Took a tour of the Boston Beer Company's boutique "research" brewery
in JP on Saturday with Marsden and Erica's father and brother. (They
really brew their beer in Penn and Washington, but they were goaded
    into opening a Boston brewery.)

    Marsden absolutely loved the barley.

We (except Marsden) sampled the standard Sam Adams Boston Ale (good),
a wouldn't pass the german purity laws Wheat beer doctored with Cranberry
and Maple Syrup (odd citrus feel to that one) and then the Triple Bock.

Now, an uncarbonated beer "aged" for 6 months in Jack Daniel's casks
isn't what most people think of with beer. A small bottle of beer
priced like a cheap wine isn't either. Personally, I prefer a
more complex sherry that's made with grapes, not grain.

And two thumbs up for Doyle's fish and chips, one thumbs up for the
beef stew, and a little tiny enthusiastic thumbs up for their franks
and beans (but Marsden didn't like the brown bread).

If anyone happens to find yourself in Toronto during your travels, I
recommend a tour of the Upper Canada Brewery. It's free, takes about
90 minutes, and they are VERY generous with the taste-testing. Since
there are 10 different beers to taste...well...you get the picture.

    Best freebie in town.

I was reading an article in a magazine last night. Apparently,it`s big
areas of the city cordoned off,and you sit in on wooden trestles
swigging down steins of very strong lager for hours on end. Big

other so called 'premium labels' this baby has a better body
than a DB7. The distinctive taste of this brew immediately
named itself. i.e. Tatties & Lynx.

No. 2 Hampden lager - Yet another gem to come from that home of
the sharp minded ad exec , Glesca. Gives off a lovely bouquet
of bigots & wintergreen wi the odd whiff of burnt ozone. A

The best porter is the one I'm drinking right now. (Don't take that
    literally.)

They are all different, but the same. Most have their merits. (There
are real dogs out there.) But these best beer arguments are
nonsense. It's like arguing about best red wine. There are many many
fine red wines. There are even many many fine Barolos or Zins.
Arguing that a Barolo is better than a Zin is like arguing that
a sirloin is better than a lobster. They are different. They *should*
    be different.

So, arguing that a porter is better than a double bock is nonsense.
If you like a porter, judge it as a porter. If you don't like a
porter, don't drink it. (Unless you are into liking things you don't
    like.)

As far as Sam Adams, the mega-micro, their Honey Porter and Double Bock
are far too inconsistent batch to batch. Clearly they are shipping
    what other (mini-micros) wouldn't. But I still haven't ever had a
return to store six pack from the mega-micro, but have had that happen
    with a few other mini-micros.

As far as Sam Adams vrs Catamount vrs Samuel Smith's Porters.

There are times that what I want to drink the first, times when I want
to drink the second, and times when I want to splurge and drink the
third. There are even, *gasp*, times I want to drink a porter served
in a Utah Brew Pup. (Bonus points for the first person who identifies
the distinguishing feature of such a porter.)

Subj:	Best Beer for Slugs

Since slug control seems to be a perennial topic and the use of beer as a
control methods has been knocked about a bit I thought I might report on a
somewhat obscure (but obviously highly important) piece of research carried
out in 1987 by Professor Whitney Cranshaw at Colorado State University. He
had heard about the use of beer to attract and kill slugs by allowing them
to drink themselves to death, but the question in his mind was, "What beer
is best - what beer do slugs prefer?"

His experiment examined 12 different brands of beer plus Gallo Pink Chablis
wine (who knew how cosmopolitan slugs really were?), a sugar, water and
yeast mix and as a control Fort Collins Colorado tap water. The beers
tested included:
Budweiser, Coors, Coors Light, Miller, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Kingsbury
Malt Beverage, Schaefer, Miller Lite, Bud Light, Old Milwaukee, Michelob and
Stroh's.

Each test liquid was replicated four times and the test ran for 8
weeks, in which time nearly 4,000 slugs had given their bodies to science as
part of the test.

Any ideas on which beer, or other tested liquid proved to be the
slug's choice? Stay tuned for the results in an upcoming post!

