    disappointed!  H&H is my fav. Sabbath album.  My mother is a Tony

    I also got this album called ATTENTION BLACK SABBATH, its got some
    real old stuff like Iron Man and Paranoid, and  Witch Hunt, Its
    pretty killer. My fav-er-it  Sabbath tune has gotta be Iron Man
    or Paranoid, but War pigs and Mob Rules are also pretty hot.

    Cookster, I have to totally disagree with you there. I saw just
    about every tour of Sab's from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath to Born Again
    and the Born Again show was awful. I didn't think that Gillan really
    fit in, at least not on stage. I thought that the best number they
    did that night was Smoke on the Water. Maybe I was just in a bad
    mood that night because if I remember correctly Quiet Riot opened
    for them. Kevin Dubrow sssssss. Maybe it was just a bad night for
    the band. Coming from another Maiden junkie

    	   My brother introduced me to Sabbath, which is totally
    	off the wall, since he hated metal.  My fave at the time
    	was Iron Man, and for that matter, still is.  That's mainly
    	because I haven't checked them out in years... must make
    	a note to do so real soon.

    I really like the stuff they did with Dio. Heaven and Hell is probably
    my favorite Sabbath album. Ozzy's Speak of The Devil kicks some
    serious butt. Too bad Randy Rhodes was'nt around to do that album.

    Somebody mentioned that the new Eternal Idol album was boaring.
    I have a completely differrent view of that album that should
    be noted here.
    
    The Eternal Idol is one of my favorite albums now.  It's full of
    wicked guitar riffs and excellent songs.  My favorite song from
    this albus is It's a Hard Life to Love.  Great for a saturday morning
    when you wake up from a bad dream.  Puts things back into perspective.
    
    
    I wasn't too impressed with the Ian Gillen concert at the Centrum
    ethier, but I do like the album.  I truly enjoy the song Disturbing
    The Priest off of the Born Again album.
    
    Black Sabbath is still my favorite, and the best part is that they're
    still putting out excellent material.

    The correct title of the song mentioned in 38.16 on the Black
    Sabbath Eternal Idol album is not "Hard Wife to Love, but "It's a
    Hard Life to Love".  At least that's what he's saying on my CD.

    Of course it could mean anything, Ozzy has admitted that all the
    Sabbath Albums were composed and recorded in a Drunken Stupor.

    "Faeries Wear Boots" is by far Black Sabbath's coolest tune.  It's
    the kind of song that's great for us "Not only do I have to hear
    what's playing on my car stereo, but you do, too" types who like
    to crank it with the windows down and the sunroof open.

    (If  I  remember  correctly)  The  song  was entitled, `Led Clones',
    and  sounded  similar  (but  not  completely) to Kashmir by Led Zep.
    Ozzy  Osbourne  was  mentioned  to  have  done  lead vocals on this
    album, but  I  didn't  catch all the details.  Rather descent sound,
    but  mellow  in  comparison to what I've heard before.  Anyone else

    The album is ofcourse the new release by Gary Moore (who I was supposed
    to see in concert on Sun night, but it was cancelled coz of an absolute
    W@$%&R of a drummer called Cozy Powell). The track you mentioned
    "Led Clones" is one of the best digs at bands like Stinkdom Scum,
    who try to rip off Led Zeppelin. Hope that you found this info to
    your liking. By the way the album "After the War" is great. I would
    thoroughly recomend adding it to your collection. 
    
    Still on the Bright side I am going to see The Scorpions & Vixen
    tonight. And the Scorps have been in my top ten list since the "Animal
    Magnetism" tour.

    album  out. . .it's  Gary Moore's, with Ozzy on lead vocals.  Sorry

    Jeez, I don't know about the rest of you peoples but my favorite
    Sabbath albums have to be their 1st and Vol. 4. These guys were
    my favorite group for a while ( from "Master..." to "Sab. Bloody
    Sab." ) time frame (you know YEARS ago). As far as their new stuff-
    I hate to say it but I can't stand Dio (o.k. I hear the shouting,
    calm down) and I bought the album with Gillian (always liked the
    way he sang) and I even listened to "Seventh Star (?)", but I only
    got to listen to it once 'cause my turntable had a meltdown while
    it was playing - oh well! But IMO they just aren't they same Sabbath
    I used to know and love.

      I too like the earlier BS material. However, I saw the Heaven
    and Hell tour in 1980 with RJD and really enjoyed it alot. One
    thing that I remember about this show is that Vinnie Appice was
    on drums. At the end of the show they introduced Bill Ward and
    he came on stage to take a bow. I never did find out why he was
    not playing, that night or maybe for the whole tour.
     On another note, I really like the BS material that Ozzy does
    on Speak Of The Devil. His band covered a couple of songs that
    I liked better than the originals, The Wizard for one that comes
    to mind.

