                          *DEFCON*

I have recieved only two responses to my offer for a free demo tape.
The band is DEFCON a Metal/Thrash band from Dallas, Texas who WILL
make it big shortly. Songs such as Judas Goat and Arthurs Shadow
are played daily on ZROC, THE ONLY pure Heavy Metal station in
the Nation. If you would like what is soon to become a collectors
item send me your location code and the last week of July I will
    send out the tapes.

To all those who requested Defcon tapes......

PLEASE let me know what you think of the music. It is important to know
what the potential audience feels. Although the band would probably
say EAT SH** to any negative responses (kidding). I will be putting in
a bio on monday and sending tapes out around 7-28-89.

The band said to tell you, "TURN IT UP OR TURN IT OFF"!!!!!! ;-)

Q: How long has DEFCON been together?

A: Well, DEFCON has been in existence since 1985. We have had a lot of
changes to the line up though. Three duummers, two bass players and I
    am the fourth rhythm guitarist.

Q: Whew! That a lot of changes, do you think the present line up is
    solid?

A: Hell yes! We have been playing steady for over a year now and we
plan on being together for a long, long time.

Q: What type of music does DEFCON play?

A: We are definitely a Heavy Metal band, but we play a different type
of metal. We call it Melodic Mosh or Orchestrated Metal.

    Q: What do you mean?

A: Well, in our case Metal was the music we all grew up with, but we
wanted to play a more refined "well orchestrated" version. We listened
(still do) to a lot of the classics. We found that we have a lot to
learn from them in terms of how we can obtain that full "orchestrated"
    sound.

Q: Who do you listen to?

A: Bach, Mozart, Mozart was a real radical in his era, he had balls.

Q: What metal bands do you like?

A: Queensrych, Metalica, Anthrax, Megadeath, the usual line up.

Q: Your band sure looks like a metal band but with your classical
influences it would appear you are not your average thrash band.
What is your message to the world?

A: Everyone get your sh** together and RISE FROM CONFUSION!

    Q: What do you mean?

A: We think the world is in a very confused state. We are following a
way of thinking that is old and dangerous. We were taught to hate our
brothers, but now we are at a crossroads, we can pass on that hate to
the next generation or we can replace it with goodwill.

Q: What are your plans for the near future.

A: We are going back into the studio to cut a few more tracks and try
    to put an album together.

Q: How about a few tracks we can expect to hear.

    A: Return to Form
Life Behind the One Way Glass
       Quest
       Judas Goat
       Words of Wisdom
       Friend or Foe?
       Authors Shadow
       Code of the World Wind

Q: Wher can we hear you in Dallas?

A: Dallas City limits in Dallas or Joe's Garage in Fort Worth usually.
We really play all over the place in Dallas/Fort Worth.

Q: How about a line from one of your songs to close the intervies?

A: Have you ever wondered about the difference
       between happiness and sorrow?

Well it lies betwixt the future and the dreams of the past.

         Slam,
Got the demo yesterday. It rocks! It usually takes awhile for an
album to grow on me, but Defcon won me over straight away. It is
very reminscent of a Metallica/Iron Maiden mix with the best of both.
Do you think you could print the lyrics to the tunes in here? If
this is just the beginning I can't wait to hear what's next!
Defcon can claim a fan in Maine!

I got the tape last night and gave it a listen. I was into it,
but I can't review till a couple more listens.

One side note, though...I was blasting it in my room and my roommate

Actually, I'd hafta compare 'em to Metallica 'coz of the
timing changes in the first song (especially).

They're not as fast as Metallica, though ... so they can't
    	really be called speed metal.

If you're into "audible vocals" then this isn't the group
for u ... some of the lyrics are understandable, but most
    	aren't.

It is good, though ... they have potential.

I was *very* impressed. Sounds like there's some good talent in
the band and high possiblities for "making it".

I don't think anybody has said this yet, but the "sound" made me
    think of early Queensryche.

If I remember correctly, the tape has 2 songs. If it is actually
2 songs, not a few songs run together for the demo's sake, I applaud
the band for writing song that are 3,4+ minutes.

Yes, reminded me of early QR too.

The vocals are similar sounding to Geoff Tates, but also remind me of
Rob Halford (two of my favorite singers!).

I thought the some of the timing changes sounded contrived. Like they
were thinking "Gee we should really put a time change in here to trip
them up". Some songs have time changes that sound natural and fit, but
    one of these didn't.

