98.0. "Lost kitten blues" by CADLAC::GOUN () Mon May 20 1985 01:53

On Friday my new housekeeper decided to open a window in my bedroom, not
knowing it was the one window in the house without a screen. Loiosh and Ada
both got out. Ada came back the next morning; Loiosh is still MIA. Loiosh
has never been out in the real world alone before. Needless to say I am
deep in despair.

Loiosh is an 8 1/2 month old male. I jokingly think that he somehow sensed
that next month he is to become an ex-male, and decided to have his first
and only fling with an attractive, available neighborhood female. Is a cat
his age old enough to "run around"?

I've walked around the neighborhood several times calling his name. I'm
sure my neighbors think there's a ghost on the property who walks around
slowly at all hours of the day and night softly calling "Loi-i-i-osh".

I've left a bowl of food and a catnip toy on the window sill of the window
he escaped from. The window is open (boy was last night cold!). Ada is
temporarily confined to another room. Tonight when I came home some food
was eaten and the toy was gone, but whether it was Loiosh or another cat, or
even a squirrel, I have no idea.

I called the shelter where I got him to tell them he's missing. He's
wearing a tag with their phone number and his adoption number. I've called
the local animal hospital and the town dog officer. Tomorrow I'll put
"REWARD -- LOST CAT" signs in the lobbies of my complex, and in the
neighborhood stores. I'll also take out an ad in the local newspaper.
There's an answering machine on my phone.

Is there anything else I should do? I didn't realize how attached I'd
become to this little guy until he was gone!

					Hopefully,

Roger,

Has the little guy come back? When my Maine Coon Cat was about 6
months old, he got out for the first time. He was gone for several
hours, but returned home later. After that, he would occasionally wander
off for a day or two at a time. Both my cats seem to spend a day or two
away once in awhile. I think they are living at the neighbors' houses.
They always come back.

Alas, Denise, Loiosh has not returned. It's been almost two weeks now, and
I'm losing heart. I have a friend whose roommate's cat was away for two weeks
once; perhaps all is not lost.

I've continued to leave the window open for Loiosh, but all this has gotten me
so far is a cold.

See my new response in note #2 for the one bright spot in this sad story.

This evening I got a phone call from a woman in one of the neighboring
buildings. She had seen my "Lost Cat" sign, and called to say that a gray
tiger answering Loiosh's description was in one of the nearby parking lots.

I went outside, and guess who I found by the trash dumpster near my building!
Loiosh saw me, screamed, and ambled over. I sat down on the cement and he
jumped into my lap. I'm sure I looked pretty ridiculous playing the reunion
scene from "Without a Trace" with a cat, but I felt just WONDERFUL!

Loiosh is thin, but apparently healthy. Amazingly, he still has his collar,
which hangs very loosely on his now-scrawny neck. He spent his first hour at
home commuting between the food dish and my lap. Right now he's got his paws
wrapped around my neck in a much-needed hug.

My thanks to all of you who have contributed advice, assistance, and
consolation during these harrowing two weeks.

I'm moved to tears that your kitty was found. Alas, my newly acquired
to the woods kitty (Tattoo) has been missing for 5 days now. I have
searched all the neighboring roads, woods and fields calling for him.
I am hopeful that he will return, saw a weasel Sunday and am fearing
the worst. He was/is? such a friendly cat.

I really hope that Tattoo does find his way home. I know the feeling of
wait, wait, wait...

I too know the feeling. We had a big yellow longhair that used to wander a
lot. There would be frequent times when we didn't see him for a couple of days
at a time. There were even a few times where he was gone over a week! (A
couple of times we were sure that he had been shut up in a garage when
somebody went on vacation. [He would come back all dirty and hungry as a
horse!])

	Hope your's returns soon

Thank you all very much for writing. I am hoping that he is only temporarily
in a garage somewhere. I'm glad I have Cat Notes, it helps. I'll keep you
posted. deb
