23.0. "Metal Meets the Movies [soundtracks]" by USHS01::DAVIS2 (Reality? Just say NO.) Tue May 10 1988 14:48

Has anyone besides me noticed the rising trend of including
metal tracks in movies lately? An example that jumps into
mind at present is a RATT video that made a cameo appearance
in "The Golden Child" (when Eddie is breaking into the bikers'
    	house).

Of course, there are examples of even greater infusion of
real music into moves (e.g. "This Is Spinal Tap", "The Song
Remains The Same", etc.), but what I'm really talking about
is metal working its way into mainstream movies.

In the first example (TGC), it is shown as 'biker music'
(not an uncommon use for it in celluloid circles). In
"Hannah And Her Sisters" it is portayed as the music of
    	'coked up punks'.

While it seems to be getting negative treatment in these
examples, perhaps there are more that I'm overlooking which
treat Metal (and its followers) somewhat less stereotypically.
    	Can you think of any?

I also saw most of "Trick or Treat" recently on cable. You can't
discount it's humor value. I don't really think it was intentional
either, that makes it better. Who did the music? (Sorry if I missed
    a prev note on this).

The music for 'Trick or Treat' was done by Fastway (one of my
    favorite HM/Hard Rock bands).

Yeah, Fastway's a good band. I have one of their old ones...don't
remember the title. Has a song called "Say what you will" on it
that I really liked. Have they improved? On that one, a lot of
the songs were...well...what can I say?

23.9More on FastwayHAZEL::STARRYou grow up and you calm downTue May 24 1988 15:3221
The Fastway LP with "Say What You Will" was their first LP.
They peaked with their second LP, "All Fired Up", and at that
time Musician magazine named them one of the 10 best Heavy
Metal bands of all time. But then the bass player and drummer
quit, and they added a keyboard player, and have gone downhill
from there. I didn't like either of their last two albums.

BTW, for those of you who don't know, Fastway was started by
"Fast" Eddie Clark of Motorhead and Pete Way of UFO. But Pete
left the band before the first LP came out, although he does play
on it. The drummer is Jerry Shirley, who used to play with Humble
Pie in the late '60s (he's great on Rockin' the Filmore LP).
The singer is a young guy named David King.

Their sound is very derivitive of the sound of Zep on their
first LP. Very blues and riff oriented. Singer is a cross between
Plant and Janis Joplin (he sort of has a Joplin-lke scream).
IMO, the second album is definitely worth the $5. If anyone
wants to hear it before buying, I'll bring it to the party!

Last night on MTV's The Cutting Edge, they had the director of
a new movie called "The Decline of Western Civilization Part II:The
Metal years" and it is all about the HM scene. Lots and Lots of
live footage of clubs in LA to the bigger bands. She says there
is an absolute killer performance by MEGADETH in the film. There
are interviews with Megadeth, Motorhead, Ozzy, Kiss, Aerosmith,
Wasp, Poison, and Many others. The only one they missed that they
really would of liked was DIO, she says he is the godfather of Metal
and is a very good spokesman of the HM scene. It looks like an awesome
film!!! Has anyone else heard about this film, like when it is coming
out or anything like that. A definite must for any thrasher.

The first I heard about that movie was when I found the
soundtrack album for sale in my local record store. I bought
the album, but have not yet listened to it all the way through.
I have never yet seen the movie listed anywhere in this great
big city, but when I do I will certainly endure two hours of
not smoking just to see the flick (a major concession on my

The soundtrack is good, and amazingly enough, the movie
isn't that bad either. It's incredibly predictable, but then
it was made for the 14-19 audience. Gene Simmons makes a
couple of cameos as a disc jockey, but apart from that it's
    	got a cast of unknowns.

I don't remember anyone mentioning the fact that EVH worked on a bunch
of the soundtrack for the flick "The Wild Life" (I think that was the
title?). It was billed like a sequal to "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"
(none of the same actors) and starred Sean Penns brother (!?). Not an
extremely noteworthy film, but the EVH parts of the soundtrack (all
instrumental) were INSTANTLY recognizable as him.

Here's two other EVH appearances -

Brian May and Friends - an EP with two songs on one side (including
a theme to a British TV sci-fi show), and a long blues jam on side
2, with EVH and Brian trading licks. It's dedicated to Eric Clapton
(you guys know I can't mention the blues without Clapton coming
    into my mind!).

