568.0. "HELP--VISITING DOG!!" by VICKI::BULLOCK (Living the good life) Wed Apr 29 1987 20:35

    Help!!

We are going to be having a weekend company (family) in a few weeks,
and THEY ARE BRINGING THE DOG. This dog (poodle) is really great
(for a dog), and is used to living with two cats, and likes them.
The problem is my cat. She is 10, and is used to being the only
animal in the house. She is VERY territorial, and very protective.
I have seen her stand nose to nose (at a window) with a huge golden
retriever; growling, spitting, and throwing left hooks at him.
I once brought a half-grown kitten to the house, and she went berserk!!

Since we will all be sharing a relatively small space for the
    weekend--let's see--that will be 7 adults, a 9 year old girl, and
the dog, and my cat--I'm worried. My concern is that my cat will
attack the dog, and also that our nerves will not last the weekend.

    ANY advice will be appreciated!!

I would ask your weekend company to confine the dog to one particular
room (except for going outside, etc.) for the weekend.

Or, you could confine your cat....but it's HER house!!!

Personally I would have asked them to leave the dog home, but,
sometimes I know you just can't do that!!!

    Good Luck!

568.2You may be suprised...QBUS::MITCHAMIt's Spring...Time to PollinateWed Apr 29 1987 21:1812
I had a similar situation earlier this year.

My father-in-law visited over New Year's and brought his miniature collie along
for the stay. Our Tabatha, a 13-year-old Angora, is much the same as your
cat...very territorial and aggressive, and big enough to put up a fight, too
(15-pounds)! But, suprisingly, she became quite tolerant of his stay. She
didn't like him (he wanted to play too much) but she was tolerant. Hopefully,
this will be the case in your situation.

BTW, we kept the two separate (the dog in the basement) when we weren't home.

I don't know how well trained the visiting poodle is, but I know
whenever I take my dog to someone else's home where there are cats
I always make sure she minds me and stays away from the cats. She
lives with 3 cats and they get along famously so her problem is
she thinks all cats are her friend. As soon as she spots a cat,
she wants to introduce herself to them which could be dangerous
(for her as she's only 10 lbs.). Usually all I have to do is call
her name and tell her "No, stay" and she stays.

I feel if the cat wants to be friends, it will come to the dog and
if not, it will stay at a safe distance and they usually just observe
    each other.

    Good luck!

Also, you may want to prepare yourself for
possible "signs" of displeasure on your cat's
part. She may urinate/defacate outside the
litterbox, just to 'get even' with you for
bringing a dog into her house.
