39.0. "Led Zeppelin" by ROCKON::RADLER () Wed May 18 1988 14:35

Did anyone get a chance to see the Led Zepplin reunion
on HBO the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary?

The lineup consisted of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page , John
Paul Jones and Jason Bonham (John's son). I was really impressed
with Jason Bonham. He played alot like his father and was really
quite a good drummer. He lacked a little of the power of his dad
and couldn't quite fill his legendary Dads shoes but he came as
close as could be expected. Plants voice was better than I expected
but he has lost some of his range. John Paul was as steady as usual
but the biggest disappointment was Jimmy Page. I always thought
Jimmy was a little sloppy but he certainly hasn't improved much.
It seems like he hasn't been keeping up with the electric side of
the guitar world. He has written some great tunes and played some
classic riffs but he's not what he used to be.

The song selections included 1)Kashmir (which seemed Pages
guitar was a little out of tune, the phase shifting effects on the
drums sounded nice though) 2)Heartbreaker (which Page seemed
to gag during the attempted lead, into 3)Whole lotta Love (this came
off pretty well, also some nice echo on the vocals) 4)Misty Mountain
Hop (The best played song of the set) 5)Stairway to Heaven (Not
a bad version though Pages solo was just okay).

It was nice to see a reunion and was a real nice finishing
    touch to the Atlantic party.

Paul, That just about sums it up. Page was terrible and I agree
Jason and J.P.Jones were the best. Plant wasn't that bad. He was
awful at Live Aid. Page stunk up both places.

It's funny. I tried watching that show, being a long
time Zep fan, but found I could not endure it. I found
the channel 8 auction (our local PBS station scrounging
for money) to be more entertaining. I missed the Zep
performance altogether, and now that I hear the comments
I'm glad I did. I'd hate to see Paige 'after the fall'
    	as it were.

Incidentally, did anyone know he wrote the soundtrack
for Death Wish III... shows how low he really has gone.

It wasn't as bad as it seems. True, Page kind of screw things
up but mostly during lead breaks. If you put the thing in perspective
it was entertaining. It wasn't the Zep of old but then again I didn't
care to much for the Song Remains the Same. Not that it was bad
but Plants voice wasn't the same as a few years earlier and I found
alot of the songs drawn out too long.

I heard on Wbcn some King Biscuit live tracks from 1969-1973
that were really incredible. The whole band sounded awesome. Plant
voice matched the first two studio albums. Page was at his peak.
Bonham druming seperated the band from most others and JPJ was his
usual. Some of the selections of songs were You Shook Me, Black
Dog, What is and should never be, Immigrant song, Going to California,
Stairway to Heaven,Whole lotta Love and more.

Ah yes... those were the days. Me and Chuck cruising around
Knoxville Tennessee in his VW bug, playing yep as loud as the
speakers would bear. My all time fave has to be Kashmir, but
Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, and Whole Lotta Love are real
    	close.

We used to listen to Phys Graf all the way through on Friday
nights on Cherokee Blvd (the local college strip), cruising
for chicks and generally having a blast. We made a drink
called Wolf Pussy and life was a party.

There was a song on Presence that was my all-time favorite
for a long time, but I can't recall it at the moment. It
was one of the two songs displayed on the sticker that announced
the hits contained within. Damn, what is that song?

The Devil Dog has selected wisely. Zep is classic. The
music will never die... it is so unique that bands today
steal bits and pieces of the style, but never quite match
the originality. Zep reigns, even after all these years.

Age takes it's toll on everyone, Page is no exception. And
in this day of Vinnie Moores, George Lynches, and Malmsteen even
his best efforts judged by todays standards would leave him rather
limp. Even the old fire dog likes to bark when the alarm goes off
even if he can't jump on the truck. Let's just say Mr. Page didn't
grow old gracefully like Clapton did.

Q> "Mr. Page. What happened to your talents ?"

he kept poking in his arms.

    re. jimmy page
I saw robert plant in concert when he played hammersmith odeon (london)
the concert was ok ,however for the encores jimmy page joined robert
on stage. They went through about four numbers, not one of them was
substandard.Jimmy had put on some weight ,but his playing was great, the
highlight was a slow blues called "smugglers blues" and a storming
version of "rock and roll".Jimmy showed that when he has a clear
head he is still one of the best players around. He made robert
    plants guitarist look painfully ordinary.

During their days there wasn't a band around that was better
than Zep. They could do no wrong. I can't think of a Zep tune that
I don't like. The only thing that gets my goat is when radio stations
play Heartbreaker and don't follow thru with Livin' Lovin' Maid.

Even I, a BIG Zep fan, get tired of hearing "Rock and Roll" again
and again. Why not play stuff like "The Rover" or "Nobody's Fault

I don't like KILO much...too much DJ babble & commercial and they

I just called a friend of mine at WEA Records. She said that the
new Jimmy Page LP has a release date of June 21! Robert Plant
does some vocal work on it, and there is no Paul Rogers (yeah!).

Seriously...I did see Jimmy on the first Firm tour and Robert Plant
on the Pictures at Eleven tour.I was impressed with both shows.
I haven't seen anything go down hill except most of the music that
is put out today by our"contemporary"artists. As far as Page's playing,
both Live AID and the Atlantic birthday party were,as far as musical
accomplishments are concerned, nothing to important.Page does have
a new album coming out June 21(or is it 22???) and Robert Plants
new album is doing well and that gives us old Led Zep fans something

I've heard this one too. I was really disappointed. Just an average
song, with an average singer, average guitar player. Matter of
fact, after about the second time, I found it repetative and annoying
    and changed stations.

Too bad, 'cause Jimmy was one of my fav players back when.

OK, you want to talk about Zep? I'll talk about Zep!

What, in your opinion, made Led Zep so great?

In my opinion, it was their diversity that was their strongest point.
Their ability to grow musically, and to infuse different styles
of music into their own. From Joni Mitchell ("Going to California")
to old blues masters (innumerable tunes) to Eastern ("Kashmir"),
they could do it all, and do it well. That is what made them so
great, and why no one today matches them! (Could you really see
Kingdom Come doing techno-pop? Probably not, but who in the
late 60's thought Zep could do folk? You see what I mean?)

Let's hear some opinions out there!

It was more than their incredible diversity (though that
definitely played a large part in it for me)... it was the
innovative approaches they invented/adopted... it was the
ltrics, the tunes, and let's not forget RP's voice (which
was pretty amazing back then). They stood for everything

I have a few thoughts to share from a big LZ fan. I remember a
night many years ago when I was in junior high when I first heard
LZ for the first time. As with many of you out there, I know how
I felt when the opening bars of Whole Lotta Love starts pumping.
The band was monumental in adding a new form and a new sound to
    rock and roll forever.
There have always been alot of talk how LZ have ripped off old
blues tunes and taken the credit but I disagree with these opinions
because there are so many traditional blues based songs that are
very much alike. Sure some of the songs (Lemon song, Bring it on
Home, How Many More Times) sound alot like already recorded blues
tunes. But the thing that is different is that instead of these
riffs being done on acustic guitar with slide, its now mega watts
of power and a new twist on something old.
Any thoughts on how the books The Lord Of The Rings influenced
the lyrics on so many of their songs?

    OK, you asked for it!

For those of you who don't read the DREGS::MUSIC file, I'll try
and give a brief recap. Pete said he thought Robert Plant was just
jealous over the loss of his ability to sing like the old days,
and that is the major reason Plant dumps on Whitesnake, Kingdom
Come, etc. My arguement as that Robert no longer wants to live in
the past, and instead is looking forward. He just thinks that the
Led Zep style of music has been done, and been done as good as it
is going to be done. So why try and recreate it?

(Hope that was pretty accurate, Pete!)

Now, on with our saga. I can't judge too much, because I've only
heard a couple of new Page tracks, but from what I can see so far,
Jimmy is just trying (unsuccessfully) to recreate the sound and
feel of LZ. Why? Does he really think he is going to do better than
his past? The man had such talent in all types of musical forms,
and now he's putting out records that sound like Billy Squier rejects!
(Anyone notice that the single sounds like a ripoff of Squier's
    "Everbody Wants You"?)

I just feel that as long as Robert is looking forward, and Jimmy
is looking back, Plant will always come out ahead!

    WHAT?!?!?

I can't believe you guys want musicians to stagnate, and even regress!
Is that what music is all about for you guys?

Look, a previous note said to let Jimmy do what he does best. But
what he does (or did) best was experimentation and mixing of styles
and influences. What he is doing now is just ripoff and retread
of things he did 15 YEARS ago. **15 YEARS**!!! Don't you think he
should have made some progress in that time?

And not only his guitar work, either. What happened to the amazing
production jobs he did (the LZ stuff sounds great on CD!). Let's
face it, he has just had too much booze, too much drugs, and too
    much living.

I for one am proud that Robert has continued to grow. And whether
you like his newer style or not, you have to give him the credit
for not resting on his laurels. And now that he has reconciled

In his time, Page was WAY ahead of his time. Zep had a certain
chemistry THEN. So maybe time looked more favorably on some more
than others. Cream and Clapton were hot then too. Then the fire
died, Clapton slowly got it back together and came back but not
like he was. Nobody is beating him up for it now. Maybe Page will
do the same. You get older you mellow out some - Plant did, Clapton
did, Bob Segar did, the list goes on. Let the old dogs lay out

Re .77 Mr. Scary, very well put!

