272.0. "Garfield isn't kidding..." by GALACH::CONLON (CSC - Colorado Springs) Sat Jul 05 1986 17:27

My son and I have two cats (Woof, 9 year old male and Tweetie,
6 year old female) -- indoor kitties. We have had a habit for
years of occasionally sharing little bits of our dinner with
them (after their normal meals.) Just little treats...like tiny
bits of meat (steak, chicken or turkey, NO BONES, of course) --
and they've always liked dairy products (milk, ice cream, yogurt
and cheese.) We don't get crazy and set places for them at the
table -- we just "share" with them sometimes (nothing excessive.)

Over the years, I've found that Woofie will eat almost ANYTHING
if given the chance! His idol must be Garfield (cuz he is definite-
ly a Lasagna freak!) He also likes spaghetti, french fries, potato
chips and pizza! (He ADORES pepperoni, but it makes him thirsty)
-- he also likes pizza crust (tries to steal it off our plates
      when we turn our backs...)

Of course, we're careful not to let him have much of this --
he is a F.U.S. kitty who SURVIVED it and has not had a reoccurance
for 4 years now (thank God!) But we just thought it was strange
for a kitty to like food like this!

By the way, out of curiosity, we offered Tweetie a french fry
once. She smelled it and then looked at us like we had our clothes
on backwards (and seemed to walk away shaking her head, "Who ARE
these people??") (Of course, Woofie ran over and gobbled the
french fry in a split second!)

Does anybody else have kitties with strange tastebuds?

                                                         Suzanne...

       re: .1

Thanks for pointing that note out to me!! I'm new to
Notes and have been "catching up" on 10 or 15 conferences
(that's a lot of NOTES!!) But I missed that one on
       kitty appetites!

I didn't realize that so many kitties like French fries
(especially McDonald french fries!!) I wonder why they
haven't picked up on that and put it in their ads (something
on the order of "your kitty deserves a break today" maybe --
or "discriminating kitties eat at McDonald's"...??) This
could be a major factor in the Junk Food Wars (between Burger
       King, McDonald's and Wendy's.) I don't know -- I think I'D
       be influenced!! :-)

                                                     Thanks again!!
                                                        Suzanne...

One reason for cats liking McDonald's fries is because they are (I believe)
fried in BEEF TALLOW.
