517.0. "Vote for a cat lover!" by EMIRFI::KEENER () Tue Mar 17 1987 01:23

Has anyone every read about famous people in history and the pets
they prefere/abhor? I read a story while living in Scotland, where
incidentally, cats have "a roving commission by order of the
king/queen". I belive it was Elizabeth I that started this - cats
are allowed to go where they want and you had best not mess with
them - it's actually against the law. Of course, in the rare case
that they may seriously damage or injure something/someone, steps
    can be taken.

Anyway back to the article. Napoleon, Hitler and the like hated
cats, while Churchill, etc. nearly always had them everywhere.
The article had a long list of bad guys/good guys and the tyrants
and dictators without fail seemed to hate cats - probably too
independent, free spirited and non-obedient for them.

I believe Prince Howel Ddah of Wales, before Elizabeth I, made felicide
a crime in his part of the England.

Prior to that, of course, there was the grand and magnificent
civilization of ancient Egypt (Khem) where it was a capital crime
to kill a cat. And _that_ civilization lasted in excess of 4,000
    years.

What about "Number 1" of SPECTRE from the James Bond movies? The
goal is to rule the world, but he always is shown with a beautiful
cat in his lap (but you never see the man's head).

Just throwing in the proverbial monkey wrench. :-)
