42.0. "Ratt" by USHS08::DAVIS2 (Reality? Just say NO.) Wed May 18 1988 21:04

RATT. The best of metal, the best of music.

Robbin Crosby lays down serious riffs in every song.

Stephen Pearcy's voice is always right on the money.

Warren De Martini, also a serious riff runner.

Juan Croucier on bass... you never really notice he's
there, but he never misses a beat.

And Blotz on the drums rounds it out.

I have only two complaints about the band. They don't put
out enough albums, and their tour never seems to make it where
    	I am.

        RE: wjb

I disagree about 'Invasion ...' being bad, but can't
say anything about 'Dance ...' because I don't have
it nor have I ever heard it.

"You're in Love" has gotta be the best song they've
ever done. I love the riff, the drums, and just the
                 way it sounds overall.

Although I admit that 'Out of the Cellar' blows away
anything else they've ever done - and will probably
                 never be equalled (by them).

                                                       Shawn L.

42.3Three out of four ain't badUSHS08::DAVIS2Reality? Just say NO.Wed May 18 1988 23:0420

Well, if you want to talk about biased, I have to say
I like everything on all their albums. Of the four I have,
I'd have to say the weakest effort was Invasion, though
I really love "You're In Love' and 'Lay It Down'. The
rest of the album is generally good, but the songs all
sound very similar after a while.

Out of the Cellar blows me away every time. I just got
RATT - RATT today (apparently an EP... only 5 songs, all good).
Dancing Undercover gets me moving, playing an air guitar,
despite the fact that I know almost nothing about playing
a guitar (or any instrument for that matter).

As I said, I have not yet seen them live, so I'm disappointed
to hear that Pearcy can't hold his voice... It figures, though.
It's rare that you find a group that makes good albums AND does
    	great road shows. Pity.

    	- Greg
42.4More RATT in my brain please...29784::COSTAWed May 18 1988 23:166

I'm a definite RATT fan. Love driving to just about all of their
songs. Particularly like Between The Eyes and of course Lay It Down.
Steven Pearcy has a great act going for him and the band, but where in
    the heck are they?
42.5Chalk one up for them!5394::GALLANTAn angel's face, a devil's grin...Thu May 19 1988 11:4718

Another RATT fan. I like all their stuff, but I think Invasion
is best. And that's probably because it's the one I have had the
    most exposure to.

Let's get together and give this band a boost, eh?! They put out
albums, yet they get nowhere! It's a shame.

I can remember when Poison was opening for them and when I told
everyone I wanted to go see them (I never DID get to go).

"Why do you want to go see Ratt Poison?" "Sounds pretty gross to
     me!" Geez....get with it, Ma.....

    I like Ratt alot !

    They kickass.

About that first EP ? I don't think the sound engineer was on the
ball, but I love Sweet Cheetah...

Invasion might not be the best, but it's got the best cover; Marianne
Garvant (1982 Playmate of the Year).

    Warren kicks ass...

I also like RATT at lot, but only on album. I saw them live at
an outdoor show (Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister, Ratt, and Lita Ford!).
I was very disappointed with them. Agreed that they had a lousy
aound mix, and that doesn't help. But except for the "hit" singles,
a lot of their material didn't stand up to listening for an hour
long set. But this was early in their career, so they may have gotten
    better...

I say Ratt in August 1981 in a small club in LA. I was on
my honeymoon. Can you think of a better way to spend your honeymoon
then listening to hard music. My cousin was a great fan of this
garage band at the time. I'm not sure if Jake E Lee was on guitar
or not. Anyway they played a lot of cover tunes by UFO and Aerosmith.
I can't remember any originals. Pearcy was in love with himself.
I remember thinking that they weren't any better than my band at
the time. If it was Jake E Lee playing guitar he sure came a long
way in a short time because I thought I could play as well as him
then but he sure could blow me away now. I like quite a few of their
tunes especially Lay it down and you're in love. I think Dance sounds
    too much the same.

