265.0. "toxic house plants?" by SSVAX::DALEY () Tue Jun 17 1986 13:07

Does anyone have a list of house plants which are toxic to cats?
I'd appreciate any help in this area. Thanks. Pat

Mike - I received an Australian Patience - which is a houseplant
looking like a regular Patience. I am wondering about it. Only one
of my three cats would consider consuming it but then he'd consume
ANYTHING with a flower on it.

Do you happen to know the scientific name of your plant?
Most toxic plant lists go by that.

I don't remember seeing Patience listed.

I'll get out the cat books tonight and put in the list.
(Some off the top of my head, (in addition to those listed in .1)
Azalea, most kinds of Ivy, Dumbcane, misteltoe.)

A recent (3 or 4 months ago) issue of either CATS or CAT FANCY had
an article, including a nearly page long list. I'll try to find
the issue and post the list.

I pulled out my houseplants book and the name for the Patience
plant is impatiens sultanii. I have not seen it listed in any list
of toxic plants I've seen either by common name or scientific namme.

I'll enter a complete list as a separate note.

I want to thank everyone for their inputs. I started out thinking
about which plants to avoid bringing into my house since "Murphy"
wants to try out everything and then to see if I needed to get rid of any,
--- but got to thinking that these lists would be good to pass
on to the people who adopt from our Humane Society. Mike - could
you send me the list you picked up at your shelter? I am located at
MLO1-5/T33. I'll also be checking on "Notes" for any additional
    suggestions.

Thanks again everybody, I appreciate it.
