575.0. "Looking for large enclosure/cage" by HUMOR::EPPES (Make 'em laugh) Sun May 03 1987 03:31
The situation is this: We are having our carpets cleaned this week,
preparatory to putting our apartment on the market (anyone interested
in buying a 2-bedroom cooperative apartment in Burlington, MA, just
off Rte. 128, minutes from the Burlington Mall? :-) ). The main reason
they need cleaning is because of my cat Jasper's, uh, indiscretions
(discussed in another note or two). Once we get the carpeting cleaned,
we need a way of keeping him off it when we're not home (he is still
"indiscreet" occasionally, sigh). Also, we want both cats secure
when the aprtment is being shown to prospective buyers, as we don't want
them suddenly running out the door or something. So, I'm thinking about
some type of enclosure we could keep them in on the balcony or
something. I saw the perfect thing at the Nashua Aquarium & Pet Store
(a fairly new place). It was a wire cage-type thing about 2 feet wide,
4 feet long, and 4 feet high. The sides and the top were wire, and the
bottom was (presumably) wood or something, covered with linoleum. There
were 2 carpet-covered platforms spaced at different heights above the
floor. All the edges had hook-type fastenings so that it could come apart
easily, and there was a little door for cat access. It was just what I was
looking for. It was also $220.
After I got my breath back, I decided it wouldn't be all that difficult to
make such an enclosure myself. So what I'm looking for is advice on what kind
of materials to use, where I can find such materials, what's the best way to
build it, (i.e. how to make a door for the cats and what about getting a
litterbox in and out), etc. Anyone got any suggestions? I need this info
quickly, as the carpeting's being cleaned on Thursday....
(Suggestions on where to find a ready-made enclosure for less than $220,
like $50-$75 [ho ho], also welcome!)

575.1 | Have you looked into the possibilty of renting a cage? | VAXWRK::SKALTSIS | Deb | Sun May 03 1987 15:38 | 1 |

| I suggest you don't go to that store again. The cage you describe is
commonly available for around $100 or so from the vendors who have booths
at nearly any cat show you go to. Here are two that we've bought stuff
from:
Haddeleigh House
Martha Krueger
(somewhere in Maine)
207-676-3309
Summit Pet Products
Marvin & Harvey Reich
(somewhere in Maryland)
301-622-4357 (after 6 or 7)
If you give them a call, they'd ship one right out to you. Or, they'd tell
you when's the next cat show they're going to reasonably local to you, and
they'd be sure to have one with them you could pick up.
Last years' Summit catalog entry read like this:
Item #16-4, General Cage no.69 - 22"Wx35"Dx46"H, comes with roller
base, two shelves, and a tie-on scratcher. price $93 qty 1 (east
coast), free shipping via UPS.

575.3 | Is $150 any good? Or wait til July to borrow! | GLINKA::GREENE | | Mon May 04 1987 00:17 | 20 |
| I've got two of them, but I can't loan them out until the
(due-any-day-now) kittens are born.
If you need one quickly, Boston Pet on Charles St in Cambridge
(across street from Lechmere) retails them for $189, and I have
a 20%-OFF coupon you can use. Still not as inexpensive as the
vendors mentioned in -1, but probably quick enough.
The shelves are great. Momma-to-be, now in her "confinement"
(pun intended), loves to perch on her bed on the top shelf.
(The bed is pinned securely in place, and as she has plumped out,
I have lowered the shelves for her convenience and safety. She
used to be in there only occasionally, but now I want to keep
track of her for the count-down, and she no longer seems too
interested in prowling or jumping about.)
Leave a message for me at 617-492-6262 if you want to stop by and
pick up the coupon.

| Thanks for the quick responses! I called the place in Maine listed in .2
and talked to Martha Krueger, who was very nice. One thing I liked about
her was that she was concerned about the cats being in the cage all the
time -- she doesn't approve of that. Neither do I, and I hastened to
reassure her that they'd only be in the cage when we weren't home and the
apartment was being shown.
Anyway, she has the cage for $97, and it can be here by Wednesday (perfect
timing!), so I decided to go for it. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

575.5 | Extra-large Vari-Kennel | THRILL::PAANANEN | | Mon May 04 1987 16:09 | 10 |
|
When I had to keep a cat confined I used a German Shepard sized
Vari-Kennel. It cost about $75. It comes in two halves, top and
bottom (molded plastic) which bolt together. A small shelf could
be designed to fit in between the two halves. It looks just like
the plastic kitty carriers only HUGE. There was plenty of room for
the cat, a small letter box and the food/water bowls attached to
the door.
