492.0. "Jungle Breath" by RHODES::BAUMANN () Thu Feb 19 1987 18:04

    Does anyone know how to prevent or cure cat bad breath?
    I have two cats -- a matched pair of 16 pound, red,
    alley cats named Castor and Pollux. Castor has terrible
    breath. His teeth seem to be o.k. He doesn't seem
    to be sick.

    Any suggestions?

    If "kittitosis" is the same in non-humans, then the cause is usually
    what the cat has eaten. Halitosis results from the gases collected
    in the stomach and exhaled. Mouthwash, gum, etc. only cover up
    the odor, not cure it. I would check what your cats eat. Mine
    get terrible "kittitosis" from tunafish - real "funabreath", but
    usually eating dry food gets rid of this.

492.2Amelia has bufalo breath tooPUZZLE::CORDESJAFri Feb 20 1987 21:308
    Amelia has chronic bad breath. Bailey doesn't have a breath problem.
    They both eat the same things, mostly dry food with some variations.
    I've tried brushing Amelia's teeth with her Micky Mouse toothbrush
    and peroxide but I get more peroxide on me than her teeth and she
    still has bad breath. Does parsley work for cats? I'm running
    out of creative/functional ideas.

    Have your vet check for tartar. A tartar buildup oftyen results
    in bad breath. Tartar can be scaled easily and makes the cat's
    mouth healthier.
