33.0. "Favorite HM Instrumentals" by HAZEL::STARR (Working for the Clampdown) Fri May 13 1988 12:45

OK, if there can be a note for favorite HM ballads, I can start
    a note on this topic:

                       *************************
                       FAVORITE HM INSTRUMENTALS
                       *************************

There are a lot of killer instrumental songs out there in HM land,
so let's hear some of your favorites. Feel free to include guitar
solos (i.e. "Eruption"), but also try and think of instrumental
    SONGS.

33.1Me first!HAZEL::STARRWorking for the ClampdownFri May 13 1988 12:4910
    OK, I'll start off.

I can't remember the title, but one of my favorites is the opening
music on Metallica's song "For Whom the Bell Tolls" on the Ride
the Lightning LP. Very heavy. Very happening.

Oh, and also Ronnie Montrose "Town Without Pity" (not really a HM
song, but I will still mention it).

    	"Switch 625" - Def Leppard

33.3How 'bout thisATEAM::ALLENFri May 13 1988 13:1610
    	Rush anyone ?

There's a wicked good drum solo near the end of "Working Man"
on the "All The Worlds A Stage" album...
Also, off the live album "Exit Stage Left" there's a song called
" La Ville Strangiato"... Real instrumental song but I'm not sure
if Rush fits in with the HM croud, does it?

33.5Rockin' With Dokken !!!33864::JERRYWHITEFri May 13 1988 13:436
My all time favorite HM instrumental has got to be "Mr Scary" by
Dokken from the "Back For The Attack" CD. I think Jeff C. and Steve
    W. can vouch for me !

        Also:

              Eruption - EVan Halen
              Hammerhead - Autograph
Surfin' With the Alien - Joe Satriani

              Circles - Joe Satriani
              Frankenstein - Edgar Winter

And I LOVE the GUITAR solo in 'Working Man' - one of the best
        that Rush has ever done.

                                                          Shawn L.

Aplogies for my ignorance in who he normally plays for but one
of the finest guitar/intro playing I have ever heard is by a guy
called Frank Marino who on a compilation album I have (yuk) plays
    Johnny B Goode....with b*lls!!!!!

that?

Specialized in doing covers of other bands.

Also on Permanent Waves there an awesome intrumental called "The
    Clouds" (I think)...

Jerry White IS Mr. Scary... Damn guy can go near his Marshall without
running the volume knob off it's template and playing Mr. Scary.

It's a great song Jerry, but gimme a break will ya ? I bet you
played Eruption everyday for a century too !

	RE: Waaay back

Frank Marino was the lead guitar player for his power
trio "Mahogany Rush" from Canada. If you've never heard
him play check it out.. He did alot of covers - Roadhouse
Blues, some Hendrix, etc but he did do alot of his own
stuff. Supposedly (I read this in Guitar Player) he
ate too much of something and wound up in a hospital
which is where he 1st started playing.

Now for me one of the better instrumentals I like is
Judas Priest's "Beyond the Realms of Death".

I like BOC's Live Astronomy too.

I don't know how *metal* it is, but I love Aerosmith's The Movie.

Ever since the first time I heard that song I could really relate
to it. Whenever I hear it, I think how much I can identify with
what the song has to say. It doesn't need any words.

Ok, here's a warped way of looking at it:
    Bear with me, now:^)

My cousin and I are planning on doing a video project about our
lives. It will be like a homemade documentary on ourselves, complete
with music. Mine isn't going to have any dialogue, I don't think,
but I am going to have some tunes in the background that describe
me. The Movie is going to be the last one, I think.

I'm interested in buying some new HM instrumental album(s). I've
seen only one mention in this topic about Jason Becker and Marty

Is there any concensus about how good they are? and maybe which

I'm compiling a tape of HM instrumentals but with one difference.....
they've gotta be covers of Classical pieces. You've heard of heavy
    rock/jazz fusion - there's some great heavy/classical fusion

so far out of my 600 (approx) heavy rock/metal albums I've found...

Bach unto this - Jon Lord (Bach)
Over the top - Cozy Powell (Tchaikovsky)
Difficult to cure - Rainbow (Beethoven)
Mars, God of War - ELP (Holst)
God Save the Queen - Queen (Trad)

Unfortunately the only other I can find is "Hall of the Mountain
King" (Greig) by ELO which although it's got a good guitar solo doesn't
    cut it as heavy rock/metal.

What I'm looking for is the genuine classical stuff - ie. not
Schenker, Yngwie, Randy Rhodes twiddly bits. I dont' want to overdose
    on the Yes/ELP/Nice either.

    Any suggestions?

    As for my fave instrumentals,

    Any Bernie Marsden/Cozy Powell/Jeff Beck/Michael Schenker albums
Sabbath - Fluff, Laguna sunrise, E5150
    Purple - Wring that neck
Gary Moore - The Loner, Sunset
Focus - Hocus Pocus, Sylvia, Focus, etc..
    Scorps - Six string thing

but the greatest has gotta be "Green Bullfrog" by Richie Blackmore
    and friends.

Love Sculpture was a band formed by Dave Edmunds in the late 60's. Their one
'hit' was the aforementioned song. If you have problems finding it, contact

re: .71 That's doubtful, however if you want only certain songs there
seem to be an abundance of the "recording booth" enterprises around,
which have the background tracks for you to sing over. They charge you
a few bucks to record the song with your own voice. I don't know if
the backing tracks they use are the originals (I seriously doubt it) or
even how correct they are, but you might want to check one out. Also,
they have to get those things from somewhere...chances are if they can
    get 'em, you can too.

RE .71, Theres an electronic gizmo on the market that removes vocals
from tracks by taking advantage that theyre nearly always recorded
in the middle of the stereo image. I think it takes the left and
right channels adds and inverts them so the vocals cancel out.
Dunno what its called, but seen it on TV, and in catalogs...

I know they're getting them from somewhere, I'll have to find out
where. When recording an album, don't they lay down the track first
then dub the vocals over it? If true, the record companies have
    to have the masters around.

    Re: Vocal Eliminator

I built one once, along with drums, it nuked the guitar too (which

Well, as far as Van halen goes (and some other bands too), you can just
turn on only one set of speakers and get the same effect. I think its VH II
where the vocals are out one side and the guitar is on the other. (At least
its that way on "Dead or Alive" - I don't remember if the others are like
that...)

Yup, the live version does crank, too!!! Isn't that Peter Wolf he plays
