641.0. "Bonham" by LANDO::QUEBEC (WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! 8^)) Fri Aug 25 1989 17:23

I'll make a musical contribution for a change!

Yesterday afternoon cruising to Hampton WAAF had Jason Bonhem (SP?)
on with John Smith(something) from the new band Bonhem. They
played a single off their album. It was pretty good. A little
Zepplin sounding but it was good.

Did anyone else here it and have an opinion??

    was cool.

    The production has really happening.

Checked out the Vidio last night, and loved it!

Definately Zep sounding but I was pleased. Jason sounding very like
      his late father on drums.

      Definately picking up the LP...

I didn't particularly care for their new song, either. It's
alright but I think they sound TOO much like Led Zep.

What gets me is that Jason put DOWN Kingdom Come for sounding
so much like Led Zep and then he goes and does the same thing.
Dad or no Dad - get some originality!

I heard over the weekend that the boys from LED ZEP got back or
is getting back to do an album with Jason on drums. Seems that Page
and Plant are gonna try and stick it out for a year and a half.

I saw an interview with Jason Bonham on MTV a few weeks before the
album was released, and he said it *would* sond a lot like Zep because
he grew up with Zep and that *was* his major influence in music.
He compared it to Julian Lennon's dilema of sounding like John ...
Makes sense to me ... so give the Zep-Clone thing a break will ya?

    				Scary
641.18I'm not normally like this...BUFFER::GOLDSMITHDo as I do, not as I sayMon Oct 02 1989 17:2318
No! I refuse. I don't care who is influence was. He didn't have to
get a Robert Plant wanna-be to sing. There's a thousand people in LA
and England (or wherever he's hanging out) who can sing ten times
better than that guy. Drums are one thing, but the music and vocals
    are something else. It's ridiculous.

The other thing that irks me is that I saw an MTV special on the band.
First of all, why do they get a special? Because it's John Bonhams
son. There are a hundred bands who would deserve a special before
them. Second, Robert Plant was on it defending their sound. Only
because he's John Bonham's son. If Plant is going to roust on Kingdom
Clone, then he should do the same with other sound-alikes.
The third thing is that Jason Bonham is the ugliest dude I've seen in a
a long time. He's a dork too. The interviews were lame.

So, no, I won't give this thing a break.

And what's wrong with a Zep sound alike?

I agree the vocalist is a Plant clone, but what's wrong with that?
In fact, I like the way Bonham is putting the drums out front again. What
ever happened to heavy rock and roll drums? The last real heavy metal
drums were from Eddie's brother Alex, and he doesn't do that anymore.

I say let them copy the sound and bring back what could've been the
Zeppelin of the 90's. If it bothers you, just turn it off and let us
*real* Zep fans get a little reminder of the past... :^)

    Long live Led Zeppelin!!!

At least Jason admitts that ZEP is influance, BUT KINGDOM *&^&^
they have never sat down to listen to a ZEP ALBUM, which i might
believe, Jason grew up in it, his father was 25% of the band
so if thats the music he wants to play, good for him, i like the
album i'll listen to it! you don't have to! and what does his looks
have to do with his playing ability?

I'm of the opinion that if it sounds good, I like it, even
if it's a blatant rip-off, or doesn't break any new ground.
    Fine.
Bulletboys sound just like old VH. I love old VH, I like Bulletboys.
I can't think of how many bands I've heard sound just like AC/DC,
but I love AC/DC and I like these bands.
Bonham sounds JUST like LED ZEP, I love zep so I like the Bonham
stuff I've heard, and he seems to be a pretty good drummer, even
if he is fat and stupid! ;^)

Anyway, the Bonham single is leaps and bounds better than
"Get it On" or whatever it was called by Kingdom Come.

