254.0. "Communicators Wanted..." by SHRMAX::NEWTON () Tue Jan 17 1995 15:31

I am looking for a few people that are Excellent Communicators...ones that are
bright eager and intelligent. In my search I went looking in several Notes
Files, and you, the members of the SOAPBOX Community, won!

My sample counted notes written from 01-Jan-95 thru 08-Jan-95....you had almost
3000 notes/replies....beating the nearest runner up by a couple of thousand or
so!....BUT...Quantity alone does not a communicator make....I require QUALITY!!

And QUALITY you have!....Why the Personal Names alone set you apart from the
rest of the herd...to say nothing of some of your 'topics'...I am wearing a
well worn green flannel shirt, gray corduroys, gray wool socks and no shoes..but
I digress....

Now for the "Details":

o You MUST live in the Eastern Mass/Southern NH/RI Area.
o You Must have your own transportation.
o You must have a couple of hours a month to have fun...
[Fun being defined as going for walks, losing at Backgammon, going
shopping, cleaning the refrigerator, going out for dinner or just some
talking about the worlds events (just like you 'boxers!).]

I have a friend that is looking for (No, I am not running a dating service)
people to enjoy some of the above type activities. She is a professional
programmer/software engineer who worked for Digital during the mid 70's working
on a variety of projects in BLISS, COBOL and a few other languages (Yes, BLISS
& COBOL in the same person!)...and is currently working for Harvard doing
medical data reduction or something like that. She is a telecommuter...mainly
because the State of Massachusetts will not give her a drivers license...a
position I must agree with, since she is blind and deaf...however when we are in
the car she often tells me where to go..(I mean she gives me directions)...
as long as we are inside 128.

Ok...now let me answer a few of the questions that may be going thru your mind..
I talk with her via Internet Mail for general chat frequently, and if we need
to talk over the phone I leave her a voicemail and she calls me back thru the
TDD relay operator (her PC/modem to NYNEX PC/modem with operator who then calls
me and I talk and they type and the NYNEX operator talks etc...) and then when
I visit her at her apartment she talks to me and I reply with 'finger spelling'
...a simple process for me...she places her left hand on the back of my right
hand and I spell my reply by placing my hand in different shapes to form letters
of the alphabet...it is easy to learn and I always carry my 'cheat sheet' which
I can refer to. Now this process has some drawbacks...you have to know how to
spell which has caused me a problem or two...but she is a pretty good guesser!
Now if I have a lot to say, we go into her office where I sit down at the
keyboard and she reads my typing on her electronic braille device (40 characters
at a time).

Now all you have to do is send your usual flurry of replies and I will answer
them as best I can....and those I can't answer I will forward to her and then
I will post her reply...

Give me you thoughts.....

Thanks,
George Newton...a long time DECie...you can also reach me at
my office DTN::237-3480 or send mail to my MPGS:: account...

George, It's nice to see someone being able to conquer their
disabilities in such a possative manner! She sounds like a
wonderful person. Where does she live?

I'm married with two kids, a hectic job, and not much time to myself,
but I'd love to chat with this woman via e-mail. She sound like a very
exciting individual to get to know.

She is looking meet more people...being a telecommuter and not being
able to go out alone limits her ablity to meet new friends...so this
note may be able to help with the introductions. If you are interested
in meeting her or talking with her thru Internet mail drop me a note or
    give me a call...

    Thanks,
    George

Why must these internet friends live in New England? Distance
should be a moot point when the internet is involved!

I believe the lady in .0 is also looking for human contact, someone to go to
dinner with, or to go grocery/clothes shopping. Friendship is the motivation
I believe.