I think that this is true of all the musicians that you mentioned.
There was a time and place for Zeppelin and it is now passed. Its
time to move on to new faces and styles. But, I would very much
like to see both Plant and Page stay in the music business no matter
what style they may play. Age and wear and tear from the road take
their toll no doubt about that. I have been a drummer for 20+ years
and I'll be this first to say that I can't do some of the things
    I used to.
When the Atlantic thing was on the tube when LZ reunion was done,
I admired Robert Plant very much for one thing that maybe nobody
else did or if so never mentioned. I got the feeling that at the
end of Stairway To Heaven, he really gave it all to try and belt
out the last verses like he did years ago. If you watch he gave
it all on "And as we wind on down the road, there walks a lady we
all know" and then dropped a full range realizing it wasn't there.
I'm sure a sobering moment. Any one else feel this or just me
    wishful thinking??

Robert Plant - October 30 - Worcester Centrum
Jimmy Page - October 29 - Worcester Centrum

I found out that Jimmy is playing in Philadelphia on the 30th, so
if there is any type of reunion/jamming planned, it will be on the
29th at Jimmy's show.

BTW - Jimmy said in interviews on both WBCN and WAAF that there will

39.89Floyds Robert Plant ReviewESKIMO::VENTURAMon Oct 31 1988 11:0340

I went to Plants show last night at the Centrum in Worcester
(oct 30th). I saw him on his 'Shakin' and Stirred' tour a couple
years ago and saw quite a few differences in each of those shows.
This time around robert did not seem like he was into the show or
maybe he was ill, I don't know. His voice obviously isn't what
it used to be. Instead of holding notes, he would scat it out.
As for his new band, they are a talented 'young' bunch, but only
in the years to come will they be able to prove themselves true
rockers worthy of playing in a band with the likes of Plant. Don't
get me wrong, they were good, but you could see where their youth
and inexperience held back on what could have been a superb show.
The lighting and visuals were much less then the last time I
saw him and this was good and bad. Good for the fact that you were
more apt to watch the people performing rather than the vids(even
though they had them- the one for the Imigrant Song was by far the
best of the night). But the band wasn't as active as when Robbie
Blunt and the others from the old band, even though this band was
much younger. Also there were no backing vocals, instead it was
all done with pre-recorded stuff which in my opinion is a rip-off.
Another thing I thought that took away from the show was the
fact that this was a 'Robert Plant' concert, but half (maybe more)
of the tunes were old Zep tunes. A couple to show his roots would
have been fine, but I went see Plant do his tunes and possibly a
few choice Zep tunes. The ones that he did do from the old days
were done with quite a tasteful flare. I guess the show I wanted
to see wasn't what the game plan called for, but it was good just
the same (in spite of how you may be reading this). In my opinion
Plant was only 75% of what I saw a couple years ago, but that is
still a good 65% better than most of the bands that are out today.
Plant is still a rocker that can not be put down, but age is
showing with the vocal chords but you would not see with the gleem
that is in his eyes when crowd cheers at the end of each song.

This is in reply to the Page "my talent has gone to the wispering
wind" notes earler, did any of your known that Jimmy Page was the
top session musician in europe at the age of 19, and played backing
guitar on such hits as DELILA by Tom Jones and "Not Unusual" same
vocalist, spinning of on a tangent here, way back in the 60's
he was left on his own to a scandanavian tour by the Yard birds
of which "don't quot me " but i think he was the only member left,
so he pulls to gether a group from select session musician ie
    Plant, bonham, Jones.
The name LED ZEPPELIN came from a studio jam of the new Yardbirds
when a crazy drummer called Keith Moon was prensent, and his immortal

I had the opportunity to see LZ on 3 different tours. The first
time was just after the release of LZ2, which I believe was the
opening date of their second US tour. I also saw them on The Song
Remains The Same tour. But, the most memoral time was after the
release of LZ4. It was at the Denver Collosium. LZ came on stage
at 8:00 and played with no back-up band until 12:30. I remember
as the house lights went down there was a long wail like the sound
of an airplane crashing and LZ opening with The Immigrant Song.
At the time Plants vocals were very very strong. They played for
about 90 minutes and then John Bonham left the stage for Plant,
Page and John P. Jones to play about half an hour of accustical
stuff (Tangerine, Goin To California etc, that kind of thing).
After that they got electric again with Moby Dick with Bonzo's
typical 15-20 minutes of soloing. Then the big one, Stairway To
Heaven which brought the house down. I can't remember alot of the
order of play, it has been a long time. The close of the show was
Whole Lotta Love and Rock and Roll. It was quite a show for its
time. Let me say that granted Page and Plant have aged and mellowed
out. They are not what they used to be but who is? But let me just
say that if you had heard them then and at that moment in time they
on top there were none better. Remembering those opening few seconds
of the show with Plants wail at the opening of Immigrant Song will

My older sister dragged me to the Physical Graffiti tour, and I
must admit it was the best(if not only) concert I'd ever been to.
They really jam on record, but are ten times better live. LZ is
the only band I know that were better live...

39.155MARKER::BUCKLEYMotor ManThu Jul 06 1989 15:364
Jimi used a Les Paul to gig with, but he often used a Silvertone (those
thin, ugly things with the silver pickupsin em) or a Tele to record
    with.

39.156HAZEL::STARRWhat do ya do when you get lonely...?Thu Jul 06 1989 15:526
Yeah, Buck's got it pretty accurate. If I remember correctly, he mainly used
the Tele in the studio. But by LZ IV, he switched over to using the Les Paul
in the studio. The only exception was the solo for "Stairway to Heaven", on
which he reverted back to the Telecaster.

39.165'Why Jimmy Page Is My Favorite Guitarist', by Alan StarrHAZEL::STARRWe're beating plowshares into swords...Sat Nov 25 1989 03:3270
OK, with all thw fuss being made lately about Jimmy Page, I thought it was
about time that I put in my $.02 worth. As most of you know, I am a big Zep
fan, and have been a staunch supporter of Page in the past. That trend will
continue with this note - I hope to explain why, IMO, that Page is one of (if
not the best) guitarist in rock and roll.

First of all, the short version: Versatility.

Now, the longer version:

The thing that continually amazes me about Page is not his technical ability
(although that is substantial, even if not up to today's speedsters). What
does continually impress me, even upon the n-th listen, is his ability to feel
at home at numerous styles of music. And I'm not talking about just two or
three here - I'm talking about more styles than half of today's guitarist have
even *heard* before!

Let's take a quick glance at some of Zep's catalog, and look around.

Hard rock - "Immigrant Song", "Whole Lotta Love", "Heratbreaker" - these songs
pretty much defined the term 'heavy metal' when they came out. Oh
sure, Zep wasn't alone - we've all heard the arguments about Blue
Cheer and many others - but Zep was definitely the one to have the
largest effect on the most poeple.

Rock and Roll - "Rock and Roll", "Song Remains The Same", "Trampled Underfoot"
                - just a few of the straight ahead rock songs that still
                influence most rockers thru today.

Blues - "How Many More Times", "I Can't Quit You Babe", "Since I've Been
Loving You" (which alone qualifies him for the Hall of Fame) - Page
may have stolen some of the songs (I'll grant you that), but he also
made them his own - his style, flash, sound, and feel was all
        personalized.

Folk - "Going to California" was inspired by Joni Mitchell, and was written
as a tribute to her style of music.

Celtic - "Battle for Evermore" is a classic example.

Boogie/Rockabilly - "Boogie With Stu", "Hot Dog" - you can tell that this is
one of Page's favorite styles to play - he seems to enjoy
                    them so much.

Ballads - "Stairway to Heaven" (of course), "All of My Love", "Rain Song" -
the man has written some of the most beautiful and memorable ballads
          of the rock era.

Pop - "Dancing Days", "Fool In The Rain", "Houses of the Holy" - nice bopping
tunes that have great hooks in them.

Eastern - the majesty of "Kashmir" is the perfect example of this.

Experimental - "Whole Lotta Love"'s middle section using the theramin. The use
of the violin bow in "Dazed and Confused". The interplay of
acoustic and electric on songs like "Ramble On" - not only did
Page break the rules, but he wrote them for years to come.

Its for reasons like this that I consider Page to be one of the greats. Even
if he isn't the fastest. Even if he isn't the cleanest. Even is he isn't as
great as he once was. All those things pale when looking at the body of work
he has given us.

And in 20 years, I'll look back at the career of someone like Vai or Gilbert
or Satch. And if they have as much to offer as Page does today, then they will
earn my equal repect. But until that day, Page still wins my heart over the
others.

Page exerted a lot of effort on the work in the studio. He was fairly
imaginative creating sounds.

For example the violin bow on "Dazed and Confused" and "How Many More
Times". The double miking of the solo on "Ramble On", where one mike was
pointed at the amp, one at the far studio wall. I think that Whole lotta
love was pretty different than anything else around 1969. How about the
schizophrenic "Lemon Song" where there is lead on one side and rhythm on
the other.

Listening to how much Led Zeppelin is played on the radio today, and
considering that some of their stuff is over 20 years old is amazing.

I too agree with Alan (.165) and will add that I'm surprised by how
infrequently I hear mention of the pre-Zeppelin work done by Jimmy
Page by both those who are fans and not.

The comment earlier regarding having to be "into" LZ to appreciate
the work by Page is non-sense especially when you consider his
versatility, not only as shown with LZ but his prior wide-range
	workings with performers and acts.

There's countless session work done by Page and not just the ones

For those who don't know, the list is from a 4 album package
entitled 'James Patrick Page Session Man' from the Led Zeppelin
	Fan Club, Manchester, England.