Hopefully they will have some killer tunes for the next LP, 'cause
IMO "Dancin' Undercover" was a great title but a poor album. "Out
Of The Cellar" spoiled me as far as RATT goes - it WAS a killer.

Their latest attempts disappointed me, too. It didn't
seem to have the rough edge to it. Some of the songs
are alright (Slip of the Lip, Dance) but they all seem
to be on a very love/lust/gotta_have_you level.

There's nothing wrong with a band having songs, but on
this particular album there's hardly a song WITHOUT it.

    	Gets tiresome fast, IMO.

The other night, being in the mood to read some metal gossip, I
purchased the latest copy of Hit Parader (*gag*). There is an
    interview with Stephen Pearcy.

The bottom line is that Ratt is back in the Ratt 'n' Roll market again.
They have released a new album called "Reach For The Sky". The
article quotes SP as saying that the album is a cross between "Out
Of The Cellar" and "Invasion Of Your Privacy". If thats really
the case, I'm fixin' to head out to my favorite CD store and make
    a purchase.

Anybody have any input on this ? If not, I'll be back.

Yo Pete, I know they're not Heavy Metal but Journey does/did
a song "Chain Reaction" long before Ratt, and if anything the
way they do it, it'll be the closet thing that Journey does
to Heavy Metal. They've also got a video out of it, actually
it's not a bad song if you like Journey. I think there's a few
other bands that have the same song title but I can't think

Just heard "Way Cool Jr." over the weekend - I think this is, by far, the
best song Ratt has done so far! I was *very* impressed!!!

I thought it showed some musical ingenuity and originality that is so
lacking in these sound-alike bands. The writing is getting tighter, and
the band sounds better than ever before. Anybody else heard the little
blues lick thrown in right at the end of the solo? I love sh*t like that!

Now I just have to pick up the album, and hope the rest is as good....

I really can't understand what it is you guys think is missing
from the new RATT. I own all their albums and I don't think
that their older stuff was any harder or better than their
newest album. As a matter of fact, I like their newest effort the
best. I think the music's a lot better, I think the lyrics aren't
as non-sensical as the other albums, I think the songs have better
hooks, and I especially like the songs Chain Reaction, Way Cool
Jr., and What's it Gonna Be.
I could be missing something, but I don't think that this
band has messed with their style. You can't take a band like
RATT TOO seriously, but their music used to be a lot of fun, and
    I think it still is.

42.82I was real disappointed...sound was blech!RUTLND::ARABIANMon Apr 10 1989 17:5044
I went to the Ratt show on Saturday night, and ended up being *real*
disappointed.....

First off, let me say that they did a lot of things right:

o They didn't 'suck up' to the crowd like most HM bands ("We love you,
Worcester!" or "Worcester, you guys are the loudest crowd on the tour!")

o They had a nice stage set, which was neat yet functional. Multi-tiered,
with a bunch of ramps and risers on the side.

o Real nice light show, without being flashy. Good use of Vari-lights.

o Interesting drum solo. He had a lot of sampled sounds and voices plugged
into drum pads, and it was pretty cool. Much better than your average
  boring solo.

o Despite warnings that they were boring, the stage show was pretty
  entertaining.

o Nice way to arrange the set list. They would usually run 2 or 3 songs
together, without any stops. Made for a nice cohesive set. (Especially
good was "Lay It Down" into "You're In Love".)

So what was the problem, you ask?

They sounded AWFUL!!!! Just TERRIBLE!!!!

This had nothing to do with the muscial performance, which may have been OK.
But I couldn't hear much of anything except this sorta mid-range blur. The
drums, guitars, and vocals all were muddled together. Nothing was clear,
not even the solos. If you didn't know the songs, it would have been tough
to tell what it was!

I was really disappointed, and even had to leave before it was over. I kept
waiting for it to get better, and it never did. The final blow was during
"Way Cool Junior" (last song of the set), when it sounded just as bad as the
rest of the set. I was outta there!

In this day and age, there is no excuse for a bad sound like they had. Either
they didn't want to pay for good sound equipment, or they are too cheap to
hire a soundman who knows what he's doing. I dunno, but it s*cked!!!

