The modern politikally korrekt term for "trailers" these days

A modular home has nothing to do with "trailers" or mobile homes. They
are standard houses brought to the site in pieces, and are usually
indistinguishable from normal carpenter-built houses once done.

Hmm, I suppose a doublewide trailer would technically be a "modular home".
But true modular homes are very nice, and are usually stick-built. They
shouldn't be any more prone to tornadoes than standard stick-built houses.

    > But true modular homes are very nice...

Matter of opinion. I've investigated them - once, even, with an eye
toward purchase - and found them not at all nice. They look pretty,
but behind that nice paint and sheetrock are thin walls and, all too
often, formed-up sheet steel studs stuck together with self-drilling
screws. I once lived in a steel-stud house. Never again.

    > shouldn't be any more prone to tornadoes...

Nobody has ever built a house that can stand up to a direct hit by a
tornado. The best houses, modular or otherwise, can stand a force-5
hurricane, but tornadoes generate winds far faster than that. And a
tornado's intense low pressure causes houses to explode, it does not
blow them down the way a hurricane does.

I'm sure it's like everything else, there are good products and there are
bad ones. You can get crummy houses built by a local contractor as well.

BTW, what do steel studs do for a house? No noise supression?

> > shouldn't be any more prone to tornadoes...

> tornado.

Wasn't talking about direct hits. I've seen enough pictures of midwestern
toothpickvilles to know that. A close brush does generate forces that should
be survivable by a well-built house. Everyone jokes how trailer parks seem
to attract tornadoes but what really happens in most cases are near misses
that generate enough force to damage this type of home but not nearby standard
construction.

    That, among other things.

Ever try to drive a nail through a piece of sheet metal that would flex
out of the way every time you whacked the hammer? Makes it a real
pleasure to hang pictures. Much more fun than just whacking a nail
through the sheetrock into a nice wooden stud.

Ever try to drill a hole slantwise on a metal surface where you
couldn't get in to make a prick punch mark for a center? Makes it a
real pleasure to add junction boxes. Much more fun than toenailing a
couple of 8-penny nails into a nice wooden stud.

Ever wish you could mount a safe into the wall and not have it be live
electrically if there's a grounding failure? Barrel of laughs, every
time you touch it you get a little buzz.

Ever lived on a floodplain - on a slab, no basement - and had your
walls start seeping rusty water after a particularly wet monsoon
season? Painting with stainkill and fresh paint is loads more fun than
sitting back and sucking on a cold brewski while you watch the Sox lose
    another one.

I really wish I'd invented the machine I read about recently, which will soon
be in many grocery stores..you can walk up to it with a whole mess o' change,
dump it in the machine and it will sort it out and spit out a leetle piece of
paper which you redeem at the checkout stand (minus 7% for processing) for cash
 or towards your grocery bill.

It's a natural outgrowth of the reduced service banking running
rampant. Ever try to get change counted for you at the bank? Talk about
lazy- they've got a change machine sitting in the corner, but they only
allow you to get your change counted at certain times during certain
days of the week (statistically calculated to be most inconvenient over
their customer base) and only if the one employee who's been trained to
operate the machine is in (it's a highly complex matter involving
turning on a power switch and pouring the coins into a hopper). And you

I never have more than 3-5 $1 coins, 3-6 quarters, 5-10 dimes, 4-6 nickels,
and/or 4-6 pennies in my loose change at a time.

Manage your cash flow, and you'll never need one of these silly things,
unless you're running some sort of business that involves making change.

I have enough to deal with without worrying about setting coin carrying
guidelines. I gets home at night and dump the stuff in a jar..I fish out
the quarters to use in the laundry room at the apt, and occasionally for
use at buying newspapers in the morning.

Yes, I've often wished for that myself. But then, I figured that:

    1. There wouldn't be much left to read after I populated it.
    2. I already pretty much do a "manual killfile" by being real fast
on the KP3 upon seeing certain names in the header.
    3. If I told someone in here that I was adding their name to my
"killfile", they would misunderstand the term, and then the next
person I'd see would be a cop and/or a Digital manager.