I heard a copy of the new Sabbath record, and its gonna suprise a lot of
you! It is great!!!

Of course, it doesn't even really sound like Sabbath. It's very close to a
cross of Whitesnake and Dio (pretty ironic, eh?). And it looks like Tony
Iommi finally discovered signal processing (I mean besides an Echoplex). 8^)

I don't know who the singer is (it was just an advance cassette with no info
on it), but he sounded just like Dio on one song, and *just* like Coverdale on
another song. (I mean, it was so close, I thought they were doing guest
vocal appearances...).

    Great!  I think that I like the early stuff best too.  But that's
    no slam on some of the Dio era material, as Heaven and Hell was
    at one time one of my favorite albums.  I still listen to it
    occasionally, but a lot of it sounds kind of dated now.

    I didn't mean to say that I didn't still enjoy it, or that it was
    no longer good.  I was just trying to say that it has a dated kind
    of sound, you can identify the time period it was done by listening
    to it.  To me, Heaven and Hell has a very definate late 70s sound/feel

       That's right. Music is like fashions - whatever is "in" at the
    time, and unfortunately alot of the new groups who get signed have
    to sound like another group that is getting airplay at the time,
    or is being pushed hardest by a record company. Thus the same prod-
    uction techniques are used, similar beats, etc... That's how you
    end up with what can be classified as dated. (early '60's, mid '60's,
    late '60's, early '70's, mid '70's, late '70's...etc...) only now
    the time frame for a certain sound is a little shorter - like months.
    Also, top 40 usely depicts a certain sound for an era - it's not
    nescesarily (sp.) what people really want to hear - just what is
    being promoted at the time. And yes, even Beethoven is dated - but
    that doesn't mean it's not good. Well JMO anyways.

      I didn't say Beethoven wasn't good - I happen to own a few albums
    of his music along with Wagner, Stravinsky (sp.), Chopin... to name
    but a few. I can appreciate that kind of music. But whether or not
    LBV was good (or great) or not wasn't my point. Sorry you took such
    objection to it. I've  been exposed to the music business for quite
    a while and i've seen a lot of bands fall just because the weren't
    playing music that fit with the times -it's very unfortunate that
    record companies don't sign artists who's music is a little more
    timeless. But enough on that. Still, in my opinion music can become
    dated. Sorry I riled you.

      I picked up the new Black Sabbath cd this weekend. Its called
    "Headless Cross". The line up this time is;
    Tony Iommi - Guitars
    Cozy Powell - Drums
    Tony Martin - Vocals
    Geoff Nicholls - Keyboards
    Laurence Cottle - Bass
    
     I really like this new effort by BS. My first impression of the
    singer was, Oh no a Dio clone! but after listening to it a few times
    I don't feel that way any more. Musically its really strong, the
    lyrics are ok (a little too heavy on the Devil thing). Iommi does
    some great guitar work and for all you Cozy Powell fans he really
    jams on this album, Don't let his work with ELP influence you.
    Any one else have it yet? and what are your thoughts?

    Haven't picked it up yet - my rep is holding back wth it for some
    reason.

    Yeah, I picked up the new cd and must say it sounds great.  I thought
    it took a little getting used to, but after listening to it a couple
    of times it grew on me.  I'll agree, a little too involved with
    devil lyrics, but all in all a real good album.  My favorite song
    "When Death Calls," there is some serious jammin'.

         WOW!  A Sabbath note!  I just found the Heavy Metal conference 
    and thus just found this note.  I'm psyched!  Black Sabbath is one
    of my top three bands.  I like all of their stuff with the Heavier
    tunes being my favorite.  The new albulm is fantastic.  Whenever I
    need a break from the monotonous top 40 I crank "When Death Calls"
    to put things back into perspective.  I saw Ozzy 2 nights ago at 
    the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland,Maine.  Since I've
    never seen Sab, seeing Ozzy and Geezer together was a real rush.
    My favorite Sabbath albulm would have to be H+H.  My favorite 
    song is Sign of the Southern Cross.  It's so strong!  Has anyone
    heard the albulm from "Blue Murder"?  It's pretty good.  It has 
    a slight touch of Sabbathian influence.  I have most of Sabs material,
    but I don't have Never Say Die, or Master of Reality.  Any rec-
    commendations?  Good?  Bad?  By the way my least favorite album
    is Technical Ecstasy.  Something about it just doesn't do it for
    me.  Has Sabbath printed any lyrics to any of their albums beside 
    the last three?  I would appreciate any and all words I can get 
    my hands on.  Until then watch out for The Hole In the Sky.

    A biased reply from another (old time) Sabbath freak.
    
