321.0. "needs home/can only stay at hospital a few days longer" by FSTVAX::COLLINS () Tue Sep 02 1986 15:26

                    <Injured Cat Needs Home>

On Saturday, August 30 a cat was hit by a car on Rte 2A in Ayer
across from the Steer & Stein. I am writting this note because I am
disturbed that the driver never stopped to help the cat. I arrived on the
scene as well as the woman driver in front of me only moments after the
accident. The woman driving in front of me blocked traffic with her car
thus preventing the cat from being hit again by oncoming traffic. I
pulled off the road and went to aide the cat. She had apparently been hit
in the rear quarters and was in shock. I slid my shirt under the cat while
trying to keep her calm as I waited for a neighbor to get something I
could put under her back and lift her into my Jeep. The other driver
went to a phone and called a few of the local vet's offices but they
all refused to look at the cat since neither of us were the owner of the cat.
Thus I had to drive approx. 1/2 hour to the Animal Emergency Care center
in Acton on 2A. Needless to say it was the longest ride of my life.
Now for the real reason I am writting this note. I have been an animal
lover/owner all my life and know that all of you are as well since you
read this notesfile. I am looking for the owner of this cat or someone
who will adopt her. I think it's a her but not a hundred % sure.
I have been calling about her every day to see how she's/he's doing
and I'm pleased to say things are looking good. I don't know what
the Center's policy is concerning how long the will keep the cat if
they can't find the owner or someone who will adopt. I have even thought
of paying the medical bills and then take her to one of the shelters
mentioned in this notesfile that won't put the cat to sleep but instead
find her a good home. If anyone would like to adopt her or know of
someone who will please call the shelter or contact me. The cat is listed
under my name. Here are the details known about the cat.

    Joany,
I am not currently in a position which would allow me to take
the cat in as one of my own, however, I would be willing to help pay
the vet bills and transport the cat to one of the 'no destroy'
shelters. If you decide to go that route, just let me know. No matter
what you decide, let us all know how the kitty makes out!

321.2update on injured cat/ thanks to all for their helpFSTVAX::COLLINSWed Sep 03 1986 13:5323
Thanks for the offer to help pay the vet bills. I'm taking her out
of the emerg, care center this afternoon and bring her to a vet
where she can get x-rays. It appears she has a fractured pelvis
and will be ok after 5-6 weeks of rest. On a positive note I think
I have found her a home and if things go well she will be in her
new home in a matter of days. If the new home doesn't work out I
will bringing her to a "no destroy shelter" since I have 3 dogs
at home and just don't feel comforatable about bringing another
animal into my roomie's house. Thanks for your thoughts and offer
to help. It's nice to know there are people out there that care.

    Joany

ps:there is another cat at the emerg. care center
with a broken pelvis, seems it's a common thing
that occurs as a result of being hit by a car.
not sure the sex of the cat but she/he needs a home
also since no on has come to claim him/her.

Since I'm in South Carolina, I'm afraid I can't do much to help
you, but I did want to say that I, for one, appreciate the fact
that you just didn't stop and leave the cat there. I was beginning
to think I was the only one that stopped for injured animals...

321.4Even Non-Cat person stopsTIGEMS::SCHELBERGWed Sep 03 1986 16:5322
Yes, Joany I too appreciate you stopping!

But believe it or not people do stop to help injured animals. Last
June my husband and I stopped when a cat got hit by a car who also
didn't stop. My husband spun the car around when he saw the injured
cat in the road (he is not a cat fancier, it's me who love'ems)
but he got the cat out of the road and another lady stopped to....
we got him in our car and took him to the BEDFORD Animal hospital
the poor baby looked like it was in bad shape and in shock as well.
The hospital put the cat to sleep because the injuries were so bad
that they didn't think the cat could make it.....my husband was
very upset.....more at the car that hit her/she had kittens but
no body new where because we checked with the neighborhood but they
said that she was a stray - see even at first I thought it was a
he....but we don't know what happen to the kittens or how old they
    were.

But YEAH for stopping and finding the kitty a good home! Too many
    people just hit and run....

321.5SAD UPDATEFSTVAX::COLLINSThu Sep 04 1986 18:5631
It is with much sadness that I have to report her death. I had her
put to sleep last evening, since her injuries were more extensive
than originally thought. Her spine had been damaged thus causing her
not to have anal control. Without this control she was unable to
eliminate bile from her system, or urine. Thus the most humane choice
was to put her to sleep. I stayed with her while the vet administered
the shot and talked/pet her until her passing. I know alot of people
think I'm crazy for wanting to be there with an animal while the shot
is given and wanting to stay with the animal until the last breath is
taken. But I have a philosophy that any animal that is being put to sleep
should pass on from this world with someone there that cares. The animal
is faced with the vet and an assistant holding the animal down when
the shot is administered causing stress and fear. If someone is
there to talk to and pet the animal during the few seconds it takes
for the drug to cause death the passing is more gentle for the last
thing they feel is the caring an love of the person talking/petting
them. Maybe this concept is just my way of dealing with an animals
death, and my way of feeling better about the entire sad event.

Anyway now that I'm teary eyed all over again, I'll stop blabbering.
I will be putting in a note every week about the stray animals at
the emerg. care center that need homes. I had asked what I could
do to help the center as far as money, food, blankets etc. and was
told that what was needed most was homes for the strays. I will
be checking with the center every Tuesday, and putting in a note
that day about the stray cats.A list of stray dogs will be put
    into the Canine notesfile.

No, you're not the only one who feels she should be with an animal
while it is put to sleep. I feel this way also, and my beliefs saved
    one of my cats.

When I was a college student I had a cat who had a urinary blockage.
I didn't know what this was so by the time I got the cat to the
vet he was in lots of pain. The vet told me it would cost about
$125 and I got my parents ok. (I didn't have the money, being a
poor college student.) So the vet took the cat and I went to pay.
I got to the billing lady and she said it would be $350. VERY tearfully
I told her I couldn't afford that, we'd have to put the cat to sleep
but I insisted on being there. So the vet brought the cat out. The
vet was very angry that I had changed my mind. I explained why and
she looked at the bill. A mistake had been made and the original
    price was correct.

By this time I was an emotional wreck, but my cat was saved and
lived for another 6 years. I have always been grateful that I believed
in being with my animals when they are put to sleep.

< Listing of Cat(s) that need to be adopted>

The following is a list of cat(s) that are at the Animal Emergency
Care Center in Acton. Mass who have been injured (are on the mend)
and need to be adopted by a caring person/persons. This list will
be updated every Tuesday as to new arrivals to the center. Also the
list will be update when an adoption has taken place.

    adoption needed

grey tiger alot of white with some orange
female approx. 2 years of age
    small in size

injury- fractured pelvis (x-rays have been taken)
can jump easily but walks with a slight wobble

loveable likes to snuggle, but should be adopted into a home where
it will be an indoor cat, can be adopted into a home where there
are other cats or dogs as long as it doesn't get chased around since

doesn't mind the other dogs that get to run around the center.
