My picks for Superbowl this year...

San Francisco and Pitt...with the final score being Pitt 24, SF 21.

Pitt has one of the few defensive teams that can harass Young, and will
upset SF by reducing their passing yardage, and making them run the
    ball more.

I know, I know...I'm going against the grain on this one. 8^)

Who I'd really like to see is Dallas and Pitt...but without E. Smith,
Dallas really doesn't have much of a running game, which will kill them
when they play SF (Deion will get an interception or two, I predict).

I'll be rootin' for Dallas, also, which will seal their doom.

Yeah, I think your right about a onesided game for most of it. 92-94
the Bills got trashed. 91 was a great superbowl. 86 the Patsies got creamed,
which set a record for worst defeat, until Denver came along and got destroyed
by Washington and I believe the 49ers. But there are still 2 superbowls that I
can't remember. I wish I had a reason to not remember, but I don't.... :-)

| Pitt has one of the few defensive teams that can harass Young,

I really want to see Woodson against Rice. I think THAT would be a
great matchup.

| and will upset SF by reducing their passing yardage, and making them run the
| ball more.

You seem to forget that they run the ball very well to begin with. You
force Young out of the pocket and he could very well end up with a 100 yard day
rushing. I think the 49ers will win it if they make it.

| I know, I know...I'm going against the grain on this one. 8^)

	Gee.... that's a first... :-)

| Who I'd really like to see is Dallas and Pitt...but without E. Smith,
| Dallas really doesn't have much of a running game, which will kill them
| when they play SF (Deion will get an interception or two, I predict).

They have Blair Thomas!!! You know, the guy the Patriots cut because he
couldn't run. He did a great job last weekend. Having a good run oriented
offensive line really helps.

around and get each section going. Of course the drool may interfere with

With the incredible amount of rain, the field will be a real mess (even
if it is covered, IMO.) Could the rain cause a dangerous situation
around the park such that the NFL may have to consider moving the
venue of the SF-Dallas game? Not being familiar with the area around

Jim must have never parked in the outer lots. They could lose busloads
of people in the mud. Superbowl is supposed to be here in 1998 and
they've promised to pave the outer lots by then, but it hasn't happened
yet. And they want you to pay $15 nowadays to go park in that mess!

Seriously, the state of the field is Officially Unknown. The rain got
to it briefly last Friday because the forecast the head groundskeeper
heard said nothing before 10am, so when the rain started at 6am Friday
they were caught short. But they hustled and got it covered by 7:30,
and the game Saturday was ok. And its been covered since. And it'll
stay covered because the rains aren't done yet! Until game day, nobody
really knows what state it'll be in.

I figured SF was going to win by 2 TDs. It was actually a better game
than I thought, after the cowboys dug themselves a huge hole. With a
healthy Emmitt and no giveaways in their own end, it would have been
    anybody's game.

The interference non-call where Irvin was clearly held in the 4th
quarter decided the game. Oh, well. I still think the two best teams in
the league played yesterday. SF will win by 30.

It's likely to be another superbowl blowout, unfortunately.

You're right, the no-call on an obvious hold by Sanders was key.
Another key was the horrid time management at end of the half by
Dallas. What were they thinking? Had they gone into the second half
only down 10 (after a terrible trouncing in the first quarter), it may
have been a different ball game.

Dallas simply made too many mistakes to win. If they hadn't made all
these (non-championship team) mistakes, they would have won, even
without a healthy Emmit, IMO. Oh well.

A less than exciting superbowl in two weeks. I only hope that just as
they surprised Pitt, SD can surprise SF and at least make a game out of
    it.

There's plenty of blame to go around:

The players for giving SF a 21 point head start in the first 5 minutes of the
game, the kicker for missing the 12 yard fg.

The coaching staff for not using Harper even if he was being covered by Deon
Sanders, for not running out the clock at the end of the half, allowing SF to
get another TD in the closing seconds, and keeping the injured right tackle
(adams?) in when it was obvious the mud and injury made him ineffective.

The officials for blowing the interference call on Deon Sanders, which would
have made it a 3 point game, and quite possibly a different outcome.

The owner (jones) and front office staff for letting Ken Norton go to SF.

The owner for having too big of an ego to let Johnson coach the team. I doubt
he would have made the coaching errors Switzer did.

All-in-all, I'll take a 100% healthy Cowboys over a 100% healthy 49'ers any
day.

As Switzer said in a pre-game interview, the team that makes the fewest
mistakes would win. The 49'ers made the fewest errors. The only good thing
about this game is that Young may be able to finally shake the Montana monkey
off his back.

Agreed, although the refs don't have the benefits of instant
replay, nor of a camera dedicated to most of the key players.

The ref sees what the ref see, and the call is based accordingly.

Often the guy that started it doesn't even get penalized. The
ref only sees the retaliatory blow and penalizes for that.