Also he did the soundtrack to a made-for-TV movie that Valerie
Bertinnelli starred in, but it was never released on record. I
don't remember the name of the movie (some sort of drama - she played
a mistress or something like that).

The song on 'Wlid Life' is called "Donut City".

On the EP with May, it is recorded live in the studio with a bunch

.50 should have said that all the girls in the boarding school were

I'm not sure about this, but I think the Lou Gramm song on the ST was
an original. I know the Inxs/Jimmy Barnes song was a cover of an old
Easybeats tune.

I saw the film "Like Father, Like Son", with Dudley Moore and Kirk
Cammeron [sic], this weekend and noticed that it had some good metal in
the soundtrack. There were several Motley Crue songs and a brief
concert scene with Autograph. Not an exceptional film, but
    entertaining.

Anyone see 'Dudes' with John Cryer? It's about a couple of
punk rockers revenging the murder of their friend, and has
a good amount of hard rock, including:

        Amazing Grace - Steve Vai
        Rock'n'Roll Cowboy - Keel
Mexican Radio - Wall of Voodoo
        A song by Faster Pussycat

I saw it, it was about these 3 punk-looking "dudes" who are camping
out in Utah on their way to California, when alluvasudden a buncha
other "dudes" come and beat the hell outta the "dudes" on their
way to California. Oh yeh, in the process of beating the hell outta
the punk "dudes", the bad "dudes" kill one of the punk "dudes" and
steal all the punk "dudes" money. Naturally the sheriff doesn't
give a hiot about the punk "dudes" and wants the punk "dudes" to
get outta town. Well the Jon Cryer "dude" talks the fat "dude" into
getting revenge on the bad "dudes".
So they call the Death star and get Darth Vader to Zap the bad
"dudes" with his super flower gun, and this is really not what the
movie is about so just skip the rest of this paragraph and I will
tell you what happened in this movie. Why are you reading this???
I asked you to skip this paragraph and go on to the next one, please
do it at once. Geez!! go to the next paragraph. I know you are reading
this. See you'd probably already know what happened in the movie
if you would've done like i asked you to do. Instead, we are wasting
time so please go to the next paragraph.
At any rate, they get this superfine babe to help them, get
the guts to go after the bad "dudes". She feeds them, teaches the
Jon Cryer "dude" to shoot and ride horses, and generally acts as
the "token broad ina male dominated movie". Anyways she is played
by Catherine Mary Stewart, killer eyes and a nice bod. The punk
"dudes" are constantly hauned by a vision of a cowboy "dude" and
when they get stoned they find their manhood and chase down the
bad "dudes" and get revenge with the help of an Elvis lookalike
    rodeo clown.
Overall I felt the film was entertaining and a good escape from
all things remotely plausable in this world. I give it a six thumbs
up, but only if there is lotsa popcorn and a large coke.

Hey, just thought I'd mention a flick I saw yesterday. It's called
"Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure" and it's really funny. Check it
out, it's got a good soundtrack and some pretty humorous scenes.

The basic premise is that these two high school kids from San
Diemas(sp?), CA who are trying to form a band (but don't know how to
play any instruments) are assisted by a time machine from the future to
help prevent them from failing history and having Ted sent to military
school in Alaska. (Obviously this isn't ment to be taken seriously...)

My favorite dialog is this one. They travel back to the time of Henry
VIII and are captured in the castle by some "Royal Ugly Dudes".

Head royal ugly dude: "Put them in the iron maiden!"
Bill & Ted: "Iron Maiden? EXCELLENT!"
Head royal ugly dude: "Execute them"
    Bill & Ted: "Bogus!"

I watched the credits to see who did the soundtrack, but I'd never
heard of any of the bands. I think this thing was pretty low budget,
so they probably hired local or unknown bands. I want to get it,
'cause there were some good tunes, it's on A&M.

Fans brave chill to see filming, metal concert
Red Rocks the stage for movie
(Gazette Telegraph--Friday, Sept 15, 89)

"It was terrible.

Bobby black, lead singer for the popular heavy metal group Black Plague, was
in the middle of his mega-hit, "Rock n' Roll Junkie," Wednesday night at Red
Rocks. He had already defied death by reeling down a long cable from the rocks
high above, only to burst into flame when he hit the stage.

But that was all part of the show. It was what happened next that stunned, the
teeming throng of Bobby's fans.

