275.0. "Let's hear it for Mikey!" by TOPDOC::SLOANE (Notable notes from -bs- ) Tue Jul 08 1986 14:14

I work with Mike (Mikey) Philbrook, and he is a dedicated,
conscientous animal lover. His comments on adoption reflected the
    views of the shelter.

I'm sorry to see him come under such personal attack. I'm as guilty
as anyone, because the note I wrote about adoption certainly could not
    be considered supportive.

He has felt so down about what he feels is personal criticism that he
has deleted all his comments, and then deleted the entire file.

Do we want people to feel that way? I think we should send him personal
notes of encouragement, and ask him to please rejoin FELINE. It's
up to each individual, of course, but if you want to, you can send
him any mail message you want to APTECH::PHILBROOK.

You'll forgive me, but it sounds to me like he should get the Golden
Pampers award.

275.2Bleeding heart liberals...DSSDEV::COLLINSTue Jul 08 1986 15:1017
I wish we could get back to talking about cats and stop whining about
how poor Mikey was the target of personal attacks. Now that his notes are gone
it's hard to give an example, but the dude was "dishing it out". If he's going
through some emotional trauma because he stuck his foot in his mouth one to
many times then "them the breaks".

Anyone who sets themselves up as the "oracle of wisdom" on cat care
has to expect to get ragged on by all the peoples whose emotions HE stepped
on.

	Grow up Mikey.

	Back to catting...

Come on Mikey, you claimed that letting a cat outdoors unsupervised
was as good as "signing their death certificate". The indoor/outdoor debate
got very heated and you took the extreme view that letting animals out
unsupervised showed a lack of care on the part of the pet owner, you weren't
able to recognize an opinion that was different than your own (because of
course you've seen it all the Humane society and have the HARD facts to back
it up). When you set yourself up in such a high and mighty position as that
you've got to expect to ruffle some feathers. And since your notes are DELETED
it's difficult for me to have any HARD facts. I view the debates in the notes
as attacks against opinions, not individuals. When you direct a note at
someone and tell them to "shut up" that's when it starts taking on a personal
attitude.

Mr. Philbrook,

First, let me point out that there are two Tabers and two
Collins' who frequent this file (both pairs are married.) It would be
best to go by signature and not given name.

I stayed out of your "Nashua Humane Society" fight, but did
award you the Golden Pampers for deleting all your messages in this
file. Deleting all those responses seemed a rude and immature thing, to
me, and as \harry points out, now there is only your word that they were
not inflammatory. My personal way of evaluating these things is that if
ONE person got upset, probably they weren't inflammatory. If TWO people
got upset the might not have been. But if three or more people tend to
jump on you, then maybe it's YOU.
					Lighten up,

    <<<FLAME ON!!!!HIGHEST INTENSITY>>>>

Now I know what the term "CATTY" means when applied to so-called
"humans!" I really thought a long time before I began to participate
in this conference...and this will most certainly be the last time
I do!! I realize now that this is another one of the conferences
that is obviously controlled by a few opinionated jackasses who
will force their opinions down others throats at any cost..and if
anyone has the "NERVE" to put in an opinion that disagrees with
    theirs...then the attack begins..
I really feel sorry for the people who have a genuine interest
in friendly and helpful discussion of the subject/topic of the
conference...and I'm a little bit surprised to see the moderator
sit back and do nothing about this...
To attack a dedicated person like Mike Philbrook is not even
rational!!! This person does more for animal welfare in one day
than the entire group of opinionated jerks who have perpetrated
this attack does in fifty centurys!! It's a reflection of the JUVENILE
    nature of these individuals!!
This is exactly the type of ignorant behavior in the personal
notes that will, if it does not stop, cause upper level management
to TERMINATE ALL PERSONAL NOTES---and probably justifiably so!!!
Don't *Bother* to begin an attack on me----I won't be participating
in this conference again....and anyone with any self-respect wouldn't
    either..
       SHAME ON YOU!!!

                                       <<<FLAME OFF>>>

May I be so bold to ask - what are we talking about that has caused
such a conflict???? I just started reading this note and all I
got is Mikey is this and that......well just what is the subject???

I want to know why everyone dislikes Mikey???? It sounds like he
was for keeping cats indoors and everyone else likes them outdoors?

Am I close????? Or is this just a sore spot now?

Actually I'm not a friend of Mikey's but I met him once and he
really is a nice guy....so it must be his opinion that everyone
    dislikes right?

Any further notes that express negative opinions of any
Noters (but not of their opinions) will be deleted. In
other words, feel free to say "I disagree with your statement
that a cat is so-and-so", but don't bother saying "You
        are a so-and-so because you believe that a cat..." - it'll
        disappear.

Having said that, I'll also say that I believe the flames
have died down, and this conference will return to its
normal self. I doubt I'll have to delete anything.

I'm sorry, but I have a real job and today was a particularly
busy day. I can't always read each note of each of the
dozen-odd conferences I moderate every five minutes.
