861.0. "Tennis" by GAAS::BRAUCHER (And nothing else matters) Tue Jun 03 1997 15:44

I surprises me that we do not have a tennis topic, it being far and
away the best sport both for participating and for spectating.

And the apalling performances by American men on the red clay at the
French Open this week are certainly noteworthy.

It is also worth talking about the remarkable 16-year old Martina Hingis
from Switzerland. Number one in the world according to the ATP computer,
she seems headed for a showdown with Steffi.

Funny..I was out for a walk last night and went by some tennis courts in
town and was wondering if many people play tennis anymore. I recall a time
when one couldn't get on a court without a long wait.

B-Ball is almost as bad as tennis. Any sport where you have to watch
people or a ball or puck or such move back and forth at a high rate of
speed is useless IMHO. At least B-ball and Hockey have gratuitous
violence on occasion to make it interesting. Come to think of it,
tennis can get verbally violent and we see spoiled rich kids throw
    tantrums on occasion.

To watch it's rowing (crewing). Of course, I may be a bit prejudiced as
my son rows for his school. To participate in I like X-C skiing or
    hiking. Get out into nature.

I also like to watch pro golf because the scenery is purty and these
guys are very good at what they do and pro bowling to see if someone
gets a perfect game on national tv. Horse racing is also fun to watch
and bet on on occasion. We may get a triple crown winner this year.

    Bright Blessings,

what ever happened to tennis? it was such a hot sport
in the late '70s early '80s! Connors, MacEnroe, Martina,
Chrissie Evert - they were so much fun to watch!

The men's game turned boring with all those super servers,
and the fancy schmancy rackets and wickit short points.

Graf is great but she's like a machine on the court (not that
fun to watch). Maybe this 16-year old will give her a run for
    her money.

It's all too easy to get injured with tennis. It happened to me just
last weekend. Watching the French Open, I moved from the sofa to the
floor in front of the TV so I could follow the path of the ball
better (it's hard to see against the terre batteau (sp?)). Watched
from the floor for a half hour or so, then when I got up, I had this
awful back spasm that took three days to go away.

IMHO, the only game that is good to both watch and participate in is
Rugby. Where else could you spend a couple of hours with your
head jammed in between the sweaty thighs of two simian forwards,
your hand up between the legs of one, clutching the waistband of his
shorts? Meanwhile, the opposing 2nd row forward is trying to bite off
one ear while their hooker is flailing his boots not inches from
your other.

I amazed we don't have a Rugby Union note.

Trouble is Shawn, I have observed attempts to start notes dedicated
to a particular topic. Digressions usually start a nanosecond later.
It's a far better strategy to start a digression and let things run
their course. If it should transpire that sufficient interest is
generated, our noble and vigilant Mods will create a topic. That
way, I'm not left looking like a total plonker when no one responds
to my esoteric interests.

Speaking of sailing, and getting about as far off the topic
of lawn tennis as I can, cos it's chite boring anyway, me dad
just came back from a cruise round the Med. The ship was chock
full of wild Canadians and he had a cracking time. Barcelona to
Marseilles, then across to Italy, a day in Rome, back via Nice
to Barcelona for a tour. He's the colour of old mahogany and
looks ten years younger. He never seems to get ill or moans
about anything and is determined to live it up.

How dare he enjoy merry retirement while I have to work, the
bugger. Why, oh why, don't we have a "My Parents" note?

Speaking of tennis stars :-) we won our match last night in the Digital
gma geezer doubles league, bringing us to 2-2 in the round-robin with 4
more to play (9 teams entered). I think nh has a DEC league also. This
is down from as many as 15-16 teams as little as 5 years ago, but it's
still fun. They also have a singles league.

Back in the last labor shortage, tech companies vied with each other by
providing health clubs and sports facilities. Wang even had a golf course.
There are two fine Digital courts at the Stow facility, and they are still
maintained. Occasionally we get in a set at lunch there, but the matches
take too long and are played after work.

Nowadays, Digital has plants without even showers. They'd rather we
were unhealthy, since death and disease are administratively easier than
 other forms of happysizing...

Sometimes tennis is entertaining to see although these days
the men's field just doesn't do it for me. Well, I do like
to watch Agassi if he is on his game.

There were a couple matches that rank right up with the best
sports I have ever seen. #1 (of course) is Borg's final Wimble-
don victory which was over McEnroe. 4th set tiebreaker went to
something like 20-18. Unbelievable. 5th set went to something
      like 10 games to 8.

Battis, I liked Bork a lot, but I think, in his prime, that
McEnroe was the best. As an 18 year old, he was already getting
good enough to give Borg all he could handle.

At risk of descending into a morass of linguistic precision,
not one response in here is actually on the subject of tennis.
Tennis, strictly speaking, refers to Court or Royal tennis,
sometimes referred to a Real Tennis. It is a game played
in a court and more akin to squash or racquetball. The
modern outdoor game of 'Lawn Tennis' evolved from that
ancient game. Both games are ruled by separate national
and international governing bodies.

There should really be a separate "Lawn Tennis" note,
I think.
