481.0. "Talking Cat???" by MED::NEWTON (What's snew?) Tue Feb 17 1987 14:45

    Snuggles (who is just now almost 6 months old) has decided he has
    a lot to say. I think he must be part siamese. He talks alot!
    He'll walk around and meow. Some of the sounds that come out of
    him don't always sound like meows. It's like he talks to himself.
    There are times I almost think he's trying to talk.

    Do male cats go thru some kind of puberty? I know female cats meow
    and make strange sounds when they are in heat. Do male cats go
    thru something like that? He hasn't started spraying yet, so I
    don't think he's looking for female cats.

    It's funny when I get mad at him and spank him. He'll run into
    the other room and start making these weird sounds, like he's telling
    me off in his own way.

    I hope he calms down after he's neutered. My husband is about ready
    to throw him out into the cold with all the mischief he gets into.

    If anyone can shed some light on his talking I'd greatly appreciate
    it.

481.1Sure...why not ?...25132::MITCHELLTue Feb 17 1987 15:0420
    I also have a male (Tigga) was talks quite a bit. He's 2 years old
    and has been neutered. I think it's just his way of getting
    attention. He'll go into another room and start his noises, then
    when he gets the attention of myself or the other two cats, he
    runs, jumps, dive-bombs, etc.. And...as far as getting into mischief,
    Tigga is a monster. He gets into most everything...went through
    a stage of chewing cords, and now he's into snooping and tipping
    over wastebaskets. I've got one female (Acorn - his mother) who
    is quite refined and just likes to snuggle and be petted. My other
    female (Kitty) is a demon like Tigga. She hides behind doors, and
    when she sees Acorn or Tigga coming, she jumps out and tackles them.

    It gets pretty hectic at times, but really, they are so much fun,
    and I enjoy their antics.

    So, enjoy the talking and the mischief....To me that's a good sign
    of a healthy and happy cat.

    The siamese talk alot. Cats have different noises made for different
    meanings (as far as we can tell). Ours make a rolling tongue sound
    when they run around a corner sort of like beeping a horn to alert
    other cats to avoid collision. They say the "ME" in meow means
    hello and the "OW" means I dont want to be touched. They claim
    thats why cats very rarely put the "ow" in around other cats and
    people they are comfortable with. By the way the they in the previous
    sentance refers to a magazine article I read, I believe it was in
    CATs magazine.
481.3My kitties do it too...PUZZLE::CORDESJATue Feb 17 1987 17:006
    Bailey is a female (spay), blue cream (some judges refer to her
    as blue cream torbie). She walks around our apartment trilling
    and talking to herself all the time. I guess I'm so used to it
    I thought all the kitties did it. I think its contagious, Amelia
    is talking to herself more and more now. Maybe they're both just
    a little looney tunes.

    HI...

    Both my "boys" talk too.... the cliche "talking" when dinner is
    being getting prepared (you'd think we hadn't fed them for weeks!)

    Merlin will chirp and trill (I like that description of it Jo .-1)
    when he is hunting (bugs, birds through the window, me, the other
    cat,etc) and also when he is bored and looking for excitement.

    Rascal (we think he is a Maine coon) will make "raow" noises almost
    constantly - when he wants to be fed, get let out, get fed, get
    let in, get fed, get attention, get fed (he asks for food alot....)

    Cats are not quiet.....

    Unnuetered male cats will call for females when they reach maturity.
    This isn't necessarily at the same time as spraying starts, some
    whole males never pick up the spraying habit. Your male might be
    calling for females, but like a female in heat, the noise they make
    is difficult to mistake. It is not your "normal" meow sound. IT
    is usually rather long and drawn out. Not all males do this so
    it could be that your cat is just a talker.

    Both our cats are fairly vocal,especially when it is time to go
    out and a bit too cold for their taste.They both adopt a very low
    profile when they hear the words "Sooty,Sweep OUT" and then complain
    loudly from behind the sofa.Once out,if Sooty comes across another
    cat in his territory he will come almost nose to nose and "yodel"
    for want of a better word but never howl or hiss.

    re .4 , I read in "Catwatching" by Desmond Morris that the chattering
    sound a cat makes when it sees a bird is the cat actually practicing
    the "killing bite" which would normally be administered to the birds
    neck.

481.7Another talking catPUFFIN::BLODGETTWed Feb 18 1987 10:2114
    Brewster, my 6 year old male has been talking since the day I got
    him. Some days he is more vocal than others, but most of the time,
    the minute I get in the door he will start talking and carry on
    for 1/2 hour or more. He will also start talking in the evening
    if he wants attention. He will go into the other room and start
    his "poor me, nobody loves me" story, and will run into wherever
    I am whenever I say "Brewster, what's the matter?" My other cat
    who is female, hardly every talks, once in a while in the morning
    when I feed them.

    Brewster's brother, who 'owns' my sister does not talk at all.

    I enjoy Brewster's talking except in the middle of the night when
    he starts his chatter loud enough to wake me up!
481.8I'm happy to know it's a healthy sign.MED::NEWTONWhat's snew?Wed Feb 18 1987 12:3013
    I'm really glad to see that my cat isn't the only talker. I beginning
    to think that maybe I wasn't a good mommy. He usually goes into
    a room other than the one I'm in and starts talking. I guess he's
    just telling me to come and find him. Sometimes, though, I think
    he knows he's doing something bad and just wants me to catch him.

    The female cat I had before never talked this much. He does wake
    up my husband at night when talks loud (so my husband says).

    Oh well, thanks for putting my mind at ease. The vet didn't think
    much of it either, since he found him to be a healthy cat.

    My two talk some. Male kitty more than female kitty. When they
    stop doing it for a while - I miss it! At night when I can't sleep
    it sort of is good company. Only time they wake me is when they
    walk on me!

481.10Unaltered males are noisy!!DONJON::SCHREINERGo ahead, make me PURRR...Tue Feb 24 1987 14:5113

    Well, the biggest talker in my house is Fire. But most of the time
    I think he's just trying to get the attention of the girls. He
    does talk (although with a different voice) when he hears a familiar
    car pull in the driveway or knows he's going to get a special treat.

    He's the most vocal of my cats, the girls never make a sound except
    "Little Fi" of course, who cries when she can't find either a person
    or another cat....I think she's afraid of being alone!!