The following is a copy of the words on the back of the album
which in my opinion are one of the best early chronology
	recollections I have ran across.

"Jimmy page is widely regarded as one of the best, of not the
best, ever to play guitar in rock & roll. His timing, his strong
rhythmic base combined with an inventive imagination, and above all
his versatility and wide range of stylistic influences, put him in a
league of his own. The reason for his pre-eminence, as revealed in a
recent series of interviews in Trouser Press magazine, has a lot to do
with his background as a session guitarist. During the 1960's, Page
played on literally hundreds of records, commercials, film scores, etc.,
for which he was required to master every imaginable style of playing,
and that discipline provided the foundation for his later triumphs with
	the Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin.

Page took up the guitar after hearing "Baby Let's Play House"
by Elvis Presley (1955). A dedicated fan and record collector, he
studied the playing of Scotty Moore, Carl Perkins, James Burton, and
other pioneers of early rock & roll. Around 1961 or '62 he joined his
first band, Neil Christian & the Crusaders. Christian was a sort of
R & B-based pop singer whose records sound quite tame by today's
standards, but their repetoir of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley songs
was considered daring at that time. he left Christian's band before
their first record was made, and at age 17 took more than a year off
for art school, during which time he jammed at blues clubs and
occasionally joined Cyril Davies' bands on stage. It was during
this time that someone referred some session work his way, and
though his first two sessions were straightforward, melodic pop
tunes, both (Jet Harris & Tony Meehan's "Diamonds" and
Carter-Lewis' "Somebody Told My Girl") became hits, and
consequently Page was in demand for more sessions, which he
found an easy source of income while avoiding the rigors
of touring with a regular band.

From 1963 through 1965, Page sat in on more sessions than
he could possibly remember. Some artists he recalls backing include
Donovan, the Dubliners, the Everly Brothers, the Pretty Things,
Jackie DeShannon, Petula Clark, P.J. Proby, Cliff Richard,
Johnny Hallyday, Burt Bacharach, and Billy Fury. On most of
these his role was strictly to play from a written chart,
but there were occasional session when he was called in to
assist some raw young R&B or Merceybeat band who wanted that
extra edge that might them the elusive hit.

It is on these records that one can hear Page's style
gradually developing. On this album we have attempted to
gather together the best of his session performances, and in
listening to it the progression can be clearly seen. The hot
solos with Mickey Most and Pat Wayne in '63, his passionate
rock & roll phrasing with Dave Berry and the Sneekers, and that
extraordinary handful of obscure 45's on which, with today's
hindsight, we can hear Page mapping out unknown territory
in his use of distortion, speed, feedback, and other forms
of experimentation that were completely unknown (and unrecognized)
	at the time.

Listening now to records like the Primitives' "How Do You
Feel" and "You Said", or Mickey Finn's "Night Comes Down", one can
only wonder that Page wasn't exalted for this work the way
guitarists like Townshend and Clapton were for much less
adventurous playing. two and three years later. To this day,
few have matched the weird intensity he achieved on the
First Gear's "Leave My Kitchen Alone" or the eerie, echoey
effect on the Brooks' "Once in a While". The unfortunate
fact is that most of these records made little impact at the
time, and thus were never heard by those who might have
	acclaimed them.

Of course, Page lent his hand to quite a few hits
during his session period, most widely-known being the
Kinks, the Who, and Them. As he explains it: "I was mainly
called in to sessions as insurance. It was usually myself
and a drummer, Bobbie Graham, though they never mention
him these days. On the Then session, it was very embarrassing
because you noticed that as each number passed, another
member of the band would be substituted for by a session
musician. These were times I wished I'd never been booked.
Talk about daggers! I played on all the classics, "Here Come
the Night", "Baby Please Don't Do".

Shel Talmy, producer of the Kinks and the Who, was
in the habit of keeping Page on hand in case he was needed.
On "Can't Explain" and "Bald Headed Woman" he added some fuzzy
guitar. Normally when the band had a good enough guitarist,
Page played second rhythmn or added little bits to spice
things up. This led to much confusion later when interviewers
would ask Ray Davies and Pete Townshend if Page had played
all the lead guitars on their records, arousing their
	natural indignation.

In 1965, when Andrew Loog Oldham started his Immediate
label, Page was brought in to do A&R, production, and some
playing. He participated in some blues jams with Clapton
and others, and produced records like the Fifth Avenue's
"Just Like Anyone Would Do", which he also wrote. Although
Page was becoming quite well known, a sole single ("She
Just Satisfies") bombed and by 1966 he had decided to
join the Yardbirds, bringing an end to his days as a session
man, though he has from time to time sat in on sessions for
friends, such as the Philamore Lincoln track included here
	(referenced above).

There are still hundreds of Jimmy Page sessions
yet to be identified, and we hope that the appearance of
this album will spur collectors to bring a few more to
light. In the meantime, we hope you'll enjoy this album
as much as we enjoyed putting it together!"

I probably shouldn't get into this but what the... Okay, so the
thing that most folks are probably in agreement about is how Page
hasn't aged gracefully but anyone who can compare the Firm tours and
the not to distant Outrider tour possibly saw a more Page-like
performance during Outrider as I did.

Anyhow, that it's it for now!

Jimmy Page is writing material for his second solo album

Jimmy and Robert don't get along that well anymore, from what I
understand. Last year they played back to back nights at the
centrum and didn't even jam together one night.

Both of their bands covered the Zeppelin material prettty well though.
Robert's guitarist (I don't even know who he was touring with) did a
pretty good job IMO on Jimmy's stuff. I know alot of people
watched their little HBO reunion early last year, and it was HORRIBLE!
I would die if they ever reformed like the rest of the world is doing.
As the band announced when Bonzo died, there will be no more Zeppelin,
because Zeppelin was dead, Bonzo was dead. And I personally don't
think they could find a drummer with Bonzo's style. I think a
reformation would ruin what they already have established.

As for Jimmy's playing, every time that I have seen him live, he
has done pretty well. Now, I've seen some performances on tv,
and cable where he made a disgrace of himself. Flip.. who is John
    Miles? any Ideas?

Also, I really don't care for Robert's new stuff as well..

On the topic of less than perfect performances by Led Zeppelin I
personally prefer the factors of real life entering into the
outcome of a show rather than a so called destined to be perfect
concert such as the recent Rolling Stones tour.

Don't take me wrong I'm not condemning the Stones, I enjoy most
	of their earlier material.

I am referring to the use of sequencers and off stage musicians
to deliver what they consider a live performance. (live by who?)

There's two things that come out of this, 1.) some live shows
may have well not been as good as one would expect. 2.) others
may have been better than one would ever expect. Both of these
were often the case with LZ, at least from what I've heard.

One fairly recent example is the Atlantic 40th anniversary in which
it was quite an event but something to be savored on recording
	medium I'm afraid not.

I would much rather be disappointed and know that a better
performance was possible then to have watched/listened to a souped
up musical cartoon (for lack of a technical/more demeaning term).

Many of us never saw the entire band together but no two shows
were ever the same from what I've read/heard.

We can all probably imagine the rigors of touring how it can be
extremely tiring, etc. but that's all a part of it. I realize
a lot of pressure is placed on every show to be perfect but is
that what some people really want? Do they want to sacrifice
an actual live band for an electronic mimic? After all if that's
the case then might as well sit home and play the recorded mediums!

Just my opinion and open to [dis]agreement, etc.

	- Jim

P.S. As far as the Stones or any band being too old, I think that has
nothing to do with it, that's just a poor excuse, something to fall
back on. I've always been a fan of the Stones and will continue
to be but feel a need to express how I feel and as I said welcome
a continued discussion since I feel it fits well with the earlier
ranting and raving regarding Page, specifically his loss to be as
	he was 20+ years ago.

"Physical Graffiti, the Led Zeppelin Show" will be at the Channel
	on Saturday, January 20.

In my opinion this band is a fine compliment for any LZ fan who
may already have past memories of live shows, enjoys listening to
studio recordings and/or the vast assortment of live recordings.

They generally perform without a warm-up act and play two full
length sets. Some times they even do an acoustic set.

All in all it's a very good show and should be seen by any fan.
If not for the enjoyment of hearing your favorite tunes played
live the share on stage excitement they generate to the crowd
	is worth it.

If you can't make it to this show just call 203-231-9434 for

I've seen them a couple of times and also noticed ads for

Michael White, sure has all of Robert Plant's moves and

  New Zep Cd's---

The new package will be probably 3 or 4 CD's containing their best hits
from all their albums...with three unreleased cd tracks 1) Hey, Hey what
can I do (only released as a B side 45. 2)Traveling Riverside Blues (an
old blues number played live in 1969. It sounds alot like an old Johnny
Winter song from his first columbia album JOHNNY WINTER). 3) White
Summer ( a 8 minute version of what turned out to be Black Mountain
    Side).

The main thing is that Jimmy Page is working daily in the studio
with the engineer's on the package which will be mixed from the original

I think someone a little further back in this discussion asked about
the symbols on the cover of the box set?? Was that the question??
If so, the symbols were left in a wheat field in England by,
supposedly, UFO's. They are still unexplained at this point. If that
    wasn't the question, ignore this...................

Being a Led Zepplin fan from the first album on, I always thought that
they were a very inovative band, musically. However, as time keeps
ticking away, their music, like everyones, becomes dated. I still
listen to them and I always will. But not with the frequency that I
used too. Just like your favorite color, not everyone will agree with
you. Personally, I still love LZ.

