316.0. "World population ?" by AKOCOA::DOUGAN () Mon Feb 27 1995 18:02

    Calvin & Hobbes on Sunday:

"..needless to say Frank's family was upset when he didn't come home
that night, but everybody understood that the human population had
doubled in just 2 generations to almost six billion, so some thinning
of the herds was necessary to prevent starvation."

Are we a cancerous growth on the face of the earth, or are we just
doing as we were told - multiplying and subduing?

Yes, we are a the top of the food webb. And like every population
where this happens thre population will go into exponential growth and
then crash, no plague, or pestilence but plenty of famine and death.

the top 10 the first season it was out. They said the critics hated the show,
saying it wouldn't last 6 weeks. 98 episodes, 3 movies, and the show that has
shown more reruns than any other show in the history of tv, I guess they might

Oh, no way. In fact, I'd say it's not even in the top five,
but I'd have to do some research to verify that.

Many highly-rated shows have been cancelled by the networks,
usually in the pre-cable days. Some for demographic reasons,
some because of bad producer-network relationships (e.g.,
"The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour"), some simply because the
other two shows on TV in the same time slot did much better,
some because the network wanted to get rid of "that kind" of
program (e.g., CBS's famous "rural purge" of 1970), some
because the show has just run out of steam and has nothing
more to say (e.g., "Gilligan's Island", where every possible
kind of plot in that restrictive environment had been done to
death countless times over), and I'm sure there are other
    reasons as well.

316.49Not so famous, actually, but interesting teevee historyAMN1::RALTOGala 10th Year ECAD SW AnniversaryThu Mar 02 1995 15:3313
Gerald's right... CBS decided that all of their rural-based shows
were hokey, cornpone, worn-out croakers with all of the wrong kinds
of people watching, weren't the way of the future, and all that.
In one fell swoop, they cancelled any series (even highly-rated
ones) that had so much as a whiff of cow patties.

Which set the stage for programs like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"
(1970), "All in the Family" (1971), M*A*S*H (1972), and so on.
One could say that the "rural purge" helped bring on the 1970's
"Golden Age of Sitcoms", one of the few good things to come from
    that decade, imho.

316.54How long did Gunsmoke last?DECLNE::REESEToreDown,I'mAlmostLevelW/theGroundThu Mar 02 1995 18:596
I think Denver said the network's prez was Paley and Gunsmoke was
Paley's wife's favorite program. Paley killed GI to clear one 1/2
hour that was needed for Gunsmoke. They didn't mention what other
show got hit to free the other 1/2 hour.

316.55Professor, can you perform a marriage ceremony?DECWIN::RALTOGala 10th Year ECAD SW AnniversaryThu Mar 02 1995 19:1512
Well, they could have just moved "GI" if it was all that popular.
Having read a lot about Paley and Stanton, it's a good bet that
they received too many barbs about the show from their cultural
pals, and just pitched the thing from sheer embarrassment. I'll
see if I can dig up anything else about this.

They were pretty much out of story lines as well. Programs such as
"GI" paint themselves into a corner... how many storylines can you
come up with for such a setting, before you start pairing off the
    characters? :-)

    re: TV research

As for the fate of "Gilligan's Island", while it is true that
"Gunsmoke" was moved from late Saturday night down into the time
slots of "Gilligan's Island" and "Run, Buddy, Run" (now *there*
was a true loss for humanity :-)) in the Fall 1967 schedule, it's
also true that there were plenty of other potential time slots
that "GI" could have been moved into if CBS had been so inclined.
And it's also true that CBS had indeed been so inclined during
"GI"'s three seasons, because it occupied a different day and time
slot for each of its three seasons, so it had already been moved
    around quite a bit.

I'd venture that CBS just wanted to nuke "GI", and told them the
"Gunsmoke" thing just to minimize the ruffled feathers, because
it's almost "honorable" to lose your time slot to the venerable
"Gunsmoke". In any event, one year later Bob Denver was back on
the CBS schedule in "The Good Guys" (also starring Herb Edelman,
aka Blanche's ex-husband in "The Golden Girls").

yes of all the "-ism's" heightism is the least publicised imho. and
unlike some -ism's, you can't do a lot about it if you're short. it's
pretty ingrained that the man of a couple should be taller than the
woman, and i do believe there is some correlation between promotion in
    business and height.

You should become a dental hygienist. That way you won't strain your neck
looking at tall men's teeth.
