142.0. "Kix" by PLEXUS::V5REGISTRAR () Mon Jul 11 1988 21:59

I was walking along the Hampton Beach last night and I heard some
kids cranking Kix (Midnight Dynamite). It reminded me of what a
good band they are and how much I really like them.

    Anyone else into Kix?

For a while there they were around at Cellar-brations at least every
2 or 3 months. Haven't seen them for awhile. I don't know how
long it's been that they have been saying their new album was coming
    out any day now...

I lost the tape, but it was one tape I could listen to day after
day without getting tired of it.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned them yet, or have they?

    Well, well, well!

I knew there was a former KIX out there. I use to listen to
them but my tape deck ate my tape and I couldn't find it again.

My favorite song by them is "Body Talk"

How's about "Ring Around Rosie", off of the "Johnny Be Good" soundtrack
(which I might add is all around COOL!)? What a killer song! Anybody
have any information on this band? I just heard of them a few months
ago, but apparantly they have been around for a while...

I just bought their new album "Blow My Fuse". I wasn't impressed.
After hearing all about them, and seeing how big they are when they
come around here, I expected more.

Their is nothing new or original about this album, it's a mix of
Great White, Ratt and probably a couple others, not new or exciting
at all, I predict failure in a big way...

Not to mention they are unjustifiably high on themselves. When they
played Cellar-brations they acted as if they couldn't be bothered.
I figured "Just a 'rocker-attitude' type act". No, that's them.
I saw an article in Hit Parader [I think] saying how pissed off
they are at the "rock scene". Something about "How hard they work
    and they haven't gotten anywhere"....WRONG ATTITUDE...Insert BIG
kick in the a** <beep!> here.

it's disgusting. Also, guys, get a real name.

I saw one of their videos on MTV (I think it was on Blow my Fuse),
anyway, I wasn't too impressed. I didn't see the very start and
spent the whole time trying to figure out who they were. Before
the end, I'd concluded that the song was recorded in the late 70s,
it sounded that dated. If that song's indicative, I'd say they
    need some fresh ideas.

I just heard "Blow My Fuse" on the HBBall (can any of
you tell what I do on my Sunday mornings?!).

I remember some of you saying that they lacked originality
and whatnot, but I have to present the other side.

I think they're good. They may not be the BEST band
around, but they sure as hell aren't the worse. I can
get into the music and I think that while they may not
be a HEAVY metal band, they're at least a good Rock'n'roll
band. I was tapping my foot once in awhile!

for some reason I bought Blow My Fuse yesterday...
something just came over me, either that, or I forgot to
put the tape back when I had made my other purchase decisions...
I'm sure I'll listen to this album a couple times, but
it's nothing I'll be getting excited about.

OMIGOSHK OLEEVG!!! This band has got to be king of
    RIFF RIPOFFS!!!

I'm talking about the album "Blow My Fuse"

listen to these tunes, and see if you don't agree:

*Cold Blood* - intro is DIRECT copy of Lil' Devil by the Cult,
the chorus is "when it cools off, you tease it"
etc, just like "If You Want Blood" by AC/DC.

*She Dropped Me the Bomb* - ripoff of that AC/DC tune, you know
the one that goes "What do you do for money, honey"

*Red Lite, Green Lite, TNT* - intro is a copy of Communication
Breakdown by Led Zeppelin, in a
    				different chord.

/Motorbreath...they're so obvious, might as well be sampling

    Another one!!!

The first git riff on Blow My Fuse (the song) and a lot of the
rest of the song is ripping Who Made Who by AC/DC.

    Oh, ok...so it's not me.

    OK, slight nit attack here:

Rhythmically, its very similar, but to say `it's a direct copy' is too
    strong a statement!

The _Wild Flower_ intro is B5 B5/A B5 alternating...the Kix tune plays
G5 for the intro, and at a slight faster tempo. So, in essence it not
    a `direct' copy...

I can't beleive all this negative feedback. Give these guys a chance.
They have been doing to club circuit for the past f**king five years.
Blow my Fuse is not their only album. It's their newest but by far not
their best, they have three other albums that are funky, and make yah
wanna crank it up and dance. I don't see how anyone could have seen
them at Narcissus and been disappointed. You mean to tell me you sat
still!!!! None of you guys think Steve's harmonica playing is orginal,
what other HM bands use harmonica. Not A H*ll of a lot. ( please don't
use Extreme as an example. If I'm correct they only use harmonica in
one song. Can't think of anyone else except new Michael Monroe. I'm
really dissapointed in the response. I've seen these guys about 30
times and never once walked away dissapointed.

One curious thing I noticed is that the guy that wrote all the songs
(Donnie Purnell, the bass/keyboard player) didn't write them with the
band, but with other people. There's only two songs that have him
listed with other members of the band, but several others credit other
    people too.

T.Rhodes (Probably Taylor Rhodes, from the "Thank you" section)
    J.Palumbo (Probably John Palumbo, " " " " )

    gh,

I think you'll like the new stuff. It's (obviously) more commercial,
but it still has that raw edge to it! It'll be interesting to see who
did the writing on this album, cuz it sounds different that the other
    stuff written by Donnie P.!

