374.0. "Scatterbrain [formerly Ludichrist]" by USCTR1::KGALLANT (Love at first sin...) Sun Mar 25 1990 20:23

Has anyone heard of a new band called "Scatterbrain?"
They were described as "Metallica meets Cheech and Chong"
by the dweeb-master of the HBB (Riki Rachtman).

They just released their debut album called, "Here Comes Trouble"

They've redone Cheech and Chong's "Earcache My Eye"
They're also performing a heavy metal rendition of
    	Mozart's (foirgive me I don't know classical stuff) (?)
    	sonata #3.

Annnnnnd... "Down With The Ships" has got all kinds of ripped off
guitar licks. Supposedly alot of Zeppelin, "Walk this Way"
by Aersomith, "Seek and Destroy" from Metallica and even the
    	Woody Woodpecker theme.

This other song called "Don't Call Me Dude" starts off like
	a 50's doo-wop type tune .

Sounhds like it could be a funny tape.

Yeah, it does sound like it could be good ... although I don't
know why anyone would re-do "Earache My Eye".

Not that I don't like the song, but I really don't see the
point ... a little bit of music mixed in with a comedy rout-
    	ine.

Scatterbrain used to be Ludichrist. Their label asked them to
    change their name.

I saw them play at Northeastern a few months ago with 24-7 Spyz...
they were pretty good. A friend of mine has their new release and
highly recommends it to those interested in funk-thrash stuff.

Dude, what's the name of the album? Just Scatterbrain?

When I saw you classify them as "progressive-funk-rap-wicked talented
metal" I said to myself "self, you should check this band out"
then when you said they reminded you of RHCP.... well.

    /Motorbreath...will check this band out!

    FYI...

The cover artwork for "Here Comes Trouble" is by Robert Williams.
He's did the Guns 'n Roses cover-work that was banned.

I don't believe the Scatterbrain piece was commissioned.... I know
    the GNR's one wasn't.

I called the Milford Strawberries before I left last night
and asked them to hold their only CD copy of "Here Comes
Trouble" for a half hour or so, and they did.

Like Pete said, "Sonata #3" is fantastic!! Some great guit-
    	ar work in there.

"I'm with Stupid" sounds like it has some Iron Maiden-like
    	guitar work at the beginning.

"Earache My Eye" is done quite well, but for some reason I
like Cheech and Chong's version better. Even though Scatter-
brain's version is put together (arranged) better, I still
like the way Cheech and Chong did it.

"Down With the Ship" is a remake? Did they do it the same
way the last time, or is the "sampling" new for this vers-
ion? After listening to it several times, this is the list
of songs I heard pieces of:

BTW - Pete, which Iron Maiden song was sampled? I heard a
couple drum parts which I couldn't identify ... is that one
    	of them?

[and the blues lick at the beginning sounds like Robin Trow-
er or Eric Clapton ... not sure]

I'll have to give it a couple more listens. I scanned through
once, then listened to the whole thing once, and then went back
and listened to the stuff that I remembered caught my ear in a
    	good way.

This album is good, but strange. Well, I say strange ... but I
don't think that's the right word. If you're looking for an al-
    	bum that's straight-forward rock'n'roll then this isn't for you,
because there are some "twists" in this album ... and all the
songs don't sound the same, nor are they even the same style.

	They're rap, they're thrash, progressive, they're funk,
	they're...they're nekked. :-)

Scatterbrain rocked the house at Green Street's Saturday
night. Definitely, by far, the best performance I've
	seen in ages!

Glen (guitar) and Guy (bass) raged onto the stage in their BVDs
(God help us!) Not only is Mike (drummer) the kind of guy you'd
like to die for (sorry, female bias, I was dying to run my
fingers thru his hair) but he WAILS on the drums! (Not to
mention he was fantastic in his skivvies as well). Definitely
by far one of the best drummers I've ever seen live.

They played just about everything off the "Here Comes Trouble"
album, with _Drunken Milkman_ finishing off the encore after
a Zepplin cover.........Don't ask for Pink Floyd, WWWAaaaaaa....
gotta give 'em credit for trying! :-) (so much for taking
requests, eh?)	It was a short set (five bands that night)
unfortunately, and the crowd was begging for more!!

They're creative, they're talented, they're having *FUN* on the
stage (no, posuers, thank you.).........definitely envokes
visions of RHCP in my mind, but undescribably better.

If you think Sonata #3 was amazing on vinyl.....it'll leave
	you breathless live.

Unique, innovative, alive..........how quickly they've become
#1 on my to-play list. All I can say is MORE! I want MORE! :-)

The Living Room....Tuesday night (15th). (And somewhere here in
Mass tonight, but I didn't catch where).

Motorbreath, I wish I'd known, I was on the guest list with a +1.
I went by myself, so it went to waste.

	Anyway. EXCELLENT SHOW!

Tommy Christ flew onto the stage in a chicken outfit, complete
with red hose and a beak. They opened with "I'm with Stupid" and
rocked on from there. I spent quite a bit of time before the
show talking with the (gorgeous) drummer (Mike, I think?).
He was wicked nervous, but you wouldn't know it the second
they got on stage. They have GOT to be one of the ALIVE
groups that I know! (I'm just glad they didn't perform in their
	underwear this time).

They played everything, I believe, off the "Here Comes Trouble"
album, leaving "Dude" for the first encore. They had a couple
great new songs that they threw in every once in awhile, much
like the stuff off Trouble, but each with it's unique sound.
One called "Grandma", I believe, and the other one I can't remember
the name to (hey! I was into the show, whatya expect!?! Plus,
you know how I am with remembering ANY names of songs! TERRIBLE!)

