Congratulations! Too bad you can't cover the Bay Area in California
too, as I am looking for someone for the Christmas holiday. Good
luck in your new venture. I hope it is both fun and profitable.

I'd like to add the name of another pet sitting service in the Boston
area - it is "Pet Companions", run by a woman named Judy in Somerville.
They have looked after Amanda and Rebecca on a few recent weekends,
and we were very pleased with the service. Possibly a little pricey,
($12 per 1/2 hour visit, $6 for subsequent visits on same day) but
    the cost seemed worthwhile.
I don't know how far they're prepared to travel, however. (By the way,
I called Castle Keepers and was surprised to find they won't even go
as far as Medford from Lexington; the two towns are not exactly a
    million miles apart).

    Anyway Judy's number is 617-623 2758.

Why not do it a la Tom Sawyer. Your cats must be pretty special,
right? So you really should CHARGE someone for the privilege of
having the company of your cats for 11 days! You should hold out
    for the highest bidder...

    Kathleen,

You, um, wouldn't happen to be available for a day or two (in addition
to spending the night) to help me with my (?) first litter?
Unfortunately this is weekDAY (not weekend) in early May. If this
is at *all* possible, we could discuss compensation to take into
account that you might be using vacation time...

Any others out there with vet or semi-vet experience?

I'm in Cambridge, Mass, and can offer a private bedroom and bath
    suite for the "confinement."

(Yes I KNOW that 99% of the time all goes well...but even if I was
home and something unusual happened, I'd feel so much better if
there was someone with experience to advise, help, or laugh at me!
Maybe the fact that my first child's delivery had a last minute
emergency in the hospital -- we would have lost her had there not
been an alert nurse -- has me concerned about "that occasional
    problem.")

    Pet Sitter;

I use Sally Eldred to sit my 2 cats, She lives in the greater Maynard

pets, and plants. Really a nice service, brings in the mail, leaves
a daily report, accepts evening calls to see how the kids are doing,
makes going on vacation a vacation.

    Boston area pet sitters -

I just came back from a 2 week vacation and can recommend a
professional service, The Petsitter Connection. They are located
in Belmont and do nearby areas including Allston, Brighton. For
approximately $10 per 1/2 hour visit they feed, water, brush and
otherwise amuse the kitties. Both of my felines were less neurotic
than I'd ever seen them when I finally came home! (Of course, they
had knocked over everything in the house, too, but that's normal.)

What I liked most about them was their questionairre where they
find out what toys Tabby likes to play with, how often she throws
up hairballs, etc. Sort of yuppyish, but very reliable.

400.19WHAT ABOUT SECURITY WITH SITTERS???DSTR08::SMICKVan C. SmickFri Dec 04 1987 13:5824

This may strike some of you as being paranoid, but I worry about giving
the keys to my house and alarm system to any of these sitters.

It is not hard to imagine somebody making copies of the keys to your house
and then 2 months, 6 months or a year later coming back to rip you off, or
of selling the keys to someone else !

I know that some house cleaning services are "bonded", but I am not
quite sure what bonding means in that sense. I have asked Castle Keepers
and several others if they are bonded and they have said no.

For those of you who have used one of these services, did you:

    Take any special precautions?
    Do any investigating/checking?
Lose any stuff from the house?
    Lose any sleep?

Anybody know of any service that is bonded?

    Thanks

I have had two different people housesit for me and have had no problems
with anything missing then or later (some minor damage which caused me to
change sitters). Maybe I'm being too trusting, but both people
have been fellow DEC employees and I just couldn't imagine them doing
anything like that. I know that not everyone that works for DEC is
necessarily an honest person, it had a lot to do with feeling comfortable
after meeting them and knowing that I'd be able to find them later if
anything came up. I have been very satisifed with my current sitters
(Phil and Debbie Hampton), I think they take better care of my house
than I do!

I think the best thing to do is ask for some references, preferably
fellow DEC employees if possible. If all of their clients recommend
them and say they have had no problems, I think I'd feel comfortable
hiring them. Also doublecheck your insurance to see what it will
cover should something happen to THEM while at your house, or happen
to the house while you are not there.

After all, what could possibly go wrong? 8^)

This is slightly off the topic, but I've farmed out two keys to
my house to two fellow cat crazies. This is to deal with my
occasional imaginings of being loaded into an ambulance after
being squashed by a car and saying "My cats! Who's going to
    feed my cats?"

I also trade cat sitting with them. Fortunately, we can arrange
to not be away at the same times.

400.22ReferencesGRECO::MORGANDoris Morgan DTN 223-9594Sat Dec 05 1987 04:069
I think the safest option is to know the cat-sitter person. Second
best is to check references. I used a fellow DECie from the NOTES file
(didn't check her references, although she offered them) and was VERY
    satisfied!

