61.0. "Three's a crowd!!" by SUPER::GERMANN () Thu Jan 24 1985 18:09

I realize that I have given my cats more than their share of
attention the last few years since I was single and uninvolved.
However, I now have a wonderful gentleman-friend and the revenge
is getting to be something else!!

Two of the cats generally ignore the situation, and, in fact, will
turn their backs on us. The third, however, is driving us crazy.
Juliette will climb up on Ray if we are on the couch trying to
be close. If she catches us hugging, she will walk across the
back of the couch until she is between our heads and then will
horn her way in. She also delights in surprise pounces on whichever
lap is available at the most inopportune times.

I never thought cats cared. I have had dogs that would nip
anyone who was hugging, but cats?

Anyone else have similar experiences?

Yes. My roommate had a kitten that decided to attack my dates hands on the
least amount of movement. I couldn't figure which of us she was mad at - him
for being there or me for bringing him.

Later I moved to Atlanta and had a cat of my own. When I started dating
someone, if he sat in a spot that was predominantly used by Chaucer, Chaucer
would sit in his lap and stare at him like he should move. Didn't work in
this case as the guy felt that all animals (cats, dogs, whatever) belonged
outside 24 hours a day except for VERY rare occasions. It usually ended with
a "Beth, get rid of your cat before he learns to fly." (The guy doesn't
dislike cats but they are "just animals", and don't require being treated like
humans. He will play with cats and hold them, but leave them outside.)
Later, I would find lovely presents from Chaucer in my large flower pots.

I've got 5 cats and they've always reacted to new people well. (That
includes two guys I've dated since they came to live with me.) However,
maybe the fact that both guys were cat lovers had an effect. In general,
my kitties react to people as new toys. ("Oh boy! New laps! More hand to
pet me! Keys and ties and ribbons to play with!")
Depending on the circumstances, (Loud, large groups of people, scary noises)
A couple of my cats will be bashful for a few minutes. But the only time
I've seen my cats react in an actively hostile manner was yesterday. Merry
the laziest, dopiest, easygoing cat probably in the whole world was sitting
on the back of the couch purring into my husband's ear. All of the sudden
he sat up and stared out the window and started *growling*. (I didn't know he
knew *how* to growl!) There was a policeman walking in my yard along the border
between our yard and the neighbor's. I think we may have found the reason that
we've never been broken into even though our neighbors on both have been
broken into more than once since we moved in. (For thos of you not familiar
with my cats, Merry is a *large* cat. He weighs 17 lbs. of which maybe 2 or 3
pounds is overweight. The rest is just big cat. I've had people ask what
kind of cat he is and not believe me when I said he was just a domestic cat.
I guess I'll just have to start telling people that he is half ocelot.) (His
nickname was the ocelot because he has small rounded ears, large round eyes,
and a spotted coat like an ocelot.)

My cat is not a friendly cat by nature and will usually only come
to me. But it's another story when my boyfriend comes round. She
thinks he's come to see her!

When we sit down to watch TV, who gets the cuddles? The cat! When
my boyfriend makes himself a sandwich, who shares it with him?
The cat! When it's time to retire, who gets all the attention!
The cat! I'm beginning to think she's trying to tell me something!

Sometimes 3 can be a crowd but I don't mind sharing him. After
all! She often gives me her mouse to play with while I wait my
    turn!