How many people in here have actually seen a LZ concert; and I'm not
talking about a video. I have never seen one, but from some people that
I have talked to that are just a lil older than me, they say that they
were very good shows. How about it anybody out there old enough to
admit having gone to a Zeppie show?

I'll admit to seeing them a few times, 3 to be exact. The concert
tape "The Song Remains The Same" is a very bad example of what I
saw. I thought all the times I saw them were very good, except for
the tour they did for "Houses Of The Holy". It seemed they were
really struggling with the sound and getting it together.
I think that what alot of opinion here says about LZ holds alot
of truth, I can understand what some can't see what the big fuss is
about this band. The major thing is age I think. When you think about
what other musical styles were around in late 60's, the over all way
society was changing in major leaps and bounds, insert the first eight
notes in Whole Lotta Love and it can truly impact you, well me anyway.
Its no slam to anyone but I guess you would have had to been there.

This is in reply to Mr/Miss/Other Perkins (note 39.260) who seems to think that
Zep are/were overrated, amongst other things.

Firstly,.. and this does have a strong bearing on the conversation else I
wouldn't put it in...
... I WAS BORN IN '67 an Zep were finished when I was 13 maybe 14! I never got
to hear any Zep at all until 1989 when I was 22!, so certainly no media hipe
influenced my decision that Zep were a brilliant band, and I certainly
like many, many, many others, don't listen to them just to maintain an image.

In note 39.260 Perkins says that Zep were overrated, You correctly mentioned
Zep had a huge cult following in the States, and not as much in England... the
answer...America's got 20 times more population than England.
Even in the States, they did not release that many singles as other bands in
their day, someone correct if that's not true. There may have been media hipe
at the time about the band, But if you had a band of today that got immense
reviews in every metal mag, would you then say they were overrated if you
personally didn't like their musik?

As for Page not being up to guitar solos, maybe you haven't realized that what
happens in the studio is very different from what happens on the stage, What Zep
did in the studio with given technology WAS BRILLIANT, If you'd ever listened to
them on a live album they were ten times better, Pages guitar riffs synchronised
with Jones' bass the Bonham's drums were ten times faster and cleaner than a
lot of bands can play live today.

Also what type of lyrics do you like, songs about evil, the devil, sex, drugs..
Not that I don't wholly approve of songs like that. But Zep sang songs that had
great emotion, and alot of songs that had immense lyrics about more
philosophical things than just pissing about passing time.

However without outside (eg media) influences I've now got the whole of the Zep
albums, personally for me they will be the best true band that have ever existed
as I can always find a Zep song that fits any one of my many many moods.

If you were around then, if you were listening to the music that was
coming out then, you would know why some of us think that LZ is the
greatest. They offered a musical style that nobody else did at that
time. Nobody could sing like Plant, nobody could play like Page,
almost nobody was as good on bass as Jones, and nobody ruled the beat
like Bonnam. Nowadays, so many recordings have spawned from LZ music,
that "newcomers" are sick of LZ before they even hear them. That's all
they've been listening to for years. Know what I mean??

hear any LZ. Stations do have a way of making nice sond sickening,
like when Tesla was at the AAF station and played "Signs". I thought
that was pretty neat. Since they did it at the station, AAF decided, I
guess, to show it off. Day after day, hour after hour, they played
that song. Now, I HATE IT!!!

For Zepp' fans in the Boston area, WBCN has designated this month
"Zepptember". All month long they are playing more-than-their-usual
amount of Led Zepplin along with the usual promotion sh*t (e.g. free
books, posters, CDs, etc.). I only get to listen to BCN every now and then
but it appears they are doing at least one tune per hour with the
occaisional two or three tunes in a row. I still haven't caught their
regualar feature at 10:00 pm, "Get The Led Out", to see what effect this
month has had on it (I usually just get out of the record store about
that time and I'm on my way to the local watering hole so I usually
    miss it).

Who was in Led Zeppelin?

James Patrick Page (b. 9 January 1944 in Heston, Middlesex) "Pagey"
John Baldwin (John Paul Jones) (b. 3 January 1946 in Sidcup, Kent) "Jonesy"
John Henry Bonham (b. 31 May 1948 in Redditch, Worcestershire) "Bonzo"
Robert Anthony Plant (b. 20 August 1948 West Bromwich, Staffordshire) "Percy"

Zeppelin's manager was Peter Grant.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
When and where was Led Zeppelin formed?

A brief chronology:

Jimmy Page joins The Yardbirds in June of 1966, first playing bass, then
dual lead guitar with Jeff Beck, then replacing Beck in November of the
same year. In December, John Paul Jones does string arrangements for The
Yardbirds' album _Little Games_.

In 1967, Robert Plant and John Bonham come together in The Band Of Joy.
In March of the same year, Jeff Beck releases a solo single entitled
"Hi Ho Silver Lining," which is backed with a Page composition entitled
"Beck's Bolero". This song is recorded by Page, Beck, Nicky Hopkins,
John Paul Jones, and Keith Moon. At this session Moon and John Entwistle,
who are tired of The Who, discuss forming a band with Page and Beck.
It is here that Moon announces that they should call the group Lead Zeppelin,
becuase, "...it'll go over like a ***in' lead balloon!" The "a" was later
removed from "Lead" so that Americans would pronounce it correctly.

In April of 1968, Page, Jones, and Bonham play on Donovan's "Hurdy
Gurdy Man," and Jones asks to be part of any new group Page is considering
forming. The Band Of Joy breaks up in May. On 22 June 1968, it is
announced that Keith Relf and Jim McCarty are leaving The Yardbirds.
In August, Page, Yardbirds' bassist Chris Dreja, and Peter Grant travel
to Birmingham to see Plant in a group called Hobbstweedle. Plant is
offered the vocalist job in Page's new band in August after visiting Page's
home. In the same month, Dreja drops out and is replaced by Jones. Plant
then recommends Bonham for drums, and a tireless campaign convinces Bonham
to turn down more lucrative offers from the likes of Tim Rose and Joe
Cocker. In September, the 4 play their first rehearsals at Gerrard Street,
London. Beginning September 14, they play their first tour, still billed
as the New Yardbirds. They record _Led Zeppelin I_ in October, and play
their first gig as Led Zeppelin at Surrey University October 17.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
How and when did John Bonham die?

On 24 September 1980, Bonham left Worcestershire to meet with the group at
Bray studios for rehearsals for the upcoming US tour. He drank quadruple
screwdrivers steadily along the way. After the rehearsals, the band retreated
to Page's Windsor house, where Bonham continued to drink and then passed
out. At around 1:45pm on 25 September, sound technician and Plant roadie
Benji Le Fevre checked on Bonham to find out why he hadn't stirred. There
was no pulse. A doctor arrived and pronouced Bonham dead at the scene.
A subsequent coroner's inquest revealed the cause of death to be accidental--
Bonaham choked on his own vomit after drinking the equivilent of 40 measures
of vodka. Alcohol poisoning may have been involved, but was not positively
determined. On December 4th, 1980, Led Zeppelin issued the following
statement:

We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect
we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt
by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not
continue as we were.

_Led Zeppelin_ (4CD boxed set) (October 1990)
Selections from the studio albums, with the addition of "Hey Hey What
Can I Do," a live in-studio "White Summer/Black Mountain Side," a live
in-studio "Travelling Riverside Blues," and a Page amalgamation of "Moby
Dick" and "Bonzo's Montreaux". The non-US version, later released in the
States, is entitled _Remasters_, is a 2CD set, and contains one song not
on the 4CD set ("Good Times Bad Times"). All tracks are remastered from
the lowest generation tapes available to Page and George Marino.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Should I buy the boxed set? How about _Remasters_?

The sound quality of both is incredibly improved over the US CD releases.
For that reason alone either is worth getting, at least until such time
as Page remasters the remaining Zeppelin tracks and Atlantic reissues the
10 original CD's. As for the "unreleased" material--"HHWCID" is available
on the "Immigrant Song" single, "Traveling Riverside Blues" is a staple
of AOR radio, and there are many versions of "White Summer" superior to
the one released on the set. The packaging is outstanding. From there,
you'll have to make up your own mind.

_Remasters_, the short version of the set, differs only in the number of
songs offered and the presence of "Good Times Bad Times," which is not
on the 4CD set. Its value to those who already own the 4CD set is principally
that of a collector's item. But it is a viable (and cheaper) alternative to
the larger set. Again, make up your own mind.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
So what is the fourth album called, anyway?

Nothing. It's officially untitled. It's commonly referred to as Four
Symbols, ZOSO, and most often simply Led Zeppelin IV. The album, as
originally released, carried absolutely no band or title identification
anywhere on the jacket.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's the deal with those symbols?

Page's symbol, while _not_ standing for "ZOSO" or any combination of
letters, is a mystery. Plant reports being told exactly once what it
means, but has since forgotten. Jones' symbol came from a book of runes
and is said to represent confidence and competence. Bonham's came from the
same book, and represents the man-wife-child trilogy. It has also been
remarked that it is the symbol for Ballantine Beer. Plant, like Page,
designed his own symbol, and the feather in the circle is based on a sign
of the ancient Mu civilization.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's that thing on the _Presence_ cover?

It's called The Obelisk, and was designed by Hipgnosis (the design company)
to represent Led Zeppelin's "force and presence." It is not supposed to
refer to the Monolith of 2001.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's up with the album covers for _In Through The Out Door_?

There are 6 different covers, each showing the same scene from a different
point of view. The album originally came in a plain brown wrapper. An added
bonus--the inner sleeve, when dampened, changes color.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's Zeppelin's best song/album?

