385.0. "does your cat like mirrors?" by CADSYS::RICHARDSON () Wed Nov 12 1986 15:57

Do your cats enjoy mirrors? Neither of mine react at all to seeing
their own or each other's reflections in the mirror, but a friend
says that his tomcat (Nugget, a sweet-tempered dusty-orange little
altered tom who is a great hunter) gets very excited if he catches
a glimpse of himself in a mirror. Do you suppose this is because
Nugget is a (former) male, while my cats are (former) females, or
    is it an individual thing?

Two of my past cats liked mirrors, the rest could care less.
Mittens would spend hours jumping at his likeness in the full
length mirror that hung on the bathroom door. I had to keep the
door closed, or else I'de hear him jumping all evening. I also
had a shaving mirror with one side normal and the other side
a magnifying mirror. It was fun to place the mirror on the floor
and let mittens stare into the normal side, then flip the mirror
and he'd jump back growling and hissing at the big cat staring back.
He'd run up, bat the image with his paw a few times, then hightail
    it away.
Rascal had a a similar hangup with mirrors, only he'd sit
there forever staring at himself, mewing away, once in a while
patting the mirror with his paw.

I have seen it go both ways - with the same cat! When my Shawsheen
was a little boy kitty, he would stand on his hind legs and try
to scratch his way to the kitty in the mirror. He was always glad
to get the help of the kitty in the mirror on that job, but even
with both of them working at it, they never got through. I guess
he got tired of the game (or perhaps the two of them are not speaking
to each other), because he now pays no attention to the mirror at
    all.

My mother used to have a full length mirror at the end of the hall
in her house. Her cat would start to run full speed down the hall
and bang right into the mirror. I guess she figured that she wanted
to continue to run down the hall she saw in the mirror. The thing
that I could never understand - why did she bang straight into the
mirror? I never even saw her jump out of the way to miss hitting
the kitty in the mirror that was running strait at her!

My childhood cat would look in the mirror on the closet door and
then go around the door to see who was there. My current two have
only a passing interest in mirrors.

I have a three sided makeup mirror that I use to get ready for work.
My new little kitten (female) will just sit in my lap and look at
herself in the mirror. She likes to check the side views too.

My cats aren't interested in mirrors but one loves the window in
the washing-machine - he tries to get the clothes as they go round.

The other one likes the Tv screen - when you switch it off he tries
    to get his reflection.
