658.0. "Exit poll." by GAAS::BRAUCHER (Welcome to Paradise) Tue Feb 20 1996 11:53

OK, let's take an exit poll in this topic. Which party ballot
did you take in the primaries, and who did you x. Today it's NH,
3/5 it'll be Mass. By the way Dixville Notch already counted and
     reported its 51 ballots (39 R, 12 D) : Dole 14, Alexander 13,
     Buchanan 5, Forbes 4, 3 others; Clinton 12.

I understand it to largely be that no one has a _right_ to know how
you voted, not that it's your duty to keep it a secret if you haven't
any qualms about exposing it.

Informal exit polls aren't exactly illegal.

The secret ballot gives those who want to keep their vote their own business
the opportunity to do so. Do you wish that it also be a "protection from
information"?
658.15SMURF::BINDERManus Celer DeiTue Feb 20 1996 16:032
The maximum number of people who can keep a secret is one. The term
"secret ballot" becomes an oxymoron if you tell someone how you voted.

There were exit pollers from CNN and the LA Times at my polling place

what the criteria is for choosing people.

I did get a call from a polling outfit last night, though.

if you want to say how you went tomorrow, when we know the
outcome, that's still interesting. I'll say how I went 3/6
     after our primary.

note to Binder : if you want to subvert exit polls, best effect
is achieved by lying with a straight face, not refusing to answer.
Refusing is ineffective, but only 5% lies destroys the poll.

btw, this little sample is one of several little indicators that
tell me Alexander is going to have a good day today. I can feel it.

Yup, voted in Merrimack on my way to work. They had actually
removed me completely from the voting list about 6 months ago instead
of updating my entry as I had asked, probably because there are
two Mary Scanlons in Merrimack and they got confused. So I
had to re-register, which made the party affiliation thing
real easy :-). Now I just have to go and change it back to
    Democrat :-)

I find it really funny how politicians are so up on "what the
people are sick of". I've heard that poo poo head Alexander
going on about "people are sick of negative ads" for weeks...
well, no I'm not. Politics are boring crap anyway, and they're
all bloody liars... good mud-slinging is about the only
entertainment left in politics. So buzz off Lamar, either
insult someone or shut the hell up.

I agree that Lamar came out of the same sort of schmoozing
southern sleezebag mold that Bill Clinton is made of. Which
is why I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot exit poll.

So, everyone reading the 'box, and everyone with whom they might communicate,
etc., has access to the fact that I cast my NH primary ballot for Alexander,
and thus it's no longer a (_*secret*_). I don't have a problem with that. If
you don't care to mention for whom you did or will cast your ballot, that is
your prerogative, and no one's attempting to convince you to do otherwise. I
don't happen to be as concerned about the privacy of my opinion. Different
strokes.

Diane, "prerogative" can only be used when describing an entrance

Actually, I have heard that among certain left-wing groups, there
is a Buchanan movement. The idea being, to reelect Clinton. Of
course, the same tactic might be available to right-wing groups
in 2000. Personally, I consider this tactic legit. That is, the
primary system as it is set up now, legitimizes the strategy of
trying to help the opposite party's least electable candidate.

There are ways to eliminate this, but they require a major change
     to how we pick presidents.