This is a purely subjective opinion--there's no right answer.

Albums--_IV_ has sold the most copies, though it never hit #1 (it was behind
Carole King's _Tapestry_). Critics and fans usually pick either _IV_ or
_Physical Graffiti_ as the best, though the most often cited by musicians
as being influential is _II_. Plant's fave is _PG_.

Songs--"Stairway To Heaven" is the most-requested and most-played rock song
of all time. It was never released as a single, so comparisons to "End Of
The Road" are not applicable. The band seems to feel that "Kashmir" captures
the essence of the band better than any other song, though Page and Jones
profess abiding love for "STH," and Page is proud of "Achilles Last Stand."
Plant loathes "Stairway."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's up with (song title) (and who's Roy Harper)?

A few notes about individual songs:

"Dazed And Confused"--The Yardbirds performed this with different lyrics
    	    	      as "I'm Confused".

"Black Mountain Side"--Viram Jasnai plays tabla.

"Hats Off To (Roy) Harper"--Roy Harper is an English folk musician who
toured (not in the performance sense) with
Zeppelin and with whom Page and other Zeppelin
    	    	    	    members have often worked.

"Bron-Y-Aur"--A cabin where Zeppelin often retreated for composition and
relaxation. It means "The Golden Breast".

"Black Dog"--The title came from a black dog that wandered in and out of
the studio during the _IV_ sessions.

"The Battle Of Evermore"--Sandy Denny (of Fairport Convention) on vocals.
Her parts were handled live by John Paul Jones.

"D'yer Mak'er"--pronounced like Jamaica.

"Boogie With Stu"--Stu is Ian Stewart, the Stones resident pianist.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are there a lot of references to J.R.R. Tolkien works in Zeppelin songs?

Not really. "Ramble On" and "The Battle Of Evermore" feature direct
references, but that's it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Didn't Zeppelin copy (song title) from (blues artists)?

Yes, no, and maybe. Here's a partial list of covers, credited and
otherwise:

"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"--Anne Bredon

"You Shook Me," "I Can't Quit You Baby," and "Whole Lotta Love"--Willie Dixon

"Dazed And Confused"--Jake Holmes

"Black Mountain Side"--traditional, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn

"The Lemon Song"--Chester Burnett, Albert King, Robert Johnson

"Traveling Riverside Blues"--Robert Johnson

"Since I've Been Loving You"--brief lyrical nod to Moby Grape

"Gallows Pole"--traditional

"Hats Off To (Roy) Harper"--traditional, Bukka White

"Black Dog"--vocal arrangement based on Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well"

"Rock And Roll"--drawn from Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly/Keep A
    	    	 Knockin'"

"When The Levee Breaks"--Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy

"Custard Pie"--some Bukka White material

"In My Time Of Dying"--traditional, Bob Dylan

"Boogie With Stu"--Richie Valens

"Nobody's Fault But Mine"--Blind Willie Johnson

"We're Gonna Groove"--B.B. King, J. Bethea

So is this thievery? With the exception of the uncredited Willie Dixon
tunes and the lifting by the Yardbirds of Jake Holmes' "D&C," anyone
who understands the blues tradition knows that theft is an irrelevant
concept within that musical genre. Besides, as was the case with "Traveling
Riverside Blues," often the Zeppelin version bore little if any resemblance
to the original.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Where's all the unreleased stuff?

There are very few unreleased _studio_ Zeppelin songs, as most of the
extras have appeared on _PG_ and _Coda_. There are quite a few jams
and alternate takes to be had, however. As far as professionally-
recorded live audio and video, most of this still resides in Page's
vaults, though most of the soundboard bootlegs of the past few years
are taken from tapes stolen from his house.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How does the band feel about bootlegs?

First of all, a few definitions-"bootlegs" are, in this case, defined as
live concert recordings, studio outtakes, radio broadcasts, and similar
material neither released nor sanctioned by the band or its management.
They are not to be confused with counterfeit copies of legitimate releases,
which are uniformly denounced and actively prosecuted by the law.

In the past, Peter Grant used to make surprise stops in record stores to
destroy any Zeppelin bootlegs he found. He also confiscated or destroyed
any microphones and recording equipment he found at concerts. Since then,
however, the band has mellowed considerably on the subject.

Jimmy Page: "_Coda_ was released, basically, because there was so much
bootleg stuff out. We thought, 'Well, if there's that much interest,
then we may as well put the rest of our studio stuff out.'" The much-
discussed chronological live album has not been put out by Page, becuase,
"there are so many bootlegs around that people who are interested have
probably made up their own compilation." He also has said, on the
possibility of more studio outtakes being released: "Ah, no. There's
some great live stuff. But there's also some great live bootlegs, ha
ha. Thank God they're there and thanks to the people who send me these
things. I listen to them and go, 'My God, that was good. I wish it
had been recorded on the line.'"

Robert Plant has often been known to autograph bootlegs, and all three
members have from time to time requested copies of some of the better
known productions. And a Page fan reports meeting Page and giving him
a copy of a 10-album Zeppelin bootleg set. Page said, "Thanks," and
continued walking on, as rock stars usually do when fans hand them
something. But when he saw that the gift was a bootleg, Page stopped,
went back to the fan, and said, "Thanks! This is great!"

Page's opinion of boots has soured somewhat since the release of
_Outrider_, however, as his house was broken into during the early
recording stages. Among the items stolen were the demo tapes for
what was to be a 2-album release (rather than the 1 that came out),
numerous studio outtakes and live soundboard recordings which have
since flooded the market, and the pro-shot Knebworth video from
8-11-79.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
So where do I get bootlegs?

This is a difficult subject for the list, as we are dealing with an
illegality (though a not-very-well-enforced one). Specific info on
bootlegs and traders will not appear in this FAQL, nor should the
actual transfer of material appear in the list itself. Caution should
be excercized for the protection of both the list and the traders
themsleves. Having supplied the necessary disclaimers...

Small (non-chain) record stores that advertise "New-Old-Used" records
almost always carry bootleg albums and CDs, as well as some out-of-print
stuff. _Goldmine_ and _Record Collector_ magazine can be scanned for
sources. Tape trading, the most popular form of collecting, is usually
restricted to individuals rather than organizations or companies. You
should also know that many bootleg collectors/traders frown on the "selling"
of bootlegs, although beginning collectors are often restricted to that
option.

Most often, simply posting to the list and stating your desire to find
unreleased Zeppelin material will start the ball rolling. Note that the
discussion of bootlegs is in no way illegal.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakland, 7-11-79 Knebworth, 7-5-80 Munich

Note that there's duplication and overlap in the above lists. A few notes
about formats--the quality of CD releases is only occasionally better
than other formats, but the permanence and playback advantages of CDs
have convinced many collectors to concentrate on them. The CDs are
not always tracked well, though--track markers are often misplaced or
missing altogether. LPs suffer from quality problems with repeated
playback and scratching, but have the advantage of better packaging.
Tapes are the cheapest option, and suffer the most from successive
generations of copies. However, they have two significant advantages:
many shows on have never appeared on CD or LP, and complete concerts
are much easier to obtain on this format (CDs and LPs exhibit the so-called
"slice and dice" mentality of bootleggers trying to meet time requirements
and still make money).

Are there any books on Zeppelin?

Many. Few good ones, though. The key resources are:

Led Zeppelin Complete--(piano) Music from the first 5 albums.

Led Zeppelin--(music) A 2-book companion to the 4CD set, features notation
and tabulature for all instruments used on the boxed set
tracks. The transcription is excellent, though the lyrical
interpretations leave something to be desired.

Led Zeppelin--Howard Mylett

Led Zeppelin In The Light--Howard Mylett and Richard Bunton

Led Zeppelin In Their Own Words--Paul Kendall

Led Zeppelin A Visual Documentary--Paul Kendall

Led Zeppelin Portraits--Neal Preston--This book is a must-have, as Preston
was an "offical" photographer and knew better than
anyone how to capture Zeppelin's mystique.

Led Zeppelin The Final Acclaim--Dave Lewis

Led Zeppelin The Book--Chris Welch

The Illustrated Collectors Guide To Led Zeppelin--Robert Godwin--Another
must-have, covers the legal and bootleg
discographies on vinyl and CD. 3rd edition.

Led Zeppelin A Celebration--Dave Lewis--The principal resource for this
    	    	    	    FAQL. Incredible.

Led Zeppelin Heaven And Hell--Charles Cross and Erik Flannigan, with Neal
Preston--another key resource for this FAQL.

Jimmy Page: Tangents Within A Framework--Howard Mylett

and, of course:

Hammer Of The Gods--Stephen Davis--The band denounces it, and it is mostly
the rememberings of tour manager/perpetual addict
Richard Cole, whose own book is much more valuable
for these insights. Readers should know that Stephen
Davis once claimed quite seriously, in an interview
for a Zeppelin fanzine, that Jimmy Page had put some
sort of curse on him. Read at your own risk.

Info on lyrics, tabs, GIFs, etc.:

***(NB: this area is under construction. Info is not guaranteed, and
         sources remain incomplete and unverified)***

Lyrics--correct lyrics for the Zeppelin catalog are largely unavailable.
The lyric transcription in the boxed set folio is terrible, the lyrics
in _Complete_ are deliberately incorrect in places, and there are no
canonical sources for the rest. _Presence_, for instance, remains a
particularly hard album to complete lyrics for. See addresses below.