(Sorry, I just couldn't resist letting this hang for a day - I post the
outcome over the weekend)

Everyone have a great gardening weekend with plenty of sun or rain, which
ever YOUR gardens needs.

Here in Ontario you can go to a place that has all you need and brew on
the premises. It's fun, you get the best ingredients, and your house is
free of the mess and clutter. You go back in a couple of weeks to
bottle your filtered beer. And, it's good, very good. I prefer it to
any store bought stuff. The only thing is, unless it's kept cool, it
will go bad as the yeast has been filtered out. And yes, the
carbonation is added at bottling time.

Adding the carbo at bottling time is cheating. The right way to do it
is to prime the bottle with a small amount of sugar when you bottle.
The residual live yeast will eat the sugar and carbonate the beer for
    you.

Lately, I've been using a beer machine. I wasn't that thrilled with
the concept at first (got it as a prezzie) but it's working out to be a
flexible, no-mess way of brewing. I use canned English style worts
such as Firkin's Bitter & Dog Boulter which are 40-pint brews instead
of the awful thin 20-pint worts that came with the machine. Brew under
pressure for 7-10 days, let sit in the fridge for three days and it
comes out clear as crystal with no need to fine. Then either drink it
cellared, keg style (carbonated) or let off the pressure and bottle it
with very little corn sugar per bottle. It throws a little sediment on
the secondary fermentation but again clears nicely.

Purists will be aghast at this sacrilege, but it makes a good pint.

To the contrary. It might MYG, but it didn't MMG at all. It was very
tasty. It might not be to your liking, and certainly isn't similar
to any classic brews, I'm sure, but that doesn't make it terrible.

imnsho - The best beer in the world would have to be a pint of Stella
Atois, as served from the pump in a French pub. Most other beers in the
world really are crap. I realise that stouts/ales/bitters are of a good
quality however i don't consume it so have no other opinion.

I mean if you look at it further : Stella is a beer that has a unique
taste, great texture and a suitable alcohol content, not too excessive
    just perfect.

Looking forward to having a few pints of that upon my return to
Blighty. It tastes good there, however, as with any other beer that
leaves it country of origin, the taste seems to differ !

Why is it that happens ? I have got so many examples of beers/lagers
that change taste/effect/alcohol levels etc but claim to be the same
    thing.

Stella Artois is very nice indeed, though a tad too strong my tastes.
It`s fine if you just have one or two,but a little too much if you
have 7 or 8. Er,far too much in fact.

For excessive lager intake,I think it is far wiser to stick to your
Fosters,Heineken,Tennents Pilsner,Carling Black Label etc. Though
I suppose it depends what your metabolism is used to. When I was
a lad,I used to drink nothing but strong lager, and called anyone
who didn`t a puff. Which shows what a sad case I am.

The worst culprit in my opinion is Carlsberg Export. It goes down
really easily but gets you utterly brahms.

Saturday night Karen and I were wandering along Boylston trying to find
a suitable spot for a nightcap. Well, every joint was jumpin', and at
the one place that looked like it had ANY room at all, we got carded.
Karen, being 32, didn't think to bring her ID with her. I, being 31,
had mine anyway, but that weren't good enough for them, so...

We eventually tried the lobby of the Hilton, near the Hynes Convention
Centre. The bar there was called `Boodles', and it turned out to be a
great find. They had over 100 different beers, most from small,
out-of-state breweries. I tried a Middlesex Raspberry Wheat, and a
Lemon Lager whose brand name I have forgotten (something with an X in
    the middle, like `Saxon'...).

Yeah, it's delicious. They do it by putting lemon juice in after the

                             Beer is the Solution
                                by David Barry

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is
beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the
wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

Also, the wheel does not cure the common cold, whereas beer does. This
was proved in a recent experiment in which scientists placed two groups
of cold sufferers in a bowling alley. One group was given all the beer
it could drink, while the other group was given only water. After two
or three weeks, the beer drinkers exhibited no cold symptoms whatsoever,
in fact couldn't even stand up; whereas the water drinkers had all gone
   home.