Then the "instant replay rule" should be re-instated, as some of the

238.143NETRIX::thomasThe Code WarriorMon Jan 16 1995 20:309
I'd prefer the see the instant replay be re-instated but modified. You get
up to 2 instant replays per half and you get to choose when they happen.
If used within the 2 minute warning, they also comsume a timeout (ie. so
you can't use one to get a "free" timeout). If you have no timeouts and you
are inside the 2 minute warning, your instant replays are void. If you elect
not to use them then the disappear at the end of the half.

For each overtime period you get one extra replay (which must be consumed
during that overtime period).

RE: 238.143

I don't think taking a replay call during the 2-minute warning should
count as a time-out. They use the clock so they can get the 2-minute
warning as a time-out anyway, why should they be penalized if they ask
for a replay on a play that happens to be the last one before the warning?

The officials should also have the ability to call for a replay if they
can't agree on a call. And they shouldn't be afraid to use replays like
that, it would make things fairer.

If a player is injured, it will cost the team a timeout if inside the 2 minute

I think Joe has it right. If within the last 2 minutes they want an
instant replay, and it clearly shows that the play should stand, the other team
should get penalized. Maybe even throw in loss of a down. That would help
things out and prevent teams from using this as a timeout. Of course if it
comes back inconclusive, then just charge them a time out.

Glen
238.157CSC32::J_OPPELTWhatever happened to ADDATA?Tue Jan 17 1995 16:504
Actually I think that any request for instant replay that does
not come out in your favor should result in a penalty. Kind of
like being forced to pay for the court costs of someone against
whom you file suit and lose.
238.158BIGQ::SILVASquirrels R MeTue Jan 17 1995 17:439

Only if it CLEARLY shows if it is not in your favor. Sometimes even the
camera can't pick up what happened. Like someone's head is in the way, a body
part... although they always seem to get those leg breaks on the camera.

	The "Star Spangled Banner"

Written by Francis Scott Key, while a "guest" of British forces on
the Patapsco River during the aerial bombardment of Fort McHenry,
13-14 September 1814. Distributed in handbill form on 15 September.

O say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say does that star spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
	As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses;
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream.
'Tis the star spangled banner, O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country shall leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave,
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave.
And the star spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever, when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto, "In God is our trust."
And the star spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

RE: 238.159

Singing the American National Anthem as it was originally written
probably isn't what you really have in mind. The music was originally
known as "To Anacreon in Heaven," and it had different words. It was a
drinking song.

re .161

I'm not sure whether you are being pedantic or I am, but I must point
out that the ANTHEM was originally written to be sung to the tune
"Anacreon in Heaven" but with Key's words, not the words of the drinking
song.

/john
238.163COVERT::COVERTJohn R. CovertWed Jan 18 1995 12:3518
Oh, and I must _further_ point out that though the tune has been first
located c. 1775 as the song of the Anacreontic Society in London, an
organization of wealthy men and musicians who occasionally met for
concerts, drinking, and singing, no composer is mentioned (an oddity
for a musical society) which makes it much more probable that the
tune had a prior existence, possibly a military one, since it has
many characteristics of a trumpet march of the period.

The first use of the tune in the United States would be in a parody
of "The genius of France from his star begem'd throne" published in
New York papers in 1793. At least 100 patriotic parodies which
predate Key's use of the tune for the "Star Spangled Banner" have
survived, including one used by Key himself at a dinner in honor of
Stephen Decatur in December 1805 in Georgetown, D.C.

So there.

The difficulty in singing the national anthem is not the range, but the
intervals. It is very difficult to sing in pitch. It gets butchered all
the time, even by so-called professional singers. I know the likelihood
of cringing is *extremely* high when the anthem is sung, so I usually
hit the mute button... If I'm at a Celtics game, it makes a good time
    to visit the men's room.

Is the FOX network going to air another "special" during the halftime
of this year's game?

I feel sorry for sponsors who have commercials airing during the second
half. The 49ers will have the game wrapped up (and beat the spread) by
the end of the first half. Elvis will play sometime in the third quarter.

(that's Elvis Grbac, the 2nd string QB for SF).

Should be as dull as the last three superbowls, so maybe the halftime

I figured Kathie Lee would do a credible job on the anthem. Let's
face it folks, it could have been a LOT worse. Can you imagine some
rapper such as Snoop Doggy Dog or Queen Latifa doing their "inter-
    pretations" of the anthem?

The folks that put these events together are only interested in TV
ratings and attendance at the stadium. The game *should* be the
main attraction, but the last 10 years or so the promoters seem to
think they have to get a showbiz "name" to do the anthem; as a result
    the anthem usually gets mangled.

I couldn't believe believe what I was hearing when it was sung at a
hockey game recently. There wasn't one Hispanic person sitting near
me (probably weren't many, if any at the game), but everyone around
me started out "jose can you see" <--- I KNOW this used to be a joke,

Sponsors pay millions and millions for their little commercial spots

ad campaigns which show up during the Superbowl are better than the

It's the one time of the year when many make a point of watching the
