1627.0. "ODBC for an Access database file on Alpha NT server?" by GIDDAY::av_pc1.shl.dec.com::sullivan () Tue Feb 04 1997 08:14

Is it possible to set up an ODBC data source for
an MS Access 95 database on Alpha NT? Note that
I do not want to do the MS Access development
on the Alpha NT server - I just need to be able
to use ODBC to talk to it.

If the above isn't possible, I will have to use SQL
Server, but this isn't what I want to do.

Thanks,
Greg.

I don't think the MS Office suite works on Alpha. Just Intel. Unless you use
the FX translation s/w on an Alpha.

The answer to .0 is YES.

You don't need ODBC because Access has a built-in driver for other
Access databases.

Look up Linked Tables in the Help file.

As long as the target server supports Windows file sharing, it can
be used as a shared database server. I currently have an Access
database that runs on Win 95/Access 95 clients and accesses a
tables-only Access database located on an Alpha server running
OpenVMS.

(all of the above applies to Access 95, I don't know of other
versions' functionality)

RE -.1

The problem is I *need* to be able to create an
ODBC data source for the Access database - I am
NOT accessing the database soley from an Access client -
a web server (IIS) will also need to connect to the
database.

I had a pretty good idea that MS Access wouldn't run
native on Alpha, but I thought that MAYBE an ODBC
driver would be available.

Since Access provides its own single tier ODBC driver, it needs to run
on Alpha. And MS Office products only run on Intel chips. Even Visual
Basic doesn't run on Alpha (yet or ever) - I think a significant reason
for people to buy Pentium instead of Alpha.

	Never say ever...

You'll be glad to know that you'll be pleasantly surprised
in the not too distant future..

I know, but I believe it when I see it, hence the "yet/ever"...

    Woo hoo!!! :)

I just downloaded Active Server Pages for Alpha - low and behold -
it installs an MS Access ODBC driver!!!
