661.0. "Testament" by GLOWS::SIMPSON (Why are you still up?) Mon Sep 11 1989 08:08

Okay, one more and then I sit back and snooze...
Nmae of this group is Testament, and I just picked up
"Practice What You Preach" by them.

Not bad at all! Definite Metallica influence here, folks...

Eric Peterson - Rhythm and Lead guitars
    Chuck Billy - Vocals
    Greg Christian Bass
Alex Skolnick - Lead and Rhythm Guitars
    Louie Clemente Drums

Like I said, you cna definitely hear Metallica in here, might
be a bit of a ripoff, although I still think they sound pretty
decent. Hopefully their sound is more of a tribute than a
    copy.

That does it, my spelling has gone to shot! Shyt? Sheesh!

I've heard two of their albums, "The Legacy' and 'The New Order'.
I prefer the first album, but they are a good band - well worth
    the buy.

    Definitely Metallica influenced!

Testament are cool.... the New Order album is IMO the ballz....esp
    Trial by Fire...great tune.

I've got all three albums....all are good. New order seemed
to show more of a musician type of writing...did that make sense...?

It has more slower acoustic stuff...which is good but the fast
stuf is good also.... I seem to be rambling so Au revior...

I'm a definate Testament follower, I saw them and met them last year at
the channel. If you like Practice what you Preach, I'd definately run
out and get The New Order it's excellent also, there first album Legacy
is pretty good too. Also, don't miss them at the Living Room November
13th They are also playing at the Channel Either the end of October or
early November - DON"T MISS!! if you love the mosh - Kim

I heard a song from the new Testament album on 'BCNs metal show this past
Saturday night. I must say - it was AWESOME! Although I liked 'The New Order',
I thought it lacked something. But this new album sounds like it could rank
right up there with classic bands like Metallica (and I don't way that
lightly!) I mean it - I was that impressed!!!

Can't wait to check out the rest of the album. Also, now I *hafta* go to their
upcoming show!

Hammy Odeon is an old cinema, so you have the stalls, downstairs, which
is about the same size as the cinema in Framingham and then you have a
circle above that. It must hold about 1500, all seated, though.

I listened again this weekend "Practice.." making an effort to listen
it all. I don't know why but it lets me stone cold. Instrumentals
(solos) and voice are ok but the whole music has a bad effect on me. I
listened after it Nuclear Assault, Wargasm and Metallica and than I felt
well again. I think "Practice.." is slowed down thrash at the limit of
heavy. Are their other albums heavier ? (For example I like Metallica's
"Ride.." but I'm much less impressed by AJFA, and "Practice.." reminds
    AJFA.)

I had the occasion to listen a little "Souls in black". There is some
nice accoustic guitar, the overall sound seems heavier than
"Practice.." and the production quality is fine. But I still like
Forbidden's last much more than Testament. I think Testament goes fast
with until the moment the singer starts and they slow down or break
something in the rhythm (it's a pure subjective impression but I want
to realize why I'm not impressed by them as a whole band).
I think the new album will please all their fans.

I went to see Stu Hamm last Saturday night. His touring guitarist is
Alex Skolnick. I've been reading Alex's column in GUITAR and was
anxious to hear what he sounded like. He has chops for days!
661.61I donno...GOES11::G_HOUSEand I might be too far downWed Jun 26 1991 15:3027
I've been meaning to put a reply in here, as I recently picked up
Testaments latest, "Souls Of Black" and had some comments on it.

This is a good thrashin album, but it probably won't get a lot of play
time for me because there are some things that annoy me about it.

First off, I *hate* the guitar rhythm sound. It's like all thin, and
squeeky highendy. I like a good thrash guitar sound, like people like
Metallica and Megadeth get, but this is just raspy sounding. Sounds
kinda like the gross overdrive you get from a cheap solid state amp to
    me.

Second, the guys voice bugs me too. I'm starting to get used to it,
but it reminds me terribly of Dave Mustaine.

Third (amazingly as it might seem) is Alex Skolnick's leads. The first
time I listened to the tape I thought "woah, this guy is smokin, this
is definately the high point of the album", and that's very true.
However, his tone and a lot of his leads sound *very* much like George
Lynch too me (esp. the one on the title track). He sounds like Lynch
might be today if Lynch had been practicing a *lot* since he left
Dokken, Skolnick definately smokes him. I just wish he had a little
    more original sound, ya'know?

I probably won't buy any more of their stuff...

I think Alex's GUITAR column is pretty good (so far). From what I
heard on Saturday, and from reading interviews with him, metal isn't
entirely his cup of tea. He's much more versatile than that.

BTW - I heard he's only 21 years old! Amazing.
661.63YeahGOES11::G_HOUSEand I might be too far downWed Jun 26 1991 17:5413
Yeah, the Guitar columns are interesting, that's one of the things that
prompted me to check out the album.

I'd also read in an interview that he has a lot of different musical
interests, I'd hoped to hear a little more of his versatility on the
Testament album, but all I heard was a real good George Lynch clone.