Beer can also be used to halt the nuclear arms race. Right now the
missile negotiators drink coffee, so after three or four cups they get
very snappish, which leads to increased international tension:

RUSSIAN: As I understand your proposal, you wish us to remove our
Thundersquat missiles from Hungary, and in return you
will- Would you please stop that?
   AMERICAN: Stop what?
RUSSIAN: Tinkling your spoon against your saucer. All morning long
it's tinkle, tinkle, tinkle. You sound like the collar on
a flea-infested dog. I can barely hear myself negotiate.
AMERICAN: Is that so? Did it ever occur to you that I might be
tinkling my saucer so that I will not have to listen to
you snort the same wad of mucus back up your nose every
twenty-five seconds precisely by my watch? You cling to
that wad as if it had great sentimental value.
RUSSIAN: Not at all. Let me get rid of it right now. (He blows
his nose on the American proposal.)

In their statements to the press, both sides try to put the best
possible face on things ("RUSSIANS EXPRESS VIEWS ON U.S. PROPOSAL"),
but the truth is they aren't getting anywhere. Now if you give those
same negotiators a keg of beer, after an hour or so you'll see all kinds
   of nuclear cooperation:

AMERICAN: Tell you what. You take all your missiles out of France,
and we'll send you over some decent men's suits.
RUSSIAN: Great! Wait a minute. I don't think we have any missiles
              in France.
AMERICAN: Then put some in, for God's sake!
RUSSIAN: Okay, but won't that irritate the French?
AMERICAN: Don't worry about the little snots. If they give us any
trouble, we'll have Jerry Lewis shot.

With this kind of cooperation, we'd have a lasting arms agreement in no
time, and all thanks to beer.

                              THE STORY OF BEER

One day nearly a thousand years ago, two serfs were working the soil in
medieval England when one of them accidentally knocked some grain,
yeast, hops, and sugar into a bucket of water. As the two serfs watched
in fascination, the mixture began to ferment, and some knights rode up
behind them and whacked off their heads with swords, as was the custom
   in those days.

"This is hot work," said one of the knights. "I could forsooth get
behind a clean, crisp, cold beverage."

"Begorrah," said another. "Let's go to Germany, where beer was recently
   invented."

And so they did, and they thought the new invention was terrific, except
that they had to go to the bathroom all the time, which is extremely
annoying when you are wearing armor. So they decided to quit being
knights and start the Renaissance, yet another of the many fine benefits
   we derive from beer.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BEER

   I really don't know. Back in 1981, I sent away for a mail-order kit
that is supposed to enable you to make your own beer at home. I take
this kit out from time to time, to look at it. It's sitting next to me
   as I write these words.

The problem is that you need a bunch of empty beer bottles to put your
homemade beer in, so the first thing I always do is go out and buy a
case of beer and start drinking it, to empty the bottles. While I am
doing this I read the kit directions, and I notice that if I start
making beer right now, I won't have any actual beer to drink for more
than fifteen days. Also I will have to become involved with something
called "wort." So I always decide to stick with store-bought beer and
save my kit for use during an emergency, such as following a nuclear
attack. I hate to be a pessimist, but I, for one, intend to remain
fully prepared for this terrible possibility until I see some clear sign
of a lessening of international tension, such as that the missile
negotiators send out for a pizza.

Some time ago, somewhere in here (though not in this string), I mentioned
having received a brew sack for Christmas last year (after which Mr. Bill
told me it was a crap product, if I recall correctly). Anyway, it turns
out the actual brand name on this puppy is Brewking and it comes from
Scotland (The Malt Extract Factory, Kirkliston, West Lothian, to be exact).

So the other night I finally got around to starting the thing - pretty simple:
Open the cap, remove the seal, pour in 3 quarts of hot water, swish
it around to dissolve the malt syrup, add 7 quarts of cold water,
swish again, add yeast and replace the cap which includes a pressure
relief valve. (There's a tap at the base of the bag.)

One of the "helpful hints" listed says that after a day or two, due to the
build up of gas from the fermentation process, the bag will become "rigid".

Damn - they weren't kidding! This thing is as bloated and stiff as a raccoon
on a Jersey roadside in August!

    depends,

there are a lot of debates about when and how to add bfruit, and it
depends on the beer. Lambics generally have the fruit added after the
primary fermentation and the fruit kicks up the fermentation again.

some people throw the fruit in in the final boiling minutes of the wart
stage and before yeasting, some people add whole or crushed fruit at
the same time as yeasting, arguing that cooking the fruit changes both
the character and flavor of the brew.