Unexpectedly, Black grabbed at his throat, clutching it as if he couldn't
breathe. He staggered back and forth across the stage, then fell, motionless.
His band didn't know what was going on. The audience, thinking it was an
act, roared. Still, Black lay motionless. His band members surrounded him,
a look of bewilderment on their faces. Then a stage hand appeared. The crowd
grew silent.

Bobby Black was dead.

CUT!

The scenario, played out at Red Rocks Wednesday, was part of a long cold
night of filming by 20th Century Fox for the movie "Ford Fairlane", directed
by Renney Harlan and due out next summer.

The fictitious Black is is played by Motley Crue's Vince Neil. Members of Ozzy
Ozborne's band and Quiet Riot play the part of Black Plague.

The premise is this: In the opening scene, Black dies [sorry Tigga~~] in the
middle of one of his rock concerts. Then it's up to Ford Fairlane, played by
X-rated comedian Andrew dice-Clay, to solve the murder.

The movie also stars Priscilla Pressley as Fairlane's love interest, and
Wayne Newton as Black Plague's sleazy manager..."

[blah, blah, blah...] The article goes on to say how they got the fans
out there by promising them that Queensryche would play at the end of
the shoot. Queensryche came on stage at 2am for a 45 minute set. Only a
few hundred diehard fans showed.

Well, the movie was pretty good, but the 'LA scene' looks pretty
scuzzy to me. For example, this is a sample converation between the
interviewer and two groupies:

Q: What do you like to do?
A: Have sex. All the time.
Q: Do you ever have sex with more than one person at a time?
A: Yeah, we've had group sex three times so far.
Q: How long have you been here?
A: Five weeks.

Nice, huh?

And how *about* Chris Holmes? As his mother said about him:

"He's only an alcoholic when he's awake."

That sort of motherly love just brings a tear to the eye, don't it?

So that's a thumbs up for the flick, a thumbs down for the scene!
I'll take the Boston music scenen anyday!

I whole-heartedly agree with Buck and cat on their views of the LA scene.
Most of the guys in the bands were just dying to tell some story about how
many girls they've been with (and only for groceries or money) or how bad they
are. Save that crap for magazine interviews and scuMTV. Maybe they felt this
was a good time to promote their image, I don't know, kinda silly to me.

I got a kick out of the Miss Gazzari dancer of 1987. For those who have
yet to see the movie, some club has a metal dance contest and the winner gets
the title mentioned above. Anyway, she said it was a great experience and now
that her reign is over, she's excited to continue her "modelling and ...... ahh
actressing career".

About Chris Holmes, all I can say is "good luck", he needs it.

When I spoke with the Director he said that the distributers will

How about calming down a bit, eh? 'Heavy Metal Massacre' is the title of a
movie about to be released! The soundtrack is done by Motely Crue, among
others, and has a mutlitude of rockers starring in the movie. It is a
perfectly legitimate subject for this file!!!!

Hi all you Heavy Metal fans.

Finally saw my daughter's movie "Heavy Metal Massacre". There was
a pretty good turn out for the movie premier.

To be honest with everyone the movie was kind of dumb. It was a
low budget movie and the sound track and clarity of the picture
was not that great. But, not to sound prejudice, the audience felt
the same way, is that my daughter's acting and her role in the movie was
    the best.

If any of you made it to the premier, I would like your opinion

    PLEASE...
the L.A. "scene" is so bogus.

Those bands in the movie were such losers. I was embarassed by it.
I thought Chris Holmes was a riot. Him and Dave Mustaine were
some of the VERY FEW people in that movie that weren't trying to
act cool, or put forth some stupid I-get-laid-20-times-day-in-
    orgies image. What a bunch of low-life shi*heads. I really got a
    kick out of:
those two incredibly ugly fat bisexual chicks
the idiot with pants that had no as* in them
that hermaphrodite-geek-transtesticle (whatever he was) guy with
his face painted in two halves
and the guy that thought he was totally gorgeous, throwing his
    hair back every two minutes
they don't realize that they are all complete losers.

I'm sorry that the movie's people decided to highlight the seedier
part of the scene out there, instead of having the documentary
focused on the more successful L.A. bands that crank out good music.

Who was that other band? There is one band there who has been around
in LA forever, but just aren't good and keep trying to be famous.

The thing about this movie is that it shows the MAJORITY of what metal
is. The good bands that are popular and famous are only about 10% of
the whole scene. There are so many bands in every city that just play
for years and never do anything. It's true, unfortunately it doesn't
do any justice for good metal.