If I was 5' tall, 5'10" would probably make for a sore neck on one or

or a bit taller, but not so tall I have to stretch to give a kiss on

By the same token, Glen's self-expression is frequently cruder than
what people "should have to stand for" as well. Is John frequently
incivil? Absolutely. Does Glen intentionally behave in such a way as to
engender such responses? You betcha. Glen is clearly not concerned with
civility, otherwise he'd be a little less crude when his vulgarity
draws objection from the population at large. Instead he seems to get
some sort of cheap thrill from the revulsion people feel from his
frequently graphic descriptions of his sex life. Now I'm not going to
pretend that the fact that the sex in question is homosexual in nature

We're discussing innuendos. I really don't *care* what floats John's

Doc, believe it or not (and I'm sure you won't), covert doesn't even

would mean that Covert is part of my entire life. I'm crude. I realize that.
But MOST of the time, getting a reaction out of Covert doesn't play into it.

| Instead he seems to get some sort of cheap thrill from the revulsion people

My sex life? Where have I mentioned that? I don't remember saying

In many states, including mine, perverted behaviour has the same sanctions

Jim, I think it is stupid for someone to bring up a law to back a point
when they only use part of that law. Would Doc, or anyone else who would use
the sodomy law to back their view also turn around and state that oral sex is
also something no one should be doing, and make as big of an issue about oral
sex that they do about anal sex?

They way I see it, and of course it doesn't mean it is correct or not,
but I see that oral sex is seen as something that happens, so it is no big
whoop. Anal sex is something that isn't something that happens as often, so it
is viewed differently.

You argued that John's consistency in taking a position against anal
sex regardless of the orientations of the participants was a sham
because "they oughtta be able to do it". I merely contradicted the
assertion that John's consistency is a sham by reminding you that "they
oughtta be able to do it" is irrelevant in the eyes of the law. You
then claim that the law is being referred to in order to back up my

Those are the best! Nature the way it really is, no anthropomorphism,
no cute cuddlies, etc. It gives you an appreciation for how tenuous a
grip life really is. Consider the predators. As young they are
extremely vulnerable, same as any prey. Over time, they must learn to
kill to survive, and if they fail they die. If they succeed, another
animal must die. It's all part of the brilliant system of checks and
    balances.

I was watching a show the other night about different lion tribes and

who had two cubs and (thankfully) I missed the beginning of the show,
so I don't know what became of them.... only that they were gone.
According to the narrator, it was probably the last litter she would
have because of her age. So anyway... the mama lion kept searching all
their old playing spots making this really mournful sound. I couldn't
watch it anymore. I flipped back about 15 minutes later, and the mother

One of the last ones I saw showed a moose giving birth to a calf. They
went on to say how critical it was that the baby moose survive its
first year, and explained the many dangers it would face. The next day,
a pack of wolves surrounded the cow and calf. The cow moose would chase
off any intrepid wolf that ventured too close- and the wolves were
hungry! Fortunately the cow managed to discourage the wolves and they
went onto easier prey. After another week or so, a sow grizzly caught
the scent of the moose. Grizzlies are essentially the only predators
that can take down a full grown, healthy moose by themselves. Well the
cow tried to get the grizzly's attention, but the plaintive bleating of
the baby moose became its focus, and it wasn't long before the chomping
    began.

Yes, according to my back country Yellowstone guide, humans are not
a priority food item of grizzers. After killing a hiker, a grizzer will
tear open the backpack looking for gorp before eating the hiker.

In groups of 4 or more hikers, grizzly attacks are rare, because the
bear sees it as too much bother over a non-preferred food item.

Famous Chilean patriot Bernardo O'Higgins. Near the Brookline/Brighton border,
there's a sign designating an intersection Bernardo O'Higgins Square. The "o"
in Bernardo was tacked on as an afterthought. Presumably the sign maker didn't
know S.A. history.

    TTWF: some of this

1988 Vosne-Romanee "Cros Parantoux- Henri Jayer

Simply said, no one has ever made finer wine than Henri Jayer. His
competitors are not Leroy, DRC, or Petrus, but rather Van Gogh, Mozart,
and Picasso! This wine has a 100 point nose: exploding from the glass
with magical scents of cooked plums, duck, cassis, French roast,
vinesmoke, beetroot, and cedary, spicy wood. Deep, dark and intensely
black fruity. Young and profound on the palate, with the "baked fruit"
of the vintage (similar to 1982 Bordeaux), with extraordinary length
and grip, a massive core of sweet, ripe red fruits, and firm, chewy
tannins on the finish. The palate impression is of a great reduction
sauce of Pinot Noir, with more intensity than I have ever encountered
in the likes of La Tache or Richebourg (excepting Leroy's), coupled to
a poise and balance that leaves in impression of lightness of touch! An
immense, deeply powerful wine that is still years away from its
profound peak of maturity. Patience is required, but will be rewarded
graciously. The result of inspired vision that knows no compromise. I
stand in awe at the work of a genius. 2004-2040. 97+.