Take you best shot and pitch it whenever. I am asking frank to pitch
crushed rasberries into the next wart, just before pitching the yeast.

I think you might be a tad off, here (about the 18%). I would say it
may be 6.0% or thereabouts- if I had to make a guess (I have tried it).

As a general rule, ale/lager yeast peters out at about 12%. To raise
the alcohol level beyond this, you would have to add wine or champaign
yeast to the wort. The cost in ingredients to make such a strong malt
beverage would be prohibitive, though (you have to have a LOT of
fermentables to even reach the 8% mark- trust me, that's what my last
homebrewed stout ended up as, and it was most expensive.

Of course, the federal government would not allow an 18% beverage to be
labelled "beer/ale/lager/porter/stout", in any case. This is strong
even for a wine, though I did once make a mead that toped this mark. 8^)

Wine, beer, liquor benefit the heart
		      ------------------------------------

        From Science News, December 2, 1995, Vol. 148, No. 23, Pg 380
	Author - L. Seachrist

They call it the French paradox: Despite a diet high in saturated fats,
the French suffer far less heart disease than do their U.S.
counterparts. In studying the phenomenon, researchers noted that the
French drink more red wine than people in the United States do.

Armed with that information, some scientists claimed that flavonoids in
the wine serve as antioxidants, which protect the heart. Several recent
studies have maintained that red wine is more healthful for the heart
    than other types of alcohol.

Now, scientists from Harvard Medical School in Boston report that a cold
beer provides the same heart benefits as the fruit of the vine.

    J. Michael Gaziano and his colleagues studied 340 men and women who had
suffered heart attacks and compared their drinking habits to those of an
equal number of healthy people of the same ages. The team found that
drinking one-half drink to two drinks - regardless of the type of
alcohol - per day reduces the risk of heart attack by 45 percent.
Moreover, beer, wine, and liquor all raised the concentrations of HDL,
or "good" cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent.

Gaziano maintains that the increase in HDL explains the reduction in
heart attack risk. "Two martinis is no different from two glasses of
    red wine," he says.

That's not to say that flavonoids don't benefit the heart. John D.
Folts of the University of Wisconsin - Madison maintains that it takes a
lot of alcohol - three times the legal limit for driving - to help the
    heart by reducing platelet activity.

He and his colleagues studied the effects of a capsule form of
flavonoids on blocked arteries in monkeys. The flavonoids worked as
well as, if not better than, aspirin at turning down the platelet
activity and thus unblocking the monkeys' arteries.

There is an advantage to flavonoids. "Adrenaline can completely wipe
our aspirin's beneficial effects," says Folts. "But adrenaline doesn't
    affect the flavonoids."

Whether it's the alcohol alone or the flavonoids in the alcoholic
beverages, a drink a day may protect the heart. But before you say,
"Bottoms up!" Gaziano cautions, remember that drinking more than
moderate amounts of alcohol damages the heart.

Damper is a sort of semi kinda nearly bread type thing. It dosn't freeze woth
a damn, and it MUST be eaten fresh - preferably hot.
I don't have a recipe available and I can't remember what I used last
time I made it. I'll try and do some this week and get back to you with a
rough guide of "how to". Beer dampers are good with BBQs and *strong* beefy
soups/stews.

The whole damn bag-o-beer? It's pretty unwieldy, hanging from that hook
down in the basement. Perchance for the 'bash I should bring it along
for those who care to take a chance. I just don't know how to transport
it without perturbing it. Mebbe if I brought it a few days ahead of time...

Liquor panel requires minor changes in naughty beer label

LANSING, Mich. -- It can be mean and green, but don't call it obscene.

The makers of Bad Frog beer can keep a label showing a frog flipping the
bird -- if they eliminate the word "obscene" from the beer's slogan, the
Michigan Liquor Control Commission said Wednesday.