Mustain (and the other guys from Megadeth) were the most intelligent.
I was a little surprised that the guys from Poison came off as good as
they did. I expected them to act like prissy morons, but they didn't
    seem that bad.

It was kind of funny if you didn't take it too seriously.
Unfortunately, there are too many people around that would take that as
total truth and use it as another excuse to put down metal (my wife for
    instance).

I enjoyed the film (thanks Mike!), especially the live footage.
    Megadeth was very good.

Actually Greg, the movie was a sequel of sorts. Note the most
recent was called "TDOWC Part II: The Metal Years". Part I was
about the hardcore/punk scene around the early 80's. I've yet to
see it but it was supposed to be an accurate account of the whole
    scene back then.

I don't know exactly how many people were involved in both
projects but the lady (I forget her name.. Penelope ?) who's idea
it was for the movies, did both flicks. BTW she was the interviewer.

I was expecting something more realistic. Maybe it was, though.
    How embarrassing.

I've never seen TDOWC: Pt I (the punk one), but I heard it wasn't very
complementary to that scene either. Donno how realistic it was, but if
this one (Metal Years) was any indication, I expect that it was not
    terribly realistic.

For myself, I didn't think Metal Years was realistic, but maybe I'm

That's too bad, there was some good stuff later in the film.

Overall I'd have to say that they really went out of their way (maybe they
didn't really *have* to...) to make sure that most of the people featured
in the movie seem pretty pathetic. Seemed like only a few of them came off
with any intelligence whatsoever, which is pretty sad.

If that's how life in the metal scene really is (only concerned with partying
and sex) then I've somehow missed it.

Gee, and I thought I was a real music lover...

    Terminator II review.

Action - Lots! Makes up for no good breast shots.
Humor - Some good Arnie lines, a couple made me spit popcorn on da kids
    in front of me.
Special Effects - Great! The liquid metal terminator was great.
Nudity - Just a shot of the bad terminator's glutes.

Overall I give dis flick a 97/100. The bad terminator special effects
are great! He just keeps coming! Sara Connor is kinda wierd but who
wouldn't be after what Arnie put her thru in da first one. Arnie is
great! Who sez he caint act? Little John Conner was kind_of a punk but
with a mom raving about the end of the world who wouldn't be. This
flick ties in great with the first terminator and is much better IMO. I
don't wanna give any of it away so I'll end here. A MUST SEE!!!

If you don't listen to Z-Rock, you missed out again last night. They
were at the Hollywood premiere for Bill & Ted's sequel. Lots of stars
were there and judging by all the artists they interviewed, this is
going to be one hot soundtrack.

Of the interviews I heard, these were the most interesting:

Steve Vai did a song for the movie. He said he's been taking it easy
since coming back from the Whitesnake tour, but recently started
producing Thomas McRocklin. Thomas is an 11 year old version of Steve
Vai (I'm serious the kid wails) and also played him in the "Audience is
Listening" video. He's put together a band of 11-12 year olds and as
Vai said, "...you'll be surprised at how great these kids can rock!"
Then the dorky dj asks him to teach him to play guitar. Z-Rock played
"Erotic Nightmares" after the interview. Not many stations play that
    tune!

Ronnie James Dio confirmed that he is rejoining Black Sabbath and they
will start working on a new record in the fall, as soon as the legal
    stuff is ironed out.

    Machine head - My Misery
    Megadeth - Diadems
    Melvins - Instant Larry
    Rollins band - Fall guy
    Biohazard - Beaten
    Sepultura - Policia
Filter - Hey man nice shot
    1-800-suicide - ????? (Some rap band probably ?)

All tracks are great, but I have a slight preference for Pantera,

a local radio station, armed with plastic Uzi's, and force the

And most of the movie deals with the situation inside the radio

I liked it. Quite funny for the most part. Adam Sandler is
Adam Sandler, so don't expect much. The rest of the cast is

The worst part is that it will have more content than the Richard
	Jewel movie...
23.283Had high hopes for this one.POLAR::TYSICKChasing the tail of DogmaTue Feb 18 1997 09:4411
Well I checked out the "Escape from L.A." soundtrack the other night
    and didn't care for it.

I really haven't given it a chance and will make one or two more
attempts at listening before I finalize my decision.

Some of the artists are TOOL, Ministry, Orange 9mm, Stabbing Westward,
White Zombie, Toadies and Clutch. I guess the songs suit the flick (in
the flick) but suck for just kickin' back and listening to.