/Motorbreath...honestly thought it was Robert Plant's new single,
and liked it, so I had to be honest about Bonham.
641.24FineBUFFER::GOLDSMITHDo as I do, not as I sayWed Oct 04 1989 15:117
Alright, that's fine. If you want to do that. Fine. My point, and
that of others here is that people like you are supporting these people
who come out and just dredge up old material in a new song, and get
famous. Jason Bonham is no better a drummer than anyone else. He
copies his dad. If I wanted to do that, I could do that. I don't want
to. What's to be said for originality? The only reason that this lame
upstart is making money, is because of his name.

I thought the single was Plant's, too. But I like it anyway.

    I think the "he_wouldn't_be_anybody_if_it_was_not_for_his_dad"
statement is true, but such is life.

Obviously, if he has any talent then he will have longevity, there
are thousands of one_hit_and_nowhere musical acts... Time will tell
    if he is another.

A band has its WHOLE life to make its first album, then about six
months to come up with its second. And many don't have the talent
or ability. (Boston, Kingdom Clone, etc..)

Just heard on mtv that Friday will have Jason on the Hard 30. They
also mentioned that the whole half hour will be dedicated to him.
    Who is this guy????????????????????????????????
I could think of a thousand other drummers to spend the time on.
Well since he is Johns son let give him everything. Next thing
you know he will be doing an oldsmobile commerical

641.32Sounds "ok" to Me!DPDMAI::ANDERSONSWed Nov 15 1989 13:5015
I saw the Hard 30 interview with JB and I was intrigued by the fact
that Page and Plant were saying GOOD things about him. They were
playing a home movie that was title LED ZEPPLIN REUNION practice
session. They were playing Cashmire sp? and it sounded way lame.

I think the singer sounds sooooo much like plant. I figured Jimmy would
say something about it. Maybe they figure they will make so much money
on a reunion tour that it just wont' matter!

Anyway I kinda like the songs on the Album, they sound exactly like old
Zep. I grew up on Zep and have seen them twice in concert, I miss them and
I guess that Bonham is just the next best thing for me.

First, I heard that he had one guy playing one hand for him while he

Then, I heard he bought an Octapad and was playing the hi-hats and ride

Worcester Telegram & Gazette, The full article was published
Thursday, March 20, 1997, written by Scott McLennan.

Here's some excerpts from the article...

Bonham acknowledges that what he is doing is not politically correct.
"But we've seen this go from 10 shows, to 20, to 30, to 70", he noted
during a phone interview from a tour stop in Chicago.

Bonham was first seen pubicly playing drums as a toddler in the
Zeppelin movie "The Song Remains the Same". He was then invited to
take his father's role when the surviving members of Led Zeppelin
reunited in 1988 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Atlantic Records.

The Jason Bonham Band debuted shortly after that (with the band leader
making a detour through Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page's solo band) and
landed a radio hit off the album "Disregard for TimeKeeping" in 1990
    with "Wait for You".

Bonham said his classic rock style was buried by the alternative rock
invasion of the early 90's, but he feels the waters are safe for his
return. The band will release a second album of original material in
    July for Epic Records.

The Zep Set grew out of a concert segment the Jason Bonham Band had
used before when it played a medley of Zeppelin classics.

"I had heard too many bad Led Zeppelin tributes. That's what got me
    started on that," he said.

Guitarist Tony Catania takes some liberties in the way he jams on
songs, not making note for note stabs at what Page did. Singer
Charles West meanwhile is a ringer for vocalist Robert Plant. His
work on "In the Evening" and "Since I've Been Loving You" is uncanny
on the album, which was recorded at Electric Ladyland Studios in front
of an audience. Bass and keyboard player John Smithson is the sole
holdover from the original Bonham band lineup.

Profits from "In the Name of My Father" and the Zep Set shows are
going to charities such as Big Sisters and The John Bonham Memorial
Motorcycle Camp in Los Angeles. There is also talk of starting a John
Bonham Memorial Fund to help pay college tuitions.

"That's something my father would do, he was very generous," Bonham
said. "Besides, it's not my music, it's my dad's. I'm happy to play it,
but I don't want to make my living off it."