Tabs--the boxed set folio has excellent tabulature (and standard notation)
for vocals, all guitars, bass, drums and percussion, keyboards, and all other
instruments. See addresses below.

GIFs--See addresses below.

One good on-line source for info is our own Maurice, who has available
the following information:

-lyrics (long)
-tour & bootleg info (long)
-list of bootlegs with songlists (long)
-singles (a short list)
-list of LZ covers by other artists (medium)
-list of covers Played live by zep (medium)
-info about Page's sessions (long)
-list of anagrams :-)
-list of video boots (short)
-list of books and mags (long)
- A long Jim Zappia file of roots of Zep songs
-lots of other stuff I saved...

FTP sites with Zeppelin info include:

ftp.nevada.edu	pub/guitar (tabs)
sumex-aim.stanford.edu	info-mac
    	    	    	fonts	(_HOTH_ font)
card	(Hypercard stack of Zeppelin info)
    	    	    	sound	(Zeppelin samples)

Below, unedited, are the results of an ARCHIE search for ftp-able Zeppelin

What did the members of Zeppelin do after the band broke up?

Jones recorded the soundtrack for _Scream For Help_, with the assistance
of Page and Yes' Jon Anderson. He has produced Mission UK and his daughter
(Jacinda Jones), as well as a group he referred to as "industrial flamenco":
La Sura Dels Baus. He has done string arrangements for Cinderella's
_Heartbreak Station_ and REM's _Automatic For The People_, and appeared in
Paul McCartney's movie and soundtrack for _Give My Regards To Broadstreet_.
He appeared on stage with Plant once in December 1983, during the _Principle
Of Moments_ tour. He has composed for and performed with the early music
ensemble Red Byrd. He appeared on and assisted with Ben E. King's reunion
tour and album. He professes his interests to be in keyboards and dance
music, rather than rock.

Plant has released 5 solo albums--_Pictures At Eleven_, _The Principle
Of Moments_, _Shaken 'N' Stirred_, _Now & Zen_, and _Manic Nirvana_.
In addition, there is a _Little by Little Collector's Edition_ EP.
He was the vocalist for the Honeydrippers' only album, which also featured
Jimmy Page on "Sea Of Love" and "I Get A Thrill." He has appeared on the
_Porky's_ and _White Nights_ soundtracks, and also an album of Elvis covers.
He contributed vocals for the song "The Only One" on Page's _Outrider_.
He is reported to be at work on his sixth solo project, though rumours that
guitarist Doug Boyle is tired of touring have surfaced. And, of course,
he did a Diet Coke commercial. Rumours of a relationship with Canadian
singer Alannah Myles were true. He is currently not married, and has
2 children (Carmen and Logan).

Page released the soundtrack to the film _Death Wish 2_. He has jammed
extensively, with (among others) Jeff Beck, Yes, Foreigner, Bon Jovi,
Aerosmith, Poison, Eric Clapton, Ian Stewart, Roy Harper, Alexis Korner,
Robert Plant, The Beach Boys, Jaco Pastorius, Solid Ground, and even
Harry Connick, Jr. He appeared on albums by Willie and The Poor Boys,
Stephen Stills, and Box Of Frogs (an ex-Yardbirds reunion). He teamed up
with Paul Rodgers of Bad Company, Tony Franklin from Roy Harper's band (last
seen with Blue Murder) and Chris Slade of Manfred Mann (now with AC/DC)
to create The Firm, which released 2 albums--_The Firm_ and _Mean Business_.
He participated in the British and American versions of the ARMS tour (to
benefit MS) with Clapton, Beck, Steve Winwood, Bill Wyman, and other
luminaries. He guested on two tracks from Plant's _Now & Zen_ album,
"Heaven Knows" and "Tall Cool One." And he released a solo album entitled
_Outrider_ with Jason Bonham on drums. He is married and has two children.

Bonham, surprisingly enough, made it past the grave as the drum track
to Frankie Goes To Hollywood's hit "Relax," as well as being extensively
sampled for rap beat compilations.

Peter Grant is working on the much-lamented Malcom McLaren movie, details
of which are best gotten from our British friends.

Reunions, reunions, reunions...

First of all--as of this writing, Zeppelin is _not_ getting back together.

A brief history:

XYZ--a project combining elements of Yes and Zeppelin. Chris Squire
reports that he has tapes of things that he, Alan White, Page, and
possibly Jones (though no one knows for sure) were involved in. The
project crashed for lack of a vocalist--namely, Plant.

Live Aid--On 13 July 1985, the 3 living members of Zeppelin, along with
Paul Martinez (from Plant's band) on bass, Tony Thompson (of Chic) on drums,
and Phil Collins (who had to fly over after his performance at Wembley)
on drums, appear at the Live Aid festival at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.
They performed "Rock And Roll," "Whole Lotta Love," and "Stairway To Heaven."
Plant was hoarse from 4 consecutive nights of singing and a morning
rehearsal, Page's guitar was out of tune, Collins and Thompson were lost
much of the time, and Bill Graham, who was promoting, was pointing at his
watch all through "STH" because Zeppelin was taking more than their allotted
time. Ten days later, Page joined Plant on his solo tour for a few encores.

Reunion #1--In January of 1986, Zeppelin and Tony Thompson met in secret
in a village hall near Peter Gabriel's Bath studios. Plant handled bass
chores while Jones played keyboards. They worked through "..two or three
things that were quite promising, a sort of cross between David Byrne and
Husker Du." But it was not to be--Plant was not used to having to deal
with Page's eccentricities any longer (he reportedly changed the batteries
on his wah pedal every other song), and Tony Thompson was injured in a car
accident. Plant walked out.

Hammersmith Odeon--17 April 1988, Page joins Plant's tour for a blistering
encore featuring "Trampled Underfoot," "Gambler's Blues/I Can't Quit You
Baby/Since I've Been Loving You," and "Rock And Roll."

Atlantic 40th--14 May 1988--A 12-hour tribute concert for Atlantic Records,
which came to a climax with Zeppelin's performance featuring Jason Bonham
on drums. Jason played well, but the night is generally considered a
disaster. The rehearsal was reportedly brilliant. The evening arrived with
the band better rehearsed than they had been at Live Aid. But the concert
ran late, upsetting Page's always fragile nerves, which caused him to drink
even more heavily than usual. Plant was refusing to sing "STH" up until they
actually went on stage. The sound men for the TV broadcast completely lost
the keyboard sound for "Kashmir." Plant was bumped by a fan during the same
song, and forgot the lyrics to one verse and to "STH" later on. Page's
solos were mostly a disaster. The set list was: "Kashmir," "Heartbreaker/
Whole Lotta Love" (the Knebworth '79 arrangement), "Misty Mountain Hop," and
"Stairway To Heaven."

Carmen Plant--The band played at Carmen Plant's 21st birthday party, with
Jason once again on drums. Set list was "Trampled Underfoot," "Misty
Mountain Hop," and "Rock And Roll." November 1989.

Jason's Wedding--The band also reformed for Jason Bonham's wedding, playing
"Bring It On Home, "Rock And Roll," "Sick Again," "Custard Pie," and Jerry
Lee Lewis' "It'll Be Me." Both this and the previous performance were said
to be outstanding. 28 April 1990.

Knebworth '90--Page joined Plant's band (despite rumours and even the official
set list announcing Led Zeppelin's presence, Jones was nowhere to be found)
for "Misty Mountain Hop," the first-ever Page-led performance of "Wearing
And Tearing," and "Rock And Roll." Page had stood on the sidelines earlier
as Plant's band ran down "Immigrant Song" and "Going To California."

Reunion #2--The following January, the members of Zeppelin met with Peter
Grant to discuss a reunion tour. Lighting and sound companies were contacted,
stadiums were quietly reserved. After badgering Plant in public and private
about the reunion, Page thought he had finally convinced him to go along
with it. Both Page and Jones had expressed varying degrees of enthusiasm
for the idea. But Plant, after agreeing to the tour and breaking for lunch,
came back one hour later and said no. This angered Page immensely, and
given Plant's continuing bad-mouthing of Zeppelin in the press, he set out
to show up Plant. Which leads to...

What's with this Page/Coverdale project?

The project, currently entitiled _North And South_ and slated for a
March release (though this is the 5th date since April of 1992),
features Page, David Coverdale of Whitesnake, Ricky Phillips of Bad
English on bass, and Danny Carmassi of Heart/Montrose on drums. It
is rumoured to be an outstanding album by those, including Jason
Bonham, who have heard it, with complex times and rhythms that hearken
back to such songs as "TSRTS" and "The Ocean." Producers are Page and
Mike Fraser. Further info from Geffen or Page has not been forthcoming.

I saw the Swan Song logo on a non-Zeppelin album!

Swan Song artists included Bad Company, Pretty Things, Maggie Bell,
Detective, Dave Edmunds, Midnight Flyer, Wildlife, Robert Plant, and
Jimmy Page. Signed but unreleased artists include Mirabai and Metropolis.
Bobby Parker was never signed, though considered. Richie Sambora claims
he was signed to Swan Song for a time.

Who is Dread Zeppelin and how does the band feel about them?

Dread Zeppelin are a group of musicians playing reggae, often using Zeppelin
and/or Elvis songs as the material. Their albums have contained progressively
less Zeppelin content. They were, at the outset, extremely satirical in
nature.

Page hates them. Plant loves them. Jones' opinion has not been noted
but is almost assuredly the same as Plant's.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did Page invent bowing?

No. It was suggested to him by a session violinist whose father was the
actor David McCallum, but it had been done before.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is that Jimmy Page I hear on TV?