The beer, brewed in Michigan by Frankenmuth Brewery Inc., has a label
featuring a picture of a real frog, altered so that its right arm is
turned upward and a finger extended in the well-known gesture.

The last line of the label reads, "It's mean, green and obscene."

"It's hilarious that we can say on the label that a frog is obscene and
some people actually take us serious," said Bad Frog Brewery Co. President
Jim Wauldron, who agreed to drop the word from the label.

Company officials had argued at a hearing last month that they were trying
to change the obscene gesture into a signal for ordering a beer. They also
contended the gesture could not be obscene because a frog has only four
fingers, not five, so couldn't possibly be raising its middle digit.

The commission's order said the label "may be clearly offensive to some,
(but) it is not so patently offensive that the advertising and promotion
of Bad Frog beer should be banned completely in this state."

Commission Chairman Phil Arthurhultz said the company can continue to sell
and produce its beer in Michigan, as long as it removes the offending word
and advertises only in bars, not in stores, to prevent minors from seeing
    the company's marketing trademark.

"It would have been difficult for us, having granted commission approval
(for the trademark), to rescind that approval. That's the bottom line,"
    Arthurhultz said.

The beer is sold in six other states: Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin,
Virginia, Rhode Island and Florida. Ohio refused to sell it because of the
    label.

Bad Frog lawyer Kenneth Flaska said the label wasn't meant to be obscene
and is tamer than some beer ads.

"If the Bud Light ladies in thong bikinis are not indecent or obscene, it's
hard to imagine our little frog would be indecent or obscene," Flaska told
    the commission last month.

Foster's is Australian but it is being brewed for North American
distribution in Canada. The list serves as a reminder of why I place
no faith in Consumer Reports. BTW, did you know that Stroh's backwards

Most of their listings I hesitate to put under the category of "beer".
A few are acceptable "light" brews, but none are full-bodied IMO.

For each style of beer, I can't much fault the ratings.

If you don't like "Regular and Ice Beer" American style beer,
than you won't like Old Milwaukee, Stroh's or Red Dog. But
if you do, I just can't fault their picks.

For "Light Beers" American style beer, Michelob Light, Bud Light and
Natural Light are all fine brews - for that style. If you like that
style, they aren't bad picks. If you *DON'T* like that style, don't
drink them. (And yeah, you'll get the won't-drink-anything-but
Miller Lite folks arguing here, but hey....)

For Nonalcoholic Beers, Sharp's is the only brew in that style that
I'd place outside the oxymoron category. (Coors still makes me gak
    for other reasons.)

    etc etc etc.

Had an interesting beer experiment last weekend. On impulse, I bought
a six pack of Apollo beer. It was an ale and it was rather interesting
tasting. Don't know if I'd buy it again. Tasted similar to Sam Adams
which I really don't care for. The packaging is what brought me to buy
it. Six pack carrier is all black with a very minimalist logo. The
bottles are dark blue with clear labels. Anyone else in here tried it?

> Is that a fact?

	According to http://www.guinness.ie/brewing/html/brewing/, Guinness
buys a total of 90,000 tonnes of barley per year, 17,000 is roasted
(18.8%), 10,000 is steamed and rolled (11.1%), the rest is malted.

So it does, indeed seem to be a fact. Depending of course on your
	personal definition of "small percentage".

Well, yes and no. What we commonly refer to as Guinness in
the US, does contain hops. However, there is one variation
(not exported to the US) that is "All Malt".

Beer by the bavarian purity code is beer, but I like fruit beers if
they are not over fruited or sugared (blurrgh0

I nice, dry ale with raspberry and hops is a thing of beuty, not only
in the glass (a pale red) but also in the flavor, raspberry nose and
taste without the sweetness. They are difficult to make. Frank has
had two perfect batches, tossed one into the compost heap (problems
with wild yeast here in the spring) and had one so sour it was almost
undrinkable. it is a far cry from some of the commerical fruit beers,
but Framboisen by New belgium Brewery in ft Collins comes close. Too
many people and breweries are adding extra sugars and making soda pop
    instead of beer.

for a majo fruit tast without a lot of sweetness, I still recommend
Lambics. they are not a fruit beer, so to speak, but they are tasty
    and not over sugared.
