231.0. "Celebrity Criminals" by GRINCH::KALIN (IfUcantStandWinter,UdontDeserveSummer) Fri Jan 06 1995 12:15

Am I the only one who is tired of people who commit (sometimes
violent) crimes for the sake of fame & fortune or publicity?

First Hinckley, then Chapman, now Salvi, who: "wants to talk
with Barbara Walters", and says "...if acquitted [!!!], I want
to become a Catholic Priest [!!!!!]".

	 Geez.

I thought he wanted to talk to Dan Rather...

Yup, that's what Salvi said...if convicted he
wants to be executed, if acquitted, he wants to
become a Catholic priest. That's probably what
he wanted to talk to Cardinal Law about.

Salvi's lawyer's name is J.W. Carney.

His clients include the lovely Kenneth Seguin, who,
in 1991, drugged his two children, slashed their throats,
and threw them in a pond. Then Kenny went home and axed
his wife to death while she lay sleeping in bed.

The plea was insanity and Kenny was convicted of 2nd degree
murder.

231.9LANDO::OLIVER_BFri Jan 06 1995 16:3112
Seguin never denied killing his family; he was
charged with first degree murder. But he was
convicted of second degree murder after Carney
argued that he was insane at the time.

I don't know when, if ever, they'll let him out.
But he is incarcerated somewhere.

I do remember that the prosecutor tried to convince
the jury that Kenny had thought all his actions through,
and quite sanely. He purchased the drugs to use on his
children, etc. But, the jury thought otherwise, I guess.

Salvi... what an idjit. They don't have the death penalty in Mass.
How would they execute him? Send him to Jeffrey Dahmer's prison?

And how come we're not being "alleged" to death? :-)

I thought Carney was hired in Boston by Salvi's family or something..the
public defender was another guy from Virginia..

Whitey Bulger, wotta character. The Sunday Globe had

Apparently someone did at one time or another.

Speaking of which, for those of us who haven't any pressing
need to follow local Mass issues -
Exactly what/who is a "Whitey Bulger"?

231.26MPGS::MARKEYI most definitely think I mightTue Jan 10 1995 00:2622
John "Whitey" Bulger is the 65 year old brother of Mass senate
president William Bulger. He is also considered to be the head
of the largest gangland operation in Boston, eclipsing the
size of the local mafia contingent. His stock in trade is
mostly gambling. Whitey has a very loyal network of contacts,
including in local, state and federal police agencies. Thus,
he routinely manages to avoid prosecution. Several attempts
to bring federal racketeering charges against Bulger have
failed. He served time for bank robbery some 30 years
    ago.

Back a few years ago, Whitey managed to hit the Mass Millions
jackpot, netting him an $80,000 a year bonus to go along
with the other earnings. Rumor has it that Whitey considers
    this "chump change".

One of his gambling minions recently entered the fed witness
protection program and Whitey has been indicted once again.
Attempts to deliver the indictment have been unsuccessful,
as Whitey has once again managed to elude capture.

Full of principles, too... I read that someone was listing

"I'm NOT a drug dealer!!!!"

I suppose it's possible that Whitey and Billy Bulger are the same
    person... but I don't think so: :-)

Billy: *Rules* the Senate with an iron fist. People in his
own party (D) tried a palace coup to oust Bulger from
the leadership. They failed. As one of Bulger's Senate
supporters said "If you're going to try and kill the
King, don't miss!" Billy is the one who quotes
           Shakespeare...

Whitey:The criminal. Quotes John Gotti, mostly... :-)

Looks like Carney's going to go for the insanity
plea, but only if Salvi says it's okay.

Carney is quoted as saying that "the trial will not
be what happened, but why. He (Salvi) has developed
some extraordinary beliefs based on his deeply felt
religious feelings."

Where is the "Understatement of the Century" topic?

231.36LANDO::OLIVER_BTue Jan 10 1995 15:236
In his 6-page letter to the world, Salvi wrote that the
Catholics should have their own currency so that Catholics
in hard times would never be broke.

convincing show...

I hate to say this, but 5 people have told me that I look a lot like
this guy. Throw in that Salvi is a dyslexic way of spelling Silva, and it's
pretty scary. I never noticed the looks thing until my roomate said something
at 1:00 am Sunday Morning when he saw the guys picture on the front page of the
Globe. Glad the store was empty, as my roomate was loaded and not as quiet as I
would have liked.
