620.0. "LOOKING FOR PLAYMATE" by CANDY::COOP () Fri Jun 12 1987 20:30

    I HAVE A VERY LOVABLE CAT WHO STAYS INDOORS ALL THE TIME.
    SHE HAS NO DESIRE TO GO OUTSIDE AND WE'RE VERY GLAD OF THAT
    BECAUSE SHE IS DEAF. I DO HAVE ANOTHER CAT BUT HE'S MELLOWED
    IN HIS OLD AGE. SHE'S ATLEAST 16 MONTHS OLD AND AS PLAYFUL
    AS EVER. I WOULD LIKE TO GET ANOTHER KITTEN FOR HER TO PLAY
    WITH--ONE THAT WOULD STAY INDOORS WITH HER. IT MAY SOUND
    UNUSUAL BUT I WOULD PREFER THE NEW CAT TO BE DEAF ALSO-I REALLY
    BELIEVE IT MAKES MY CAT MORE LOVABLE. I AM IN THE SOUTERN
    NEW HAMPSHIRE AREA AND WOULD APPRECIATE THE HELP IN FINDING
    MY CAT A PLAYMATE. DTN 261-3457---CANDY::COOP

620.2Have you tried the shelter?SQM::MURPHYIs it Friday yet?Tue Jun 16 1987 19:4013
    I have a friend who did the same as you in searching for another
    deaf kitten/cat to keep her's company. A shelter assisted her in
    Mass. Have you tried the Nashua Humane Shelter on Ferry Rd., Nashua
    yet? June is "adopt a kitten/cat month" and according to Mike
    Philbrook (a DEC volunteer at the shelter) they always seem to have
    a good supply of cats, kittens, puppies, and dogs for adoption.
    They also do behavioral tests on the animals up for adoption so
    they should know if any are deaf. Usually, it's the white cats
    and kittens that are deaf, I understand.

    Good luck.

    Try calling the Boston Cat Hospital: 617-266-7877

    They try very hard to place not only the cats/kittens they
    have room to take in, but also have list of "those who have
    extra cats/kittens," "those who want cats/kittens," etc. --
    and they take the trouble to try to match what you want
    (e.g., they will help place an FeLV+ cat, although they
    won't keep it on the premises). Someone may have called
    them asking for help placing a deaf or possibly-deaf cat!

    They'll keep your name on file, anyway, just in case!

    (No, your wanting another deaf cat does not sound strange.
    I know several people who have adopted children with certain
    medical problems because they had experience with a non-adopted
    child with that problem and felt they were able to cope with
    it! Should work the same with pets, I guess.)

    Good luck completing your family!