Still can't find a $14.99 (regular-sized) bottle of port that comes close

Uhm... no. Let's see... my finished system will have four amplifiers,
a CD, DVD, VCR, and powered sub. That's a heap o' cables. Even the
less expensive esoteric brands are easily a $100 each (on the low end).

No, I don't have any $100 cables in my system, currently... no need,
I'm not running equipment that would really benefit from them (my
custom pair was only $70, and each cable is 8' long).

Of course, I was not real serious about the four figures for cable, as
I'll likely never own a Mark Levinson front end, unless I win the

I'm not sure it's the juxtaposition of poverty to riches that's at the
root of it. I think it's more likely everything else. When you're poor,
few people call to beg you for money. When you win the lottery, your
name is a matter of public record and there's a whole bunch of people
who come out of the woodwork to pester you for donations to their pet
worthy causes. It's amazing how many people end up having to change
their phone number to do away with the immediate requests for money.
But they can still flood your mailbox.

Then there's the issue of new "friends" that show up when they've found
out you won the lottery. Are they there because they want to be friends
or because you might spend money on them? It's not always easy to tell,
so you begin to become suspicious of new "friends." Some of your old
friends become jealous of your good fortune, leading to a loss of
    friendship on that front. etc.

Some people have never had enough money to worry about; now they have
something to lose. Now they have the added stress of not squandering
    all that money.

personally, I think that money alone isn't the answer to every problem.
Peoplpe who are rich still have problems; they're just different
    problems.

mother that if she ever could, she would help rebuild this church in
some town - was it Methuen ? Funny thing was, she wasn't even a member
of that church - the dead mother was. So there was a picture of her
handing this minister a surprise donation that filled the impossible

As I said... you assume facts not in evidence. You have judged me by
    your experience with others.

And just because I don't agree with someone in the notesfiles, does not
mean I don't respect them as a person (male or female is irrelevant).
And quite frankly, how in the world can you assume I am dishonest by my
entries in the notes conferences? I certainly do not take unpopular
stands because I enjoy the abuse!

To be honest, I think you and I would get along quite well in person.
I don't hold anyone to their notes persona (or any insults that may
have flown my way from that noter... heck, that's part of the fun in
here), nor do I disrespect them because their beliefs are different than
    mine.

I don't expect anyone else to share this position, though. I guess if
we ever did meet, you would already have your mind made up about me

you're a devout Christian, and it's written that they shalt not bear

It has never been any other way. I've goten riled from time to time,

At no time did I stop respecting them as individuals, no matter how

Yes, we have a singles group, and I was very active in it at one time.
One small problem... it seems that it's mostly just the brothers
getting together, very few women bother to show up. The ones that do
    are always with someone.

Keep in mind that my church is approximately 45% singles, and that
MAYBE 20 guys and three girls (that are available) show up for whatever
event, it gets rather disapointing. I do enjoy the volleyball
get-togethers, regardless, and will continue to attend these when they
    have them.

Don't get me wrong, I like to chat with my church brothers,
and we usually get into some pretty good topics, but it *really* isn't
    what I'm looking for at a singles get-together. Just because I'm a
Christian doesn't mean I should spend my life alone... so I look
elsewhere and hope I get lucky in meeting a nice girl (I'm still waiting
for the "luck" to come my way 8^) ).

    Uh oh.......

Boinkability is oft mentioned though surely its in jest,
To join with one that truly fits try to give it a rest.
If it's Xena that you fancy and nothing else will do,
All else will be chancy until your search is through.
Tawny port may be a treat but is really pretty boring,
To a singles bar not bowling for a better chance at scoring.
Your faith is not a hinderance nor should it rightly be,
A plunge you'll need to take into the dating sea.
A 'vette may work for some guys lacking other charms and such,
In the gym you may find the women that are butch!
The supermart is a daily grind but people gotta eat,
The produce aisle some will say really can't be beat.
Dirty skivvies must be cleaned with extra special care,
Make sure their dark or skid marks might give the girls a scare.
Friends of friends of friends may be a source of dates,
Trying to put it together is rarely worth the wait.
Personal ads work for some though are they telling the truth?
You sit in a dark diner and observe from the last booth.
Lunch Dates and Together are outlets people try,
But usually its your wallet that only gets wrung dry.
So dating is a big fat pain and lonely hearts do ache,
To find a truthful woman, chances you must take.