Hey GH...you know how like the KIX guitarists have like a wall of
Marshalls, topped off with vintage 50wt heads? Well...here's the
dirt...they had all the vintage heads up there, and in their racks, but
there were some hidden goodies abounding: Ronnie "10/10" was using a
Peavey (bleck...I know they have an endorsement!) VTM60 ito two
Marshall 4x12s and Brian "Damage" was using his trusty Mesa/Boogie MkII
head into two 4x12s! The bassist was using all Peavey stuff. Also
looks like they have picked up a Paul Reed Smith endorsement!!! A few
PRSs came out in the show with both git players, who usually stick to
    their Gibson LPs!

Neither guitarist had anythig in their racks other than Conn Strobo
    tuners!

    Interesting equipment info, thanks.

I've been seeing PRS ads with Brian "Damage" for awhile now, so I
figured he was playing them. I played one that a friend of mine has
awhile back and thought it wailed.

Big surprise that Ronnie's using a Peavey though. I've only heard one
once before, the guitar player in some really terrible local band up in
Denver was using one. Even though I'd heard people raggin on those
amps a lot before, I didn't think that one sounded all that bad (even
though the rest of his band "inhaled deeply", as it were).

Personally I think I'd rather play with the vintage Marshall 50watters
then either a Peavey or a Boogie. But then again, I was getting a
pretty good tone outta Coops GK the other night while my Kitty/MP-1
stiff sat around there powered down, so what the heck do *I* know,
    right? JMHO anyway...

They played a lot from it, and the stuff Really REALLY rocked!!!
The new songs are a combination of styles from Midnight Dynamite
    and Blow My Fuse.

KIX knows how to put on an awesome show. From start to finish, they
band rocked with finese, style, but not without mucho gnads!
Highlights of the show -- Cold Shower, For Shame, Hot Wire, Cold
Blood, Blow My Fuse, and some new ones from the new album I forget the

    RE: Goofy-bass player

Yeah, it's his band...he formed it, he writes 80% of the tunes, he does
all the high background vocals, etc.

He's actually a good bass player. his sound gets lost in the big
arenas, but I could hear him loud and clear last night, and his playing
is right on, even with all that spinning and stuff he does.

He's like Angus Young who plays bass!!
    ;^)

One thing, the KIX dudes are starting to look REALLY OLD. Like 30s
material. The close proximity showed their age. Still, the show was
flawless, and I had a GREAT time!

wendy o and I were directly in front of the stage, right on that part
where it rises up about 6" from the pit.

    >one thing that threw me though...they went on around 11:20-11:30...i
    >figured they'd go on about midnite which is usually when the headline
    >band at the channel goes on...so i was pretty pissed that i missed about
    >10 minutes of the show....

and rightly so, the opening of theset was great. It started with blue
lights bathing the stage, then Brian "Damage" rips into the beginning
of HOT WIRE, and this quasi-high voltage cable breaks loose from
lighting rig and starts whiping around the stage, spewing sparks and
such. twas pretty cool. Then the rest of the band runs out/chimes in.
Steve Whitman was the last guy on stage, and he walked out with a mic
in the shape of a lit stick of dynamite (as on the cover of Midnite
Dynamite)! He sang the first song with it burning away.

    >what song was it that the lead singer got paraded threw the audience...

Depends on where you're at, Friz. SR has attitude for days, KIX is

Amongst my latest round of purchases/listenings was the latest Kix album. To
tell you the truth, I don't see what's so special about this band that
everyone loves them so much. I thought they were ok, but nothing great - sort
of reminded me of a second-rate AC/DC clone.

Maybe the earlier albums are better than the latest???

BTW, in the book 'Stairway to Hell' (the Best 500 HM albums of all time), the
first Kix album comes in at #5. And there are four Kix albums in the Top 100.

They are a GREAT live band with a good sense of humor!

>Maybe the earlier albums are better than the latest???

Depends what you think "better" means. Their first two albums were
    released in 1981 and 1983 respectively...and sound very "Cars"-ish...
with lots of quirky synth-pop tunes ala 'the skinny tie punk/pop era'.
It wasn't until the 1985 release of Midnight Dynamite that the band
lost the keyboards, cranked up the Marshalls, and got nasty!

Buck, who thinks their last 3 lps are their best

The new one is the first album that has a real heavy AC/DC clone sound.
They had a little of that influence before, but didn't sound as much
    like them as this album.

My picks would be Blow My Fuse, Midnight Dynamite, Hot Wire, Cool Kids,
    in that order.

Last night's KIX show was RULIN!! Ask /k...this band improves with
    every gig!!

The only drag was their set was noteably shorter than most. I always
see their "first gig of the tour" at the Channel, where they play for
almost 2 hours, to 'test' material to the audience (cuz they say Boston
gives they a true reaction as to wether they really like what they
    hear or not).

They only played 'hits' last night..."Ya Ya Ya" from KIX, "For Shame"
from COOL KIDS, "Cold Shower", "Sex", and "Cold Chills" from MIDNIGHT
DYNAMITE, "Cold Blood", "Don't Close Your Eyes", and "Blow My Fuse"
from BLOW MY FUSE, and "Hot Wire", "Hee Bee Jee Bee Crush", "Girl
Money", "Same Jane", and "Tear Down the Walls" from HOT WIRE.

I missed tunes like M.D., She Dropped me the Bomb, Red Light, Green
Light, etc. The singer, Steve Whiteman, is a great front man...they
guy is an absolute riot. I think they enjoyed their "Narcissus"