If you're watching the beginning of "The Wonder Years," the answer is yes.
Again, no attempt will be made to cover the extensive and largely unknown
Zeppelin discography here, but a few significant Zeppelin appearences
include:

_Lucifer Rising_--Page did the incredibly annoying, headache-inducing
    	    	  soundtrack.

_Whatever Happened To Jugula?_--Page and Roy Harper, acoustic.

_Right By You_--Stephen Stills solo album, with Page on 2 tracks.

_Dirty Work_--Rolling Stones, Page on "One Hit (To The Body)".

_Their Satanic Majesties Request_--Rolling Stones--Jones did the string
    	    	    	    	   arrangements for "She's A Rainbow".

"With A Little Help From My Friends"--Joe Cocker's famous cover, Page.

"You Really Got Me," and "All Day And All Of The Night"--The Kinks, though
    	    	    	the band denies Page's involvement.

"Gloria," "Baby Please Don't Go," and "Here Comes The Night" by Them, Page
    	    	    	on guitar.

"Can't Explain"--The Who, Page on rhythm guitar only.

Is Jimmy Page a Satanist?

Jimmy Page is a collector of occult books and paraphanalia. He is interested
in religion and spirituality to the point of considering, in an interview,
"...getting a degree in theology." He was a devotee of Aleister Crowley,
a famous English occultist (and, perhaps, Satanist) to the point of buying
his old residence. He often quoted Crowley, most notably on the runoff
matrix of _III_. So is he a Satanist? He says no, the band says no. There
is no reason to speculate further.

Rumours persist that the band sold its souls to Satan in exchange for
power, fame, wealth, etc., and that Jones was the only one to refuse.
The various disasters which have befallen the band are often used to support
this theory. However, there is absolutely no evidence for this, the band
denies it, and in the words of Zeppelin biographer Charles Cross:

"Rereading these comments, while lying in a room that Jimmy Page, the
person--the human being--once occupied, I can't believe the heartlessness,
the meanness, the utter inhumanity of those remarks. From mud sharks to
pacts with Satan, the public seems to suspend normal human empathy when
talking about Led Zeppelin, accepting preposterous malice of the sort that
would never be accepted if it were directed toward anyone outside of rock
'n' roll. Have you heard anyone describe a successful business executive
as having sold his soul to Satan? Wouldn't we laugh this comment off
instantly if applied to anyone else, anyone working in any other art form?
Can one _really_ believe that a pact with Satan is possible, and if so isn't
_that_ the big story here?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I heard there were backward messages in "Stairway To Heaven".

You're not alone. This rumour has persisted ever since a California
committee of parents and religious leaders set out to prove that rock
music was leading our children down the path to the devil. For reasons
still unknown to rational minds, they decided to play some albums backwards,
and professed to hear all sorts of messages in songs like Queen's "Another
One Bites The Dust," anything and everything by Styx and ELO, Rush's "Anthem,"
the Stones' "19th Nervous Breakdown," Skynyrd's "Freebird," The Eagles'
"Hotel California," and most notably the most-requested rock song of all
time, Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven." A cynic might wonder why nearly
all the titles named were huge hits, just like many wonder why believers
in reincarnation were always someone famous in a past life.

A definition is useful here--"backmasking" is the process of either:
1) recording a message backwards on a tape meant to be played forwards,
or 2) the "hiding" of messages within forward phrases that, when played
backwards, reveal another phrase.

So does backmasking exist? Andy Johns, the producer of _IV_, says that
not only is "backmasking" a myth, but that there was no such nonsense
while he was present. Certainly, since the advent of the "backmasking"
scandal, groups such as ELO and Pink Floyd have used the technique to
poke fun at people who would actually play records backwards. Most of
the bands named in such accusations tend to ignore the outcry, for as
Jones commented in _Rolling Stone_, there's absolutely no arguing someone
out of something they really want to believe. But the idea of backmasking
is uniformly considered ludicrous by musicians and producers alike, and
they're the ones that would be responsible for the process.

Despite the denials of the people involved, let's assume that these
messages do exist. Are they effective? If they were subliminal messages
played _forward_, then scientists agree that the brain could and would
process the information. But scientists are also convinced that the
brain cannot decipher backwards information unless it is specifically
engaged for that purpose. Therefore, even if backmasking _did_ exist,
it would be useless. Plant: "If it worked, every record would have the
backward message 'BUY THIS RECORD' in it!" So much for Satanic intent.

And specifically, as regards "Stairway To Heaven"--there are many messages
that various groups have claimed to hear while playing the song backwards,
but the most uniformly cited is the phrase "Here's to my sweet Satan."
Not all listeners that hear backward phrases are in agreement here, however,
and not even close to all who hear the song backwards hear messages at
all. Many of those who do hear "something" dismiss it as a mere phonetic
coincidence. And few of those who do hear the exact message given were
unaware of the accusations against Zeppelin and "STH" before they listened
to the song. Therefore, overwhelming evidence supports the conclusion that
such messages do not exist, and if they did they would be useless, and
even if they weren't they are almost assuredly accidents aided by the power
of suggestion. But still, this rumour will not die. Perhaps it is relevant
to note that the same committee who found "STH" to be Satanic in nature
also claims that the theme song from the "Mr. Ed" TV show is full of
Satanic messages when played backwards.

(Sincere thanks to the MIT Psych. Dept. and the Boston Globe for assistance.)

39.460Bootleg ReviewTAEC::TANAKATue Jan 26 1993 14:58206
Hi All,

Here's my bootleg collection of Led Zeppelin. I put it on Zeppelin note
conference before. As the moderator, Jim Zappia, left Digital, the conference
doesn't exist anymore. It's a pity!
Anyway, I post it here again.

The rating varies at poor->fair->good->very good->excellent->superb.

1.April Fools Day(Paris 4/1/73)

Excellent sound-board recording although the begining of the tape is distorted.
The performance is very good.

2.Brussels Affair(Forest National, Brussels,Belgium 6/20/80)*

Excellent sound-board recording. The performance is not bad as 1980.
But I feel less magical atmosphere about Jimmy's guitar play.
Plant's voice is a shot, but his desparate singing style is neat enough.

3.Ballroom blitz(London, England 10/12/69 #344)*

The sound quality is not so good.(Fair audience recording.)
The performance not bad, I think.

4.Destroyer(Cleveland, USA 4/27/77 #353)*

Superb sound-board recording. The performance is good.
I think Jimmy's guitar play is weakened just because of drug addiction.
(It is still plenty of punch though.)
Plant's voice is also in a decline, but he tries to sing skillfully with a
lower tone in order to compensate it.(It is succsessfull enough.)

5.Electric Magic(Madison Square Garden, New York, USA 7/29/73)*

Outtakes of The Song Remains the Same movie. The Song Remains the Same and
Rain Song are the same track as official album, I think.
Excellent sound-board recording. Jimmy's guitar is mixed very aggressively!!!
I like it.
Robert's shout at the very beginning of Rock'n'roll is unfortunately out of
tune, but the overall performance is good.

6.Fillmore West 69(Fillmore West, San Francisco, California, USA 1/9/69,
Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, USA 7/28/73)*

This consists of two parts namely Fillmore West and Madison Square Garden.
Fillmore West is the majority as the title designates.(The set list is
naturally very early including As Long As I Have You medley and Pat's Delight.
Fillmore West is superb sound-board and excellent performance.
Nevertheless, the mix is fairly strange.
Guitar, base and drums are surely sound-board, but vocal is just like audience
recording.(They don't match at all.)
Had the vocal been the same level, the disk could have been the earliest
perfect sound-board.
Madison Square Garden is Dazed and Confused only. It is excellent sound-board
and very good performance.(I think this is also an outtake of The Song
Remains The Same Movie like Electric Magic(Madison Square Garden, New York,
USA 7/29/73).)

7.Jennings Farm Blues(Olympic Studios, London, UK 1-7/70 Maple Leaf Gardens,
Toronto,Ontario,Canada 9/4/71)*

Excellent Sound-board Recording.
This is a compilation of Studio Rehearsal and Live.
The performance is good enough.

8.Live in Dallas,1975(Dallas,Texas,USA 3/4/75)

This is a good album. The performance is no problem as 1975.
Superb sound-board recording.

9.Live On Blueberry Hill(Los Angels, USA 9/4/70 #376-#377)

Superb audience recording. The performance is excellent.
At first, I thought it was a good sound-board. But I distinguished it since
audience claps were recorded too closely.(This is unbelievably clear
audience recording.)
I think Plant was at the height as a "hard-rock singer".(I can tell it
because he sang Immigrant Song perfectly at that time while he sometimes failed
in the following years.)
Naturally Jimmy magically plays the guitar to enchant audience.
(It sounds a little bit rigid compared to 1973, but I still love it!!!)
This is a must!!!!!

10.Live at Filemore West(San Francisco, USA 4/27/69 #370)

The performance is acceptable.
Good sound-board recording.(Partially the master tape is spoiled.)

11.Mess Of Blues(Playhouse & Paris theatres, London, England 6/27/69-3/25/71
#381)*

Excellent sound-board recording. The contents and sound source is the same as
White Summer except Whole Lotta Love.(It's taken from BBC ZEP 1971.)

12.Mobile Dick(Mobile,Alabama, USA 5/13/73)*

Excellent sound-board recording, but the mix is not aggressive enough
compared to Electric Magic. The performance is Okay.

13.Upwardly Mobile(Mobile,Alabama, USA 5/13/73)*

This is a sequel of Mobile Dick.

