537.0. "question for motorists and non-motorists" by POLAR::WILSONC (A dog is a womans best man) Mon Sep 04 1995 01:43

Chris here to get all you avid motorists in a tizzy of sorts.

For an experiment I would like each and every one of you to listen to
yourself when refering to cars. ie. Do you say "here comes a car". If
and when you say this are you refering to just the car or the car and
driver? If you are refering to the car and the driver then why dont you
say "here comes a car being driven by a person".

Do you think that perhaps we too often forget that real living 'people'
are driving cars? Real living people that we all know, who are accident
prone, uncoordinated, easily distracted, sometimes compitent, etc.

So many times I find myself refering only to the car and not refering
to the person in command of the vehicle. More accurately I would say
that only when a vehicle/driver entity disturbs my space do I refer to
the human element of the duo, ie. "that a-hole just cut me off!" or
"that really nice person just made space for me."

How do you refer to the vehicle/driver enties in your area?

    Chris,

Just because you don't make enough money to afford a car doesn't mean
that you need to dump on people who have them.

Methinks you need professional help to get over this resentment.

Not only do I not make enough money to afford a car but my social
status (lowest of the low) allows me to dump on whoever I feel like
because my opinion isn't worth diddly squat. My inability to reach the
status quo through wage comparison pushes me to the margins where I
    feel tired, alone and free.

    Think about this carefully people:

What can one expect from people who need speed bumps?

re-.2 I think they put wheels on cars so that people wouldn't mistake
them for big steel reclining chairs. Unfortunately people dont seem to
have clued in and still believe that their car is just an extension of
their living room and the world just a big TV screen.

The world is our playground; we shall not want.

Enrichment classes during grades 6,7&8. Thats right I was deemed an
advanced student. So what does an advanced student who is growing up
during the beginings of the information age get taught? Math, math math
and more math. I did not have one spelling or grammer test (or lesson
for that matter) after grade 5.

So please point out every spelling and grammer mistake I make. It is
satisfying for me to see concrete evidence of the mismanagement of my
education which I have been at loose ends to try and repair myself.

Hey, Chris, I did those same classes, for grades 5 through 8. You
    can't expect school to teach you how to spell each and every word;
you have to learn how to spell (and how to write, for that matter)
by READING!! LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of reading.

On the subject of speed bumps...I can think of a few people in
this company who can be best described as `speed bumps'.
(I'm not referring to you, Chris. :^)

       "maybe"

Which actually makes the song more interesting, since it's
intended primarily as a coy tease in the first place.

It's not 'baby'? All this time I've been operating
under yet another little cloud of misconception...
things can be so ambiguous...

But you're right, 'maybe' lends a certain mystique
to the lyrics...

Reminds me of the time I had to correct my best pal's
interpretation of an old James Taylor ditty. I says to
her, I says, "Joanie, it's _not_ "you've got YOUR friend",
it's "you've got A friend"".

That's okay, I used to think that the line in "Will You Still Love
Me Tomorrow" that referred to "the magic of your sighs" was saying
    "the magic of your thighs".

    I liked my version better...

Oh, btw, I'll check my Beatles lyrics book; the line in question
could be "And maybe I'll love you", not "And maybe I love you".
Even more nitpicky, but it does make a semantic difference in
    those oh-so-critical moments.

Oh, good, thanks, I wanted to post the answer, but I'd forgotten
what inappropriate topic we were talking about this in, so thanks
    for the reminder here...

The line is (drum roll please): "And maybe I'll love you"

Note the "I'll", not "I". That (as well as the maybe/baby thing)
is an important nitpicky semantic difference for those of us, like
me, who continue to seek deep meaning in these songs, thirty years
    later. :-)
