You may not believe this but they actually sent me a flyer! Don't
ask me how I got on their mailing list. The farthest I've ever
traveled for a show is Seattle.

I have never had a cat in a show but would be very interested
in finding out how to do this and what do they expect to see
from the cat. Is it how they act or just how they look? I
    am new at this.

    Thanks..Jane

548.6tips for advance preparationsPUZZLE::CORDESJAWed Apr 15 1987 15:4727
Jane- what they look for and at depends on what type of cat you
are showing. If you are thinking about showing your household pet,
the judges are looking for a clean, well groomed cat that doesn't
object to being handled. The will look for signs of good health,
check ears for mites, look at teeth, clarity of the eyes, etc.
Household pets are generally judged according to the preferences
of the judge, in CFA there are no written standards for them. A
HHP that is well behaved on the judging table and relaxed about
having people handle him will generally do very well in the show.

There are lots of ways to get your cat ready for a show. The first
thing that I did was get mine used to being handled by other people.
Whenever anyone came over I would ask them to please hold my cats.
Also- get them used to the carrier and the car since you will have
to travel to get to the show and you don't want them to arrive all
    upset from the ride.

It is also a good idea to bathe your cat before a show so if you
have never given them a bath, now is the time to start. Always
a good idea to trim their nails first so if they become frightened
they can't hurt you(it is also a show rule in most associations
that the nails on all four paws must be trimmed)

I am sure that I have left something out but I want to give others
a chance to offer their suggestions. Showing cats can be alot of
fun, and I am sure that you will enjoy yourself.

Thanks Jo Ann, My cat is declawed so she won't scratch anyone but
she is extremely afraid of other people trying to hold her. She
is pure black and does strange tricks but other than that she
probably is an ordinary cat. I think that maybe she is mixed with
another kind of animal because of her behavior. She loves nuts
    and
picks them up with her front paws and eats them. Squirrel cat?

    Thanks again...jane

    Jane,

I think that declawed cats are not allowed in shows.
    Anyone have more information?

Too bad there isn't one ring for "cat tricks" -- that would
    be great fun to watch!

I do know that CFA does not allow declawed cats to be shown but
perhaps some of the other associations do. Does anyone have any
information about TICA, ACFA, ACA etc. I looked on one of my TICA
show flyers and it said nothing about declawed cats not being eligible
to show. Jane, when you call for the show flyer, ask the entry
clerk for the show what the rules are for that association.

548.13Update on New England Shows & Cranston,RITOPDOC::TRACHMANWed Apr 22 1987 20:4228
Yes - both of them - Yes I am showing! I have entered Yurii in both
Cranston, RI 4/25,26 & Cumberland 5-2,3. They both look to be really
fun shows! Hope to see some DEC folk there. Yurii took 2nd Best
of Best in Torrington CT on 4-12 (really exciting !!) and did
very well in Portland last Saturday (4th for the day). He now
has 5 shows under his fur, and seems to be liking them more
each time. He shook hands with a judge last Saturday - guess
that's an ok thing! There are a few more local shows - I will
update this note with the additons.

6-6 West Springfield, MA CFF - Eastern States Expo Fairgrounds

6-20,21 Lexington MA - TICA - (check this location) Nat'l Guard
                                            Armory

7-4,5 Boston MA - CFF - Park Plaza Hotel

Hope to pick up more notices this weekend - will add them as I receive
    them.

Anyone planning to attend the Cranston show, I hope you will have
time to stop by my cage and say hi - the DEC luggage tag will be
on the top left corner of Yurii's cage - (white cat - pink drapes).
