150.0. "** CAT CONTEST!! **" by GOLLY::JERRI () Thu Sep 19 1985 15:29

I'm sure a lot of you share my interest in reading about bizarre things cats
do. They are very bizarre creatures! However, reading through lengthy
descriptions can take a lot of time to get to the "punch line". So hows-abouts
a "contest" where each entry is no longer than 5 lines max., describing the
StRaNgEsT/funniest/SMARTEST thing your cat has done? There should only be one
entry per cat, so make sure you think about this one before presenting "THE"
competitional entry in your cat's honor.

We can make the contest end on October 31st, and then we'll take a grand vote
on what your favorite entry was. We can do this by having voters send their
votes to me via MAIL and I'll post the winner. I'll post a note later on about
the voting procedure.

The winning cat will be honored by having a full story (not to exceed 3
screens...ha ha) about his or her wonderful talents, for all the feline
notesfile readers and their cats to marvel at.

Please post your entries for the contest as "responses" to this note.

Happy posting!

One of our cats, named [Moon]Shadow, fetches small toys or rolled up pieces
of paper. We made it a real game for awhile, where we would put a ball of
paper in very hard to reach places, and Shadow always got it and returned it.
Sometimes we find a wad of paper in bed with us in the morning, and we know
that Shadow was there.

One of my deceased cats, Nianinne, wanted to get me out of bed on a chilly
morning, and i waznted to stay under the nice, warm electric blanket.

So she stepped on the (rocker) switch and shut it off!

(my current crop has an even smarter cat, but that's the smartest single
thing any of my cats ever did)

How about one that ANSWERS THE PHONE!!! (I've seen her [Cinamon, a Seal Point
Siamese] pick up the reciever of a ringing phone by using the cord coming out
of it.) (I think she even meowed at somebody once!!)

ONE YEAR WHEN ON VACATION OUR INDOOR CAT CLIMBED OUT THE HOTEL
WINDOW , WE WERE ON THE SECOND FLOOR AND DIDN'T REALIZE TILL WE
WOKE IN THE MORNING. WE CALLED THE FRONT DESK AND NOONE HAD SEEN HER.
AFTER WE HUNTED EVERYWHERE IMAGINABLE WE PACKED UP OUR THINGS AND HEADED
FOR THE VAN. WHEN WE GOT THERE WHO DO YOU SUPPOSE WAS SITTING UNDER THE
VAN CRYING, AS IF TO SAY WHERE HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN.

Fluffy, my previous cat, was very much in love with my poodle. When
Fluffy would eat her dry food, which was kept on top of the refrigerator
out of reach of the dogs, the poodle would sit on the floor below.
Fluffy would always take a pawfull of food out of the bowl and drop
it to the floor for her best friend. With the size of her paws,
the poodle was well fed.

My deceased cat, Doodies, used to drink his water out of my hands at the
sink! Every morning and evening at the bathroom sink, (and sometimes at
the kitchen sink), I run the water, make a cup with my hands, fill it up
and Doodies would sit at the sink and lap the water up. I would always
keep the 'cup' full by putting part of my hands under the running water.

It was a cute sight, believe me!

B.R. Kitty, my late calico munchkin, loved music--and attempted to make it
herself, any number of ways! She would bat at the strings of guitars (hated
low E) until she set up a *suitable* sound, then lay her cheek on the wood
of the guitar and just bliss out. She loved to walk on the Yamaha keyboard
when it was turned on (again, the high end was her idea of *art*). Windchimes,
even those way out of reach, intrigued her endlessly, and when she could
get at them to ring them--even at midnight!--she did.

But my favorite musical memory of B.R. is her jumping up to *sing* with
me when I did my best Judy Garland imitation on "Somewhere Over the
Rainbow"--she did great *harmony* on "why oh why can't I?"

While working around the house one afternoon, I had my favorite soaps on T.V.
I kept thinking to myself "Hmmm, there sure are a lot of new characters, I
don't recognize any of these people". Then I found out what was happening.
My long-haired calico, Pumpkin, was sitting on the remote control. Every time
she shifted her weight, she'd press the channel button. Apparently, I'd gone
from watching the soaps on channel 2, to channel 4, to channel 5 without
knowing it. It wasn't until Pumpkin switched the channel to a station that
didn't have a soap on, that I figured out what was happening!

Prunes, the cat who jumped out the window at a turnpike tollbooth never
to be seen again, used to pace around the edge of the free-standing bathtub
we owned. She would walk around the edge and cut across my chest as I read
a good book Until she fell in (which she did regularly). She would just
continue shaking all over me to dry off, purring all the time.

    That reminds me...

Before I was married, I lived alone in a 2 story apartment. My bedroom
was upstairs. I woke up one night I woke up at around 3:30 to hear voices
downstairs. I wasn't sure if they were coming from out front or from inside
the apartment. I got up to go look out the front window. I saw light coming
from downstairs, but a wierd kind of light. I finally got up enough courage
to go downstairs and see what was what. The TV was on! I hadn't left it
on, in fact, I hadn't had it on the evening at all! It wasn't until a day
or two later that understood what happened. I had a cable converter box
with buttons on the top of it and one of the cats had stepped on the on/off
button on his way to the way window. REALLY had me going for a while!

Cats don't like to get wet, huh? Matzah likes to take a bath with me.
He eases himself into the tub via my legs. The water is usually right
up to his little chin, but he must always keep his tail 'high and dry'.
He just walks around looking down at the movement of the water and his
paws moving under water.
