in my hair but I couldn't
believe they would get all over me like that. DISGUSTING!!!!

Before going to work, I stopped in at the vets to get some flea
powder. I'd really like to powder myself and I was thinking of
putting a flea collar around my ankles when visiting these cats.
For now, I immediately powdered the inside of my car and I'm
praying that I don't have any fleas on me when I go home tonight.

I'd really like to know what you'all think about my wearing a flea
collar around my ankles and powdering my clothes before I enter
this house. Will I poison myself?

661.1Cat flea repel. is mild stuffEUCLID::PAULHUSChris @ MLO 8-3/T13 dtn 223-6871Wed Jul 15 1987 14:4712
See note 600 for my background with the varmits. In addition
to ridding the house and cat of fleas, I looked into protecting
myself. Flea repellant for cats is relatively mild stuff - it has
to be because cats lick their coats and ingest the stuff. So, despite
the warnings on the cans, they can be used, with precautions, on
us. I used the spray on my lower legs, arms and hair - I didn't
trust powder in my hair to stay out of my eyes. The precaution is
to keep the stuff away from any body opening or skin damage (cuts, etc).
I really think highly of the aerosol bombs - they did the trick
of cleaning up the house. By powdering the cat's topside and spraying
his underside and feet, I've rid him of fleas. Good Luck - Chris

Thanks Chris, I had read note 600 and all others concerning fleas
before entering my note, just to see if anyone had ever sprayed\
or powdered themselves. Yesterday I powdered myself quite lib-
erally before entering the house (to clarify - these cats are in
'their' house, not mine). Despite this, I still had a few live
fleas on me when I left.

I feel terribly for these two cats. They are well loved but
not groomed, etc. very well. Frederick, who seems to have all
the fleas on him, is also allergic to them, so he has these
scab like things all over him. Frederick goes outside and
unfortunately brings the fleas in to Kryssie, a deaf, white
    persian, cute as a button.

Where are the owners of the cats? Is it possible for you to reach
them and seek their assistance in ridding the cats and their home
    of the fleas?