I had the unfortunate task of setting up the stage and let me
tell ya that i have seen alot better stage equip than what they
had. While talking with all the "roadies" that i work with they
said that this tour was a terrible one and that the Centrum crowd
was probably their biggest yet ( the Centrum was half filled ).
They have until July 1 with this tour and they wish it was over
already. As for the sound , the explanation was " if they can't
play their music they turn it up as loud as possible and the crowd
will go nuts just because it's loud". I asked one guy earlier if
it was a loud show, his reply, " it won't be loud as long as you
have two sets of earplugs". I thought the best part of the show
was the drum solo. It was really that good.... other than that
i believe Cinderella will put on a better show at the end of the
    month.

late April and I must say, I have never been so disappointed in
my entire life. Their sound was TERRIBLE. You couldn't understand
what song they were playing until it was almost over. There was
only one highlight, and that was when Warren did a guitar solo during
"Lay it Down". He really has some talent as a musician; I wonder
what he is doing hanging around the other four guys. I am so tired

Well, I think that the girls are expected to be looking at the band members.
"Way Cool Junior" was half pretty women, and half live shots of the band.

It may have been a cool video, but it was also a great song, which is a hell

In my opinion, DiMartini has boring and old rythyms. They're
power chords in the same progression as I've heard a zillion times.
But don't get me wrong, I like Ratt and Warren. Nuno has very exiting
rythyms (Ever heard Suzi,Pornograffitti,It, or Teacher's Pet to name a
few). Nuno having a good sound??? He has an intense sound. Crunchy
like a new bag of Doritos, yet meaty like a five pound steak. And yes
he is fast but he is also soooooo clean. And his phrasing in his solos is
so good it inspires me to no end. Ever solo says something different
than the last. Now of course this is all my opinion, and people will
    always beg to differ. (^:

IMHO, Nuno is a premier guitarist. While Extreme is a little "popish"
for my tastes, I listen to it because of Nuno and the rest of the boize.
The lyrics are what make me get tired of it, but the music is balls-on.

Now I like Ratts old stuff a LOT. I worshipped DryMartini(tm) when Out Of The
Cellar came about. I'm like "man, this guy is clean and quick and meaty".
Now doubt about it; DryMartini(tm) is an excellent guitarist...

BUT...

Several years later all his lix sound the same, his chops are sloppy...
Everything is a damn cliche' of OOTC or some other pop band.

WHY ?

Cuz he's trying to keep up with the likes of Nuno, Vai, Satch and Beach.
It'll never happen. He had his chance and blew his wad of OOTC.

Nuno *IS* at the top of the heap right now. Next week ? Who knows.

Anyways, back to the topic, I have to agree with Coop 100%. Ratt had
there day They were the ballz their first two albums, third was ok.
But, now their lame. I'll probably see them just because their Ratt
and I worshiped them years ago. But, really their new tune is SO
unoriginal. Extreme's lyrics maybe cliche but, at least their album
is rocking and it doesn't put you to sleep unlike Ratt. Hopefully
Extreme will experiment with their lyrics in the future.

Ratt has a new compilation out, called 'Ratt and Roll - 8191'.

Song listing:
Tell The World
You Think You're Tough
Round and Round
Wanted Man
Back For More
Lack Of Communication
Lay It Down
You're In Love
Slip Of The Lip
Dance
Body Talk
Way Cool Jr.
I Want A Woman
Lovin' You's A Dirty Job
Shame Shame Shame
Givin' Yourself Away
One Step Away
Heads I Win, Tails You Lose
Nobody Rides For Free

Prtty cool to have all their best songs on one CD. I wouldn't want to own
all of the individual albums on disk, but this is a great compilation to

Ya know, I heard a "Ratt triple play" (bleck!) on this cool NJ radio

singer really suck!" If you LISTEN to Steven Pearcy's vocals, he CAN'T

Have you heard the new Arcade? It's great, still think he has great

leave the band, example, new Crue, it SUCKS without Vince Neil.
They may not be the best singers but if it wasn't for them, Ratt
