855.4Hints About Using RD FieldsORION::suemac.zko.dec.com::laquerreProgrammed by fellas with compassion and visionFri Jan 24 1997 12:1419
Hi:

I'm not really clear on the nature of your problem, but the error
you're getting in .3 is most likely happening because Word can't
find the files referenced in the RD field. Are the files you're
referencing stored in the "D:\CHAPTER" directory?

If they are, try using two backslashes in the path, as in:

    RD D:\\CHAPTER\\CHAPTER_1.DOC

For what it's worth, I usually don't use path names in the RD fields.
Instead, I only reference the file name (RD filename.DOC). Then, I
make sure I open a document from that directory before compiling my
TOC and INDEX. Opening a document from that directory sets that
directory as the default directory for Word.

I had similar problem with table of content using WORD6 template in WORD7. The problem is in
different TOC field format in WORD7.
WORD6 used as a separator comma and in WORD7 the semicolon is used.

WORD6 example:

{TOC \s chapter\t "Head1,1,Head2,2,Head3,3"\d-}

WORD7 correct format:

{TOC \s chapter\t "Head1;1;Head2;2;Head3;3"\d-}

I hope this will help.

855.6Commas work fine for me...ORION::suemac.zko.dec.com::laquerreProgrammed by fellas with compassion and visionMon Jan 27 1997 15:575
Just for the record, I'm using commas in the TOC field and it works
fine in Word 7.0a.

855.7A bug in WORD 7.0aOHFSS1::RBROWNHope = Deferred RealityMon Jan 27 1997 16:478
    I found the problem - WORD 7.0a has a problem.  I finally called M/S
    and told them that after 1 1/2 weeks of fighting with this, I was
    tired. Sooo, we discussed it and whammm .... they couldn't make it
    work either. In their data base the specialist found a note that said
    this was a problem in the conversion from WORD 6 to WORD 7. You had to
    have the exact working, or it fails. The fix is to REMOVE the STYLE,
    REAPPLY the STYLE, CHECK YOUR DOCUMENT to make sure it is OK. It will
    work after this.

From your replies I still don't understand exactly what your problem was and
how you solved it. Sorry. I'd just like to be sure we understand if it is
a problem with moving from Word 6.0 to Word 7.0.

It sounds like you were using the "Classic" Table of Contents format, which
is one of the defaull TOC formats listed in the Indexes and TOC dialog box.
When you converted your document from Word Version 6.0 to 7.0a, you lost
some of the heads in your TOC.

To fix the problem, you removed the TOC and re-inserted it? I guess I got
confused because you use the word "Style," which, of course has other
meanings within Word.

As an aside for SES Word users, if you're using a template such as the
SES.DOT or DEC_V6.DOT template, you should always use the "Custom" TOC format
(in Word V6.0) or the "From Template" format (in Word V7.0) when you're
messing around in the Indexes and Tables dialog box.
