    If I recall correctly, the first governer of NH emigrated here from
    Wales.  He was a strict Puritan, but the sect never really caught on in
    Wales because of its extreme intolerance and attempts to impose the
    English speaking church on the people by similar laws.  Goes
    against the traditional historical view of the Puritans as seekers of

    Political power was largely in the hands of religious leaders back in
    those days.  Today it is largely in the hands of political leaders.

Depends on what you mean.

The Puritans in England had the intention of enforcing their particular beliefs
and modes of worship on the Church of England.  They were not being very
successful in this endeavor, and some of them came to the United States in
order to be free to establish their own religion here.

The Puritans did briefly succeed in England.  They won the English Civil War
and put St. Charles, King and Martyr, to death.  Their "Glorious" Commonwealth
lasted all of eleven years, during which time the monarchy, the House of Lords,
the Book of Common Prayer, and the bishops were banned.  At the Restoration in
1660, the monarchy, the Lords, and the Church of England (including bishops)
were restored.

    That may be true of England, but it was different in Wales, which never
    really accepted the English church.  Attempts at another new world
    colony during this time were made by Welsh emigrants - perhaps trying to
    escape Puritan oppression under the Propagation Act.  An ill-fated colony
    was established at Avalonia in Newfoundland in 1625.  Later, there were
    mass emigrations of Welsh Quakers who emigrated to Penn due to long-standing
    differences with the Puritan sect over opression at home.  It's an
    interesting sideline to the other historical events at this time.

    I wonder exactly when the prevailing sentiment changed to "Live free or
    die".  In fact I wonder if that even IS the prevailing sentiment in NH
    or anywhere else in the US.

      I dunno.  Bashing Clinton is easy and fun.  I won't stop for
     20 years.  Since he hasn't done anything much, I agree that the
     list of bad things he has done is short.  In the long run, he is
     mostly just another forgettable prex (quick, who was between Polk
     and Fillmore ?)  But his many gaffs, denials, shamefaced admissions
     are the stuff of true humor.  Who better to bash ?  That's the job.

    I don't sympathize as far as Jocelyn goes.  Bill Clinton could have
    picked a PR competent individual with the same outlook on issues, like
    legalizing drugs.  Problem here is Elders was an Arkansas hack who
    unfortunately is known for passing out thousands of defective condoms
    to the Arkansas public school system.  In short, she was an inept boob!
    
    You shouldn't be mad at Clinton for his laxness on gay rights.  You
    should be mad for his lack of forsight.  The man picked this as his
    first plan of action.  He had the military against him, the Joint
    Chiefs against him, and a good segment of the population.  What a
    boneheaded thing to address his first week in office.  STUUPID!

      Speaking of loose cannon Elders, has anybody noticed just how
     little the country has missed having a Surgeon General ?  One
     of the neat things about deadlock is that many government
     do-nothing sinecures go vacant for a while because the Senate
     confirmation process breaks down.  This has the added benefit
     that the Senate is therefore too busy to pass legislation.

    And you're right about taking on the military -- but having done it he
    should at least have done it right.  He came across in that and the
    gay marriage thing as just being a pushover.  If he had persisted and