They had me rolling on the floor laughing when Tommy ran off stage with
his legs crossed (as he put it, he really HAD to go!), and they
took over, ad lib.... Each trying to out-do the other, of
course they always seemed to never quite get past the first
few notes before they didn't know what they hell they were playing
	anymore. 8-)

There was nothing from the Ludichrist era at this show. Perhaps
they're leaving that in the past, because there wasn't anything
at the last show either. I would have LOVED to hear "Green
	Eggs and Ham", though.

First encore saw a change in clothes.... They came back as
cheerleaders in letterman's sweaters. "Dude" rocked, but the
highlight of the evening was the second encore when they came
out dressed to the hilt as women....Tommy, outfitted
as a nun, rendered a unique version of "I'm a Sweet
Transvestite" that had the crowd in tears from laughing so
	hard!

Last song of the night, as expected, "Drunken Milkman."

I don't know how to exactly express how ALIVE the show was, after
three depressing acts before them (Syzygy (?) was okay,
Tommy Gun has a lot to be desired, I don't even remember the
name of the other band) they simply tore the place down!
Considering when I saw them last time at Green St Station, hardly
anyone was there and they were driving a beatup old van....this
time they PACKED The Channel and drove off in a deluxe tour
bus...... I'll look for them to "make it" in the footsteps of
the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Scatterbrain is BETTER!

My opinion....look for these guys cruising to the top fast if they
keep up the energy and power in their music that they've got

    	SCATTERBRAIN RULES!!!!!!!

I've not heard any Ludichrist material, but I hear their thrashy
    influence in "Here Comes Trouble."
A couple of their songs on HCT are OBVIOUSLY VERY strongly
RHCP influenced, but there are countless bands that also think
RHCP is hype, and are copying their style as well.
No tarnish on them for that, though, every song on this LP is
    GRRRRRREAT!

When you see them in concert RHCP doesn't even come to mind. It would
like saying that two HM bands are the same just because they both
    play HM.

Scatterbrain roolzzzzzz....... (Not to mention their drummer is the
    lust object of my dreams).

You cannot compare RHCP to SCATTERBRAIN just because 'brain
emulates RHCP's style on a couple songs.
See RHCP in concert, and after you wash off the flash
burns, and you're not in traction anymore from slamming your
head to Chili sex-FUNK, you'll see...

I was very curious to listen Ludichrist (Scatterbrain) after reading all the
good things here and in EHM. Finally I listened this weekend "Powertrip".
It's an excellent album and I'm very impressed by the creativity of this band.
"Powertrip" is heavy and thrash/speed oriented. But the thrash is of very high
quality with many speed metal variations and also some funk and even rap.
Because of the thrash aspect, the album is not for those who completely dislike
the genre. But if you like speed metal, you'll like even the thrash songs which
almost always turn into speed metal (or at least have some great breaks).
The album contains also two very fine covers: one is a famous piece (2 mins.)
from the classic opera "The barber of Sevilla" (T.B.O.S) and the other
Iwo Jima. TBOS is only instrumental and really surprising (no thrash). A
favourite track.
All the 13 songs are excellent (including one rap). When they thrash they do it
with an energy similar to Nuclear Assault. Fine singer and fine (and fast)
instrumentals with outstanding drumming.
Well recommended to speed metal and heavy thrash amateurs in search of very
creative bands. Now I'll intensify my searches in order to grab their last
album.

I finally got "Here comes trouble" and listened it. It is very creative
and surprising (I was with "Powertrip" still in mind). Different from
"Powertrip" (which was thrashy) but keeping the originality (including
the cover of classical pieces). I like it (even it's less heavy than I
expected) and I think it's a progress since "Powertrip" time.

There are only two guys from the original Ludichrist in Scatterbrain, I
believe (lead singer and one of the guitarists).

And I've never heard a Ludichrist song played at a Scatterbrain show.
I think the intent with Scatterbrain was to create a new/different
    sound for the band.

Re. k

This explains the changes in style. What I remarked in any case it was that the
drummer from Ludichrist (a very effective one) was not in Scatterbrain. But
the new drummer is also good. I relistened yesterday HCT and I enjoy it even
more. If I have the occasion, I'll buy "Powertrip" also.

live to appreciate them even more. I've seen them twice and would
pay just about anything to see them again. I have so much FUN at their
    shows.

(Not to mention that their new drummer is GORGEOUS.....I'd definitely
vote for him to be one of the most gorgeous guys in HM.....(sorry Rob,
    even better than you))

I think they are all very good in Scatterbrain. The difference in the
drumming speed is explained also by the fact that Ludichrist was
playing more thrash than rap/funk. I've seen HCT selected amongst the
best albums of '90 in Metal Hammer.

Powertrip album (Ludichrist era) contains already all the inventivity shown in
HCT but Powertrip is very thrashy (but good quality).
The Barber of Sevilla from Powertrip is even a little better than Sonata #.

    	"Scamboogery" - Scatterbrain

Musically, I'd say it's as good as "HCT" ... these guys know how
to play their instruments. But I don't think it's as "fun" as
the 1st album. I mean, there's a few songs that are humorous,
but overall it seems like they got a little more serious.

My favorites: "Sonata [something ... 9/11]" [Mozart], "Tastes
Like Chicken" [advertisements], "Swiss Army Girl" [including
a yodel by a Drill Sergeant], "Hey Bartender".