14.Killing Floor(San Francisco, USA 4/27/69 #366)*

This is a copy of Live at Filemore West. The sound quality is inferior.

15.Stairway to Heaven(BBC Paris Theatre, London, England 3/25/71)

Superb sound-board recording. I like this.
This is the same sound source as BBC ZEP, but it contains Immigrant Song,
Heartbreaker, Since I've been loving you, and Black Dog.

16.Stand By Me(Osaka, Japan 10/04/72-10/09/72)*

Very good audience recording. The performance is very good.
Although Plant's voice is occasionally raucous, it is much better than his later
years.Jimmy is just great!!!
Dazed and Confused is not listenable due to production error of the CD.

17.Studio Daze(Olympic Studios, London, UK 1-7/70
Polar Music Studios, Stockholm, Sweden 11-12/78
Fabulous Form, Los Angels, California, USA 6/3/73
Electric Ladyland Studios, New York City, New York, USA & Olympic Studios,
London, UK 1-8/72)

Superb sound-board recording.
This is a compilation of various studio outtakes and Live.
The performance is excellent.

18.Tales of Storms(Budokan, Tokyo, Japan 9/23/71)*

Good audience recording. The performance is excellent.
The overall impression is similar to the abovementioned Stairway to Heaven
(BBC Paris Theatre, London, England 3/25/71) because of the set list and
performance quality.
But the big difference is that audience reaction was directly recorded.
I personally prefer sound-board, but this is an exception.
It was the very first concert in Japan, so they were pretty excited.
I enjoy what they were yelling out such as "Let go!!!!!","You cool, man!!!",
"F**king great!!!" in Japanese.
Actually, a sort of riot broke out during Communication Breakdown at the end of
concert and the performance suspended.

19.Zoso's Back To Rock'n'roll(Metropolitan Sports Center, Minnesota, USA 1/17/75
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 9/4/70
Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Ontario, Canada 9/4/71)

Excellent sound-board recording.
This is a mixture of studio reheasal and live performance.
Maple Leaf Gardens is an exact copy of Jenning Farm Blues, but the sound
quality is much more clear.(Maybe this is the master tape?)

20.Winterland(BBC Studios 6/9/69-6/24/69)*

Excellent sound-board recording.
THis is a studio recording in BBC. It's very interesting to hear it.
The performance is rather rough in comparison with official album, but I like
it!!!

21.White Summer(Playhouse Theatre, London, England 6/27/69 #401) *

Superb sound-board recording. The performance is irreproachable!!!!
It's a radio show live and the hall is not so big.
You can hear angry-young Zeppelin here!!!
A must have!!!

22.Listen to This Eddie Part 1 - 3 (21/06/77 The Forum, Inglewood, California)*

Excellent audience recording. The performance is awesome as 1977.
(Maybe the best in 77?)

23.Plays Pure Blues(Texas International Pop Festival, Dallas International
Motor Speedway, Dallas, Texas, USA 8/31/69)*

Excellent soundboard recording. Killer performance!!!(Off course, it's 1969)
Another must have!

24.Shivers'n'Shakes(Memorial Drive, Adelaide 19 Feb. 1972, Kooyong Tennis
Stadium Melbourne 20 Feb. 1972)*

It is very rare item beacuse there have been quite few boots of Australian
tour.
The sound quality is good audience recording and the performance is very
good.
It was the turning point for Robert Plant. He was different from Stand by Me
of the same year. He managed to hit high-pitched notes. Rock'n'Roll was sang
in the same manner as the studio album. But I feel his voice was getting
weaker(compared to Tales of Storms, 5 months ago) 'cause he made some mistakes
in singing Immigrant Song.

(Note)I put "#xxx" when it's contained in Illustrated Collectors Guide.

I have heard it and I agree with Mike. Plant refuses to live in the past
and does music the way he wants to. I find that his albums stand the test
of time even though they don't leap out and grab you the first time you

I'm also still trying to decide whether I like Coverdale/Page.

I agree pretty much with Buckley.. the more I hear the Plant song, I
    don't like it.

But, the thing with PLant is, yeah he doesn't have to live in the past
and play similar music, that's because he can get different musicians
for every album. Jimmy Page can only play guitar like Jimmy Page.
I think Coverdale/Page sounds *VERY* little like Zep. Page has become
more heavier in his guitar playing, which I like. And Coverdale's
voice is still powerful, while Plant's just continues to fade.

Maybe that's true of the album in general, but I'd sure disagree

    Zep-like on those.

I don't think that sounds anything like Zep. Sure it sounds
like Page's guitar playing, cuz, well, he's Page, but the song
in general sounds different then Zep.

Even in Whisper A Prayer For The Dying, Page goes off into
this Pantera type riff. Zep would NEVER have played that song.

    C'mon Chris...
every single I've heard, including Shake my Tree DEFINITELY
    sounds like Zeppelin.

Also, Zeppelin copped so many different musical styles,
blues, country, etc., that they most likely WOULD have
had something that sounded like the song you mentioned.

Exactly. I mean if it sounds good, and it's full of talent, why knock
it? It's not like they just sound like Zep Zeppelin, but page *WAS*
Zeppelin. That's the point. I could understand if Coverdale started
a band with a bunch of Zep clones, but the fact is, it's
Coverdale/Page... And I think it blows PLant's stuff off the face

Okay... since I'm all in favor of beating dead horses...
    I'll settle this WHOLE thing.

    a) Page is a burned out ex-guitarist that MAY currently be
relearning the guitar enough to sound decent in the
    	studio
    b) It's not a mystery that Coverdale is a Plant wannabe. With
Coverdale/Page, the idea is obviously to recreate Zep. Please
listen to Coverdale using the weenie falsetto to imitate
Plant's Zep work. It's painfully, horribly obvious what the
    	intention is.
    c) Shake My Tree is a ridiculous song. The first single was much
    	better.
    d) Plant's latest single may be lame (I don't think it's bad) but
it's his own music. He knows he's not the Plant of Zeppelin,
and doesn't try to recreate it. He can't sing that way anymore
    	anyway

Come one... this C/P project is a Zeppelin reunion thing, without
Plant, that's all. Doesn't John Paul Jones play bass in the
band? If not, that was the original rumor anyway.
Page is a shell of the musician he used to be. He teams up with
great musicians, and the resulting projects end up being less
impressive than the efforts of the people he works with.

Case in point : The Firm... Paul Rodgers made it work, but it
    	sure wasn't great.

>I personally think Zeppelin worked well because Bonham and Jones could

I have to agree. They were also excellent at following him. There's
one short shot in "The Song Remains The Same" where you can see Jones
and Bonham looking at each other in puzzlement. One of them (I don't
remember which) mouths "What's he doing?" to the other who simply shook
his head and grinned. They stuck with him without missing a beat.

A good friend of mine, an amazing guitarist in his own right, once told
me that he thought that if a band had a bass player and drummer that
were really hooked up, it didn't even *matter* what the guitarist did
over it, it would still sound good. I've seen it happen too.

Page was ok, but it was the whole band that made the sound.

I've heard the new song a couple times now, and I like it. Robert

    Hi,

I was traveling around US last month. I went to Boston then.
I was able to contact Jim Zappia, who was the moderator of the Led
Zeppelin note conference. I was very sad that the conference
disappeared after Jim left Digital in 1992, summer.
Anyway, I met Jim and he looked fine. He is now in some volunteer work.
He was working in London and just came back after 6 month stay.
He said "Hi" to everyone who he got to know through note conference.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have any access to internet or something.
He said that he would have it later, so that we can correspond with him
    again.

Page and Plant today isn't all that bad after all. Give em a break. Compared

low-key after all. THey could have gone out and "re-formed" and the masses would

                 "something" blowfish ??

and the songs they did sound really good. Just heard 4 non blondes
doing Misty Mtn hop. May be worth picking up as long as it isn't another
hack job like the Kiss tribute was.

a heard all the songs howard stern was making fun of on that album last
night :'). he played pieces of 6 or 7 of them at least. also the guy
from atlantic called him up (danny busch or something like that) and
said he didnt care that howard was making fun of it as long as he was
playing it and said there would be a follow up to the album next year
    sometime.

Cracker does a tune also, I didn't recognize the guy singing as being
from Cracker! I forget the name of the song, but they did a pretty good
job on it also. I wish the Sabbath tribute could have been a bit better
as I don't care for some of the versions on the disc....but it is
    overall decent! :)

bad...but not as good as the others.

It is called "Cracked Rear View" :)

The lead singer reminds me a little of the guy from Fine Young
Cannibals who's name I can't currently remember for the life of me!

39.548Peter Grant dies at 63HOZHED::FENNELLA cowboy's life is the life for meTue Nov 28 1995 11:3023
I heard that Peter Grant died sometime last week.

He was the 300+ lb former wrestler who was the manager of the band throughout
their career. On their first tour he drove the station wagon that took them
from gig to gig.

The best story I ever heard was some sailor was hassling Jimmy Page in an
airport - calling him a faggot and pushing him around. etc... Peter grabbed the
guy by the collar and practically lifted him off the ground - looked him right
in the eye and said:

	What's your f@%#ing game Popeye???

If you ever saw Peter that would be enough to make most people pass out from
fear right there.

There's a scene in The Song Remains the Same which shows him in true form. He's
hassling the manager of Madison Square Garden because Grant found some guy
selling unauthorized photos of the band. The group is making probably a half
million from the 6 night stand at MSG and he's worried about not getting the cut
on one consession...