Don't get me wrong, it's not all that bad really, there are several
solos that don't have that Lynch sound to 'em and I like those a lot
better. Skolnick is definately a great player, he plays some of the
smoothest fast arpeggio runs I've heard.

When I saw Alex play with Test on the Test/'deth/Priest tour, I
didn't think he sounded like Lynch at ALL! If anything, I thought
he played a lot like early Vandenburg!

Although, I must say while Alex has chops for days, his solos left me
cold. Super-fast speed scales do not really turn me on (sounded like
    a classier Impelliterri).
661.65Not like Impelliterri at allGOES11::G_HOUSEand I might be too far downWed Jun 26 1991 18:1714
Have you heard the album, Buck? I thought his solos had some substance
(not just scale stuff). Seemed to me like his use of different speeds
in the solos was pretty good too. Like I said in the first note I put
in, his solos were definately the highlight of the album, the rest is
    not that great IMO.

Maybe I need to listen to it again for the Lynch thing, but I know that
one on the title track was *very* Lynch-esq! Maybe it just biased me
so that I didn't give the others a fair shake.

    Impelliterri? Yuk!

the photos I've seen showed the Marhshall and a rack with an Mp-1 in

It sounds to me like he uses the Mp-1 for rhythm sound and the Marshall
for leads, 'cause his lead sound is fat and out in front.

This could add even more to the Testament break up rumor...

Stu Hamm is goin on tour soon and he's taking Alex Skolnick with him.
Stu needed an excellent guitarist, he wanted one of the best....
So he called Guitar World editor xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx and asked him who
should he get, and to Hamm's suprise he said ALEX SKOLNICK. Well after
an audition, Stu said, yer comin' with me kid. Skolnick had said "This

Sure, there are thousands of hot shot guitarists, but not that many of
'em really have much style. Takes more then fast playing.

Marty Friedman in Megadeth is a great example of how a player with a
cool style (and good chops) can really make a band sparkle. They were
ok before he joined up, but completely smoke with him. I think
Skolnick was the same for Testament. They'll probably do fine without
him, but I thought he added a lot to the band.

Oh they also had two bimbos bopping around the stage the whole time.
They gave a speach before the concert saying that there was a lawsuit
so they had to change their name from
Green Jello to Green Jelly, but they said they use a Y with two
dots over it, which is pronounced like an o so although even

It was a long really lame speach! The only time the crowd was into

Well after coming to work jammin out to the 7/4 intro
riff on "Malpractice", I figured I'd look into the Testament
    note after a lengthy absence.
I bought this "Guitars that Rule the World" tape a while
back. On it, Alex Scolnick, ex Testament shredder, does a
funked-out instrumental piece (has anyone heard it?). At any
rate, I got a kick out of the previous note which mentions
Testament and Primus in the same sentence. Why? Because
on Alex's little funk tune he employs none other than Lester

I think "Farm Fiddlin'" by Zakk Wylde is my favorite off of
that one, although I haven't heard it in awhile and should
    	take it out again.

YES!! I knew I must have forgotten a couple of them.

"I Understand Completely" RIPS!! One of the most amazing displays
of guitar work I've heard in a long time, and possibly ever.

Anyone got the new one?!? "Low" I think it's called? I guess
the lead guitarist from Death has filled in where Alex left
off. I can't remember the guy's name from the article I read
in GP, but I do know he's a MB TriAxis/2:90 madman.

661.140Alex still with Savatage?SUBSYS::MSOUCYTue Mar 28 1995 11:347

I thought alex was only playing on the latest Savatage album "Handful
of Rain"? Awesome album as the singer fits much better.....anyways, is
Testament still the way they sounded with "Souls of Black"? :)

I *think* alex is on Low. I just got it yesterday and I think it is
MUCH better than Souls of Black due to the slower time (not speed
throughout it all....) and Chuck's voice is still great on the low end!
I give it a thumbs up. I liked some songs on SOB but I like it slower
and heavier a-la Low. Give it a spin and see what ya think!

661.142lineup of Testament on Low discSUBSYS::MSOUCYTue Aug 08 1995 12:1417

An update to .141 by me.

    Testament is:

    Chuck Billy - Vocals/growls
Eric Peterson - Rhythm/Lead Guitar, backing vocals
    James Murphy - Lead Guitar
    Greg Christian - Bass
    Drum Tracks by John Tempesta

Now this drummer is pretty good! Is he a studio musician or someone who
sat in on this album. And has he done this for other bands? Just
    curious on the latter.

Testament will be playing a show somewhere around here (Mass., U.S.A.)
sometime soon. I got a quick look at the listing at Strawberries the
other day, so check there for the definite scoop.

I saw Testament open for Anthrax a few years ago and they were pretty
darn good! The audience loved them too and tore up the place! 8)

I also picked up a new live Testament thing on CD. This one's
from a recent show (I forgot where...it's right in the damn title
too!!), featuring the new drummer, and new guitarist John Murphy.

All in all, it's a pretty decent recording...even Chuck Billy's
vocals are fairly easy to make-out (I've seen this band live 3x,
and this usually ain't the case!). This guy John Murphy has got
Alex's chops down real good...check out the live rendition of
"Practice What You Preach" for an example.
