519.0. "How do you cope with the Tube ??" by AQU027::SAXENA (does the universe exist?!) Tue Aug 15 1995 16:52

Is the human body really fit to cope with strains of the computer age.
There was a time when humans had to hunt, harvest or fight - all
physical functions. The body could be trained and made more physical.

Later on, perhaps human needed to be more mentally agile - no big deal.
The human brain could be trained.

My question is: Is a human body fit to cope with gazing at a 15" by 20"
light source focussed 30 inches from the eye 8 to 10 hours a day??

The tube seems to be invading every aspect of our life. First there is
the TV. A couple hours of that seems to be mandatory for most people
But it is not a must. You can give your TV away - which I did a year
    back. A radio is great!

But if your profession needs it, you have to be in front of the tube at
least 8 hours. And more and more professions are demanding that you sit
2 feet across from the tube the whole day.

If that was not enough, now there is the internet. Tonnes of garbage,
which you must wade through because it is there and is so easy to
    access.

My question is: Can the body really cope with the demands of the
computer age?? Gor god's sake you are bombarded with tonnes photons
every day from a 60 watt (or is it 100 ?) source just a couple feet
from the eye. I am sure the human body was not designed to deal with
things like cathode tubes. I already see lots of people wearing thick
glasses. What is in store for the kids down the road??

Does anyone else have similar concerns?? How do you deal with this
    issue??

    thanks.

o the Cuyahoga used to burn, it supports repetative salmon runs now
o Rocky River had sewage from Berea, fairly clean now
o the steel mills used to pollute big time, they are using scrubbers now.
o most of the steel mills are now closed anyway
o Lake Erie, one of the priemere Walleye destinations
o Akron used to be a dump, nice town now
o Columbus, Anhauser Busch, mostly steam from there
o Cincy - pretty clean now
o Dayton - air polution??? mostly planes from WPAFB

flat-panel displays AIN'T tubes, really... they's LCD technology.

    Shoot your television!

    (I would, but I don't have one.)
519.31RUSURE::GOODWINWed Aug 16 1995 13:2618
The way it works is this:

There are 3 kinds of electrons: red, blue, and green. When you buy a
TV, the picture tube is loaded right up with them, and they fire 'em at
the screen to make the nice colors. In years past there only used to
be two kinds of electrons: black and white. Then a man named Kodacolor
    discovered the others.

Anyhow, eventually the electrons get used up, and you have to get a
rebuilt tube or just buy a new set. When they rebuild a picture tube,
the cut the neck off, shake out all the used electrons (nowadays they
recycle them by pouring them back into a special electric outlet which,
being AC and very powerful, rejuvenates them within a few hours.

Then they fill the picture tube with fresh electrons and seal it back
up, and there you go. Where they get the fresh electrons is a deep
dark trade secret -- it's how they make their profit.

519.32Where they get the new colored electronsDRDAN::KALIKOWW3: Surf-it 2 Surfeit!Wed Aug 16 1995 13:293
I hear they make 'em in the same asian factories that used to make

Actually, the "tell that to the breweries" was more in reference to the
taste than the manufacturing processes, but the breweries for the
masses (at least in the UK) do use a lot of powdered additives like DME
    to make up the wort.