Someone with whom you have some commonality (fellow DECcie, fellow
NOTEr, etc.) would probably be a better choice than a business,
but in any case you should ask for references unless you personally
know them or interview them and feel an instant rapport!

Any FELINErs cat sit in Cambridge?

I will need someone to help a friend check on my cats during
the last week of March (including Easter weekend). The
cat population will include a litter of 5 week old kittens,
which is why frequent visits will be important. And yes,
I will count the kittens when I return...no kittens disappearing
in coat pockets ;-) ["But it just jumped in there, and I found
it when I got home..."] All the cats and kittens would enjoy
play time as well as fresh food, litter, etc.

I'm afraid that I'm the (latest) guilty party for sending mail to
Kathy. After failing to reach the Kathleen Casey in an earlier
note (PARITY::CASEY), Kathy (WILVAX::CASEY) seemed to be the obvious
choice. Unfortunately, as you know, WILVAX::CASEY wasn't who I
was looking for. I have since sent mail to PARITY::SYSTEM who informed
me that the cat-sitter Kathleen Casey left the company (about 6
    months ago).

All this leaves me in my original dilemma -- finding a sitter for

Did you find a kennel recommendation? If not, you may want to call
Catnaps in Berlin (they're in the yellow pages under Kennels).
I have never boarded my cats, but once when I thought I might have
to, someone gave me this reference and I called and talked to the
owner at great length about her facilities. She seemed to genuinely
like cats and her kennels seemed as reasonable as could be expected
(cats only - no other animals). I believe she even had cages large
enough to board two cats together.

Anyway, please let us know if you find a good kennel to recommend.

I've transferred from Nashua to Colorado Springs so it's time for a
    new note.

My wife, Debbie, is an experienced pet sitter and would be happy
to take care of your felines (and/or other pets, including exotics)
while you're away. We live in Colorado Springs (Briargate) and will
travel any reasonable distance. She'll take good care of any animal
you have and her rates are pretty cheap too. She's "visited" pets at
their houses as well as house-sat, whichever you prefer. You can
contact her at home at 719-548-9641 or send me a mail message at
SSDEVO::HAMPTON (or call me at DTN 522-2028). Also, she can provide
references (including a DECcie or two).

This mightn't be the right string for this, but I couldn't find
    a better one:

Can anyone recommend a boarding kennel in the northern half of the
495 loop? Someplace that doesn't just put the cats in cages...I
could leave them at the bloody vet for that!...but actually allows
them space to roam and pays attention to them on a regular basis?

There's an ad in the phone book for "Holiday Pet Motel" under Kennels
in which they appear to claim that the cats are afforded climate-
controlled runs rather than cages. Anybody know anything about
    them pro/con?

If Groton, Mass. isn't too out of your way, the Sleepy Hollow on
Lowell Rd. (Route 40) in Groton boards cats. When I moved from
Groton, my cats were kept in a room in the main house and cared
for by the resident veterinarian's husband. The veterinarian's
office was a separate building from the house.

The nice thing was that the cats (though kept in individual cat
cages for their own safety) were let out during the day by her husband
(not all together of course) different hours of the day to exercise.
He also gave them individual attention and petting. You might give
them a call at 617 (or is it 508 now?) 448-2722 and check it out.

I'm a cat lover and "mother" of two who is willing to offer my
services to anyone in the Westboro area. I'd simply be looking for
an occasional exchange of services in return.

Overnights would be out of the question but I would spend considerable
time cuddling and pampering, not just feed and run. Other animals
    aren't a problem either.

I use for my cat sitting services. It is $7/visit and she will

	 Hi,

I'm a Digital employee and a pet sitter in the Colorado Springs
area. My love of pets and negative experience with kennels has
led me to offer my services to other pet lovers who want an
	 alternative to kennels.

If you're tired of retrieving a neurotic, drugged, ungroomed pet
from a kennel; if you're tired of the guilt; and if you want your
pet to stay in comfortable familiar surroundings while you are gone
on business or on vacation, give me a call and let's talk.

My service is flexible and my rates are reasonable.

I can't afford a lot, but would be more than willing to return the

AT any rate, if I don't need someone, I will still stop by and

I just used KAJAN Cat Care, mentioned somewhere in this particular
note. I was VERY happy with them. They came to my house and took care
of my 3 boys: fed them, groomed them, played with them, and
administered medicine. They also took care of the garbage on garbage
days and kept the litter box neater than I do. They are located in the
Westbory area and are bonded (not many cat sitters are). My husband
was highly impressed with them and we'd recommend them any day.

If you call them, tell them Barney, Gonezo, and Benjamin sent you.