Overall, I'd say they have a very good sound. My copy has some funny
distortion on the vocals at the start of the first song. Sounds like
it was level saturated somewhere along the line (probably in the
    duplication process).

    Yeah Slam-

Definitely finish that record and tell me when it's done! I'LL

Geez, the only possible complaint I might have is...the beginning
of the first tune could have used more words to build the tune before
going into those mini-insrtumental parts. Like it may be a little
early in the song to go off on something like that. The rest of
the tune was GREAT, I thought!

Definitely one of the best tapes I've heard from bands who aren't
pro (that is, they can't make a living with it yet) this year.

    Thanks Ya'll

We appreciate the input on the demo. The length of song one is actually
about 10 minutes, it is NOT two songs put together for the sake of
the demo. The band has caught flak from radio stations that say the
songs are to long to get airplay, they say we wrote em long, play em
    long!

I have requested a copy of the words and should get them
tonight at practice. I will print (with permission) in this note.

The comments pertaining to QR and Metallica influence are correct, these
are the bands the dudes listens to. But, I think DEFCON has an original
    sound.

Thanks again for the input and we look forward to any and all comments.

This band is excellent! I hear a bit of Maiden in 'em myself. BTW,

I have to agree with the rest, it's very good!

After having listened to it more, the timing changes I mentioned
sounding contrived before don't seem so bad. They are very tight, it's
    a good demo.

Definately a lot of Maiden influence there.

One suggestion...next time repeat the program on the flipside of the
cassette like Metallica does with their EPs. Makes listening to it a
lot easier without having a rewind between every time through.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about his note. I was supposed to respond here,
wasn't I? Oooops!

Well, I did give the tape a good listen. Overall, I was very impressed. The
only problem I had with it was the length of the songs. There seemed to be
almost too many ideas in one song, and I wondered if it would be better to
break them up into separate entities unto themselves. But I also understand
that its the band's style to play that way, and once you accept that, its not
so bad to take.

Good songwriting (although I may slightly agree with Greg, in that the time
changes seemed a little forced). And nice production and 'band sound' also!

I have to listen it some more (the Satyr tape is next on my list, then I'll go
back to both to listen some more), but I think this is the kind of band that
will sound *better* with repeated listenings. (As opposed to most band, which
sound weaker each time around.)

Overall, a definite thumbs up!

BTW, if you want me to submit a tape and package to WBCN (the #1 rock station
in Boston), send it to me. One of my best friend's produces the weekly HM show
there.

I too think the sounds were a bit long, you'd have trouble geting
signed with the songs the length they are. Also, on the tape the
mix seemed very muddy; I could hardly hear the guitar coz the vocals

Not OUR DEFCON......There are now THREE Defcons out.

    1) DEFCON IIII
    2) DEFCON handled by Rudy
    3) DEFCON from Dallas, the best of the lot.

I have heard some of the other bands material, didn't do a thing
    for me.

All are unsigned....The race is on!

THE BOIZE ARE BACK! Demo packs are almost done (finally!) and will be
in the mail to all the records companies A&R people by the end of May.

The boize are back with a vengeance! They are out of the studio with
many new KICK-ASS songs and they are ready to blow your speakers.
Be prepared for new tapes and some pictures in the near future.

So, I have read thru some of the earlier replies and have a question or
    2.

Do they yet have a CD/EP/etc. out?

Can anyone let me have a copy of the tape that the band made? Will pay
for it of course (with real money too)!

You guys missed one badass show on Sunday...........DEFCON tore the
Basemant down, brick by brick! The crowd went beserk when they started
the show with Welcome Home by King Diamond......The entro with Fog and
strobes was awesome.....By the time they went off stage the place was
one big bouncing hairball. A sea of hair, flipping up and down to beat
of the boyz......Geesh, I wish I had hairspray stock!

Finally got a chance to listen to the new tape a few times...

Overall... once again an excellent showing by the band!

		- the sound quality of this tape is definitely
		  better than the previous

		- the addition of the two(?) newer members hasn't
	    	  changed the band's sound/style (good!)

		- fave tunes... "Judas Goat", "Bestial Psychology",
		 		 and "Analytical Assasins"

	        - I see they still like those long songs, eh? 8^)

Thanks Paul! The band is playing 3-4 night a week now. They are talking
to Roadrunner about some kind of tour deal and might be comming to a
club in your town soon. Look for DEFCON on tour this summer!

Anyone else need a tape? The Album is called "IN OUR OWN DEFENSE".