    Hi,

I need someone to look after my boys during the week of October 23
    (preferably 21 October - 29 October, but 23 October - 27 October would
be okay too). Tasks needed are feeding, watering, sifting of litter
and spending a little time with them.

Both Bigfoot (11+) and Loki (8) have tested positive for FIP,
although they seem to be in remission. Loki has recently had two bouts
of FUS. Because of these problems, they need to be checked regularly
and shipped to the vet (Tufts) if there is any problem. We will set up
an account with Tufts before we leave, so there will be no financial
outlay on the party (or parties) who care for our boys.

Has anyone had any experiences with any cat sitting services in the
Leominster area? I am going to Flordia for 6 days the end of February
and will need someone to come in and feed and check on my 2 Persians
while I am gone. My brother and sister-in-law, who have one of my
cat's brother, took care of my cat at their house in the past. Since
then, I have acquired another. They are both on C/D, so I can't have
them stay with anyone who has cats and feeds them regular cat food.
They have both been sick this winter with FUS and one had a liver
inflamation and has been losing fur as a result. They are both fine
now, and I want to keep them that way! I also would be interested in
what this type of service costs. I tried a search for this topic and
    couldn't find anything.

You might want to do a search in this notes file for cat sitting
services. I think (but am not positive) that Note 400 has all sorts of
sitting services listed. I've used Kajan Cat Care and they are
wonderful and I highly recommend them. Although they are based in the
Northboro/Westboro area, the will travel the "metro west" area. Their
fees were (in 6/89) $10/day, $14/holidays & weekends. That is for only
one visit a day - they are a little higher for 2 visits per day. They
will not only take care of your cats (grooming, feeding, medication,
litter), but will also take in the mail, put the garbage out, etc. A
daily diary is left of what went on each day with each cat.

I also used Kajan Cat Care in September '89 and THEY ARE GREAT.

I was very impressed when I came home from getting married in NY and
found the 'daily diary', my mail, and very happy cats. her diary was
quite amusing: "Ivory was a little shy today, but Ebony talked to me
the whole time I was preparing their food. I turned on your radio so
they didn't feel so alone.....etc." - It was nice! It cost me $48 for
the 4 days (Thur-Sun) $10 weekdays, $14 weekends, but it was well worth
    it..............I highly recommend them.

They are based out of Westboro, but woman I dealt works in Worcester,
lives in Clinton and I live in Boylston, so they do cover quite a wide
    area in eastern mass.

More information on them in note 400.

Jazzercise instructor at ZKO, in case you might know her. She lives in
Manchester, but has to go to Nashua every day to teach class, so she
might be able to help you out.

I recommend her highly. She is professional, responsible, and has a
    lot of love to give!

I know of one other cat-sitter who lives in Bedford, NH. If the
situation with Sarah doesn't work out, send me mail, and I'll get the
other contact's name for you. Good luck!

I was recently away from home for a week and used a pet sitting
service for the first time. I was very impressed and pleased
with these people. I have two dogs and two birds. They came
to my house three times a day, fed everybody, took the dogs for
walks and played with them...they let the birds out and talked and
played with them. They will do all the other house sitting type
things (bring in the mail, turn lights on and off, etc). This is
a fairly new business in the Worcester, MA area and I would
	definitely recommend them.

PS...I also felt their charges were quite reasonable for the
	     service they provided.
400.75Cat Sitters in Needham,Ma?STAR::LAMM::LAMMWed Jun 06 1990 00:0012
Does anyone know of any sitters that would visit my house in Needham, MA?
Would the Kajan people go that far? I would also be willing to trade
sitting/visiting duties with someone who lives in the Needham/Wellesley Hills/
Newton area. I have two cats, Fred and Wilma, and a pet field mouse named
Lucky6, a gift from Wilma. Sitting duties would be minimal - they are outside
cats, just need to make sure they have food and water. The mouse hides in
his toilet paper-tube house (in his cage) when anyone comes near, so he's
no problem to feed and water. If you are interested in swapping time, send
mail to VMSDEV::Lamm.

I'm in need of a cat sitter this summer and I was wondering if anyone
has heard of "PAM-PURRED PET SERVICE"? Or if anyone know of somone
in the Groton Ma area that will care for 2 cats 2 gerbals and 2 fish
    tanks.

I'm thinking of using a cat sitting service in September and would like
to know if anyone knows what is available in the Chelmsford, MA
area. Also, does anyone have a current phone number for Kajan cat
care? The phones numbers listed in note 400.36 are no longer in
    service.

I have two cats. They go in and out as they please using a cat door.
One of them requires some amount of human contact each day. The other
one is fairly independent. I'd also be willing to exchange cat sitting
services with someone else in the Chelmsford, Westford, Groton, etc.
    area.

    Thanks,

400.78Cat sitting for ChristmasMARKS::PAPULAFri Aug 31 1990 15:2019
I am looking for someone who would be willing to stop by and feed my
two little critters or provide a foster home for them over the
Christmas holiday (Dec 22-Jan 1). I know its only the beginning of
Sept. but we are going home to Pittsburgh, PA and airline tickets
have to be bought. With the crisis in the Gulf I think the sooner
we buy them the better! I haven't called any of the services like
Kajan Cat yet as I was hoping to find someone a little less expensive.
With the tickets, a rental car, cat sitting and all the other things
we may end up with no presents to give when we do arrive.

Anyway, if anyone knows of someone who could help I would appreciate
the help. Chelsea and Macavity are no problem to take care of. They
only need fed, litter changed and a few loving words with a belly rub
    and they will be set.

My DTN is 273-5567 and my home number is (508) 481-1246, thats in
    Marlboro.

My husband and I planned a trip to Poland and our neighbors vacation
schedule overlapped ours. So we looked for a cat sitter. Although
we live in Marlborough, MA we chose to have BEST FRIENDS in Worcester
take care of our Russian Blue, Miko. The thing that "sold" us was
their initial get-acquainted visit as well as their 2-visit-per-day
care that is included in their base price.

Now, actually, we did not have a chance to use their services; it was
how they responded that was special to us......

My husband was in an auto accident a week before our planned vacation.
BEST FRIENDS (Coe & Elizabeth) held our slot, made an extra trip to our
house to get our keys (in case we might be able to travel)....AND they
brought a lovely bouquet of flowers to my husband. (Elizabeth's brother
suffered a head injury in an car accident about 10 yrs. ago)

My point is that not only does BEST FRIENDS seem to have a good
    business, they have compassion.
(Elizabeth made friends with Miko on both visits--and Miko enjoyed
a "playtime" when she usually chooses to do "lap time"!)

I heard mention of the following Pet Sitting Service. They do

I've just been introduced to a wonderful service: Cat and
house sitting! This small service company stops by my house
and takes care of my 2 cats while I'm on vacation. The sitter
will alternate lights, bring in the newspapers & mail, feed and
water the cats, scoop out their litter box, and most importantly,
play with my cats for about 30 minutes giving them the TLC they
    deserve.

A friend of mine here in the Costa Mesa, California office
recommended the service, and I'm so glad. Now I can leave with
my husband (also a DECie) on trips, and have the cat-sitter
come over every other day to check on "Casino" and "Maui". This
service will come over as often as twice a day, if I prefer. It's
    only $10.00 a visit.

I don't know if we are allowed to advertise in this notes file, so
if any readers out there want more information, please send me a
    vaxmail to:  SWAM1::WEYER_JI

Bye for now, Jill (Casino & Maui, tabby cats)

Louise, there are places like this in Mass. There is a service in
Westboro called Kajun that is very good. If you check the yellow pages
there should be several pet sitting services available to the general
    public.

I see at least two pet-sitting services listed in our (very) local paper
all the time (in Mass). I'd suggest checking into your options at least several
months in advance, so you can have plenty of time to check out references and
make reservations.

Also, there are quite a few topics in FELINE on this subject already, though
I couldn't find a keyword. Most have the word "SITTER" or "SITTING" in the
title of the topic.

some day..

"Thanks" to the moderator who moved my note to the appropriate area
    in this conference.

I had no idea Pet Sitting was so popular that it would be advertised
in the yellow pages. I am glad I found out about this type of service
from a personal referral, since you never know much about companies
that put an advertisment in the paper or phone book.

My kitties certainly are less traumatized by having a sitter stop
by the house than when I have to take them to the vet/kennel in
their travel-boxes. They hate riding in the car unless I turn
them loose; then it's cat fur all over!

It'll be more than cat fur all over if you ever have an accident
with them out of the carriers. For that and a number of other good
reasons its a VERY bad idea to let you cat run around the car when
you're driving somewhere. I know ours used to get under the driver's
    feet!

I met two women (Marybeth Zaharakis and Sandy Robillard) who manage a
Pet Sitting business called "No Place Like Home Pet Care", and
specialize in professional in-home pet care. They work out of the
    Leominster and Fitchburg area.

Has anyone heard of them? They have been in business for about three
years. They come to your house while you're away, and take care of
your animals. They charge $8 a visit, and an additional $1 per animal.
They will pick up your mail, water your plants, take your messages, and
most importantly, pamper and feed your animals, for what I think, a
    very reasonable charge.

I'd be interested if anyone has used this service, or know of anyone
    that has used them.