    For me, their best albums are the first 4 (Black Sabbath, Paranoid,
    Masters of Reality, and Volume 4). For me, that's when there were
    at their best and most creative. Than again, I latched on to them
    when Paranoid came out!
    
    Apart from Sabotage, I'm not too keen on the later stuff. That's
    not to say (apart from Technical Ecstasy, and possibly Seventh Star)
    it's not good stuff. For me, it just doesn't match up to the earlier
    stuff, particularly when you consider the time that early stuff
    was recorded.
    
    In terms of influences (and I don't want to send this note off on
    a tangent here, if necessary we can discuss it elsewhere), I reckon
    most guitarists around are influenced by very few true originals
    (Tony Iommi, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore -- who is greatly
    influenced by Hendrix -- Eddie Van Halen, nad Eric Clapton). Same
    applies to volaists (for example, Ozzy, Robert Plant, and Ian Gillan).
    When all's said and done, Black Sabbath and their contemporaries
    have been GREATLY influencial.
    
    Sleeve lyrics? Well I can only speak here for the versions of albums
    I've bought. All were bought in the UK and most at the time of issue.
    Since then, some albums have been reissued in a different (read,
    cheaper) packaging without the lyrics. Off the top of my head the
    albums I have with lyric sheets of some sort or another are;
    
    Masters of Reality
    Volume 4
    Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
    Technical Ecstasy
    Seventh Star
    Headless Cross

    Well I'll Tell ya By far the New Album is Great "Headless Cross",I
    saw Sabbath June 3rd @ the Orpheum w/KingdomCome, And man It felt
    so good to see all Sabbath Fans go Nutz,They "ROCKED" the New album
    is by far Exellent.and as for Tony Martin (Vocals) he's got an Intense

    UK listeners may want to know that the Radio 1 "In Concert" program
    next week (13th October) is devoted to Black Sabbath. 
    
    I don't have too many details (as the Radio Times seems to think that
    Radio 1 doesn't deserve such things) but it appears that the concert
    was recorded on the latest UK tour in Manchester.
    
    The program goes out between 9pm and 10pm on Friday 13th (most
    appropriate!) right before the Friday Rock Show.

	On 16-OCT, I went to BLACK SABBATH's concert .
	This was the first time I saw BLACK SABBATH .

	Their line was 

		Tony Iomi
		Tony Martin
		Cozy Powel
		Niel Murley
		Geof Nichols .

	The opening tune was "Headless Cross" .
	Main song of this concert was from "Headless Cross" and "Heaven
	and Hell" .

	Tony's guiter is heavy , Tony Martin's vocal is good ,
	Niel's bass is tite , Geof's back keyborads is nice ,
	and Cozy' drum is perfect !!

	I'm fan of Cozy since "Rainbow" .
	I wanted to see Cozy , this night I could see and listen Cozy .

	In Japan ,Cozy's popularity is lager than guiterist (band leader).
	Only Ritche Blackmore is even him .
	So I was happy and very excited this concert .

good. The song I've heard had a strange athmosphere (mystical).

Black Sabbath (no surprise).

    Does anyone recall hearing a story about Ozzy throwing puppies in
    the crowd at a Sabbath show and saying he wouldn't perform any more
    until the crowd killed the puppies and threw them back up on stage?
                                                                      
    The singer in RnR was trying to tell me that this was a true story
    and thats why he can't stand Ozzy.

    	It's a crock.  Like Pete said, the rumor arose after the bat biting
    incident.  Someone started the rumor and it spread like crazy.  Back
    when it happened, I can remember one big-time, radio talk-show host
    in Boston dedicated his show to the possibility of it occurring.  MSPCA 
    people were supposedly gonna attend the show to make sure nothing 
    happened.  Yeah, they just wanted free tickets. ;^)  I don't know
    whether they did attend or not.
    
    	I imagine the rumor hit most cities the tour hit.

    If he actually tried doing that, he probably would of
    been locked up, when me and my friends were going to an
    Ozzy show we agreed if he did throw pupps out to the auidence
    would grab as many puppies as we could and leave as I'm sure
    most of the people would of done the same, but was all a bunch
    of B.S., he didn't even bite a bats head off, 8^)

    	Well, it wasn't deliberate, but he did bite a bat at one of his
    shows.   A fan threw a dead bat up on stage, Ozzy thought it was a fake
    rubber one and bit into it.  He ended up going through the full rabies
    treatment, ie. shots in the abdomen, very painful.  I remember seeing
    him on some talk show after this incident and will never forget what
    happened:  Ozzy was being his usual self, ie. the madman of rock 'n'
    roll when suddenly he turned to the camera and came completely out of
    character.  As a very serious and eloquent John Osbourne he warned the
    viewers about "never, ever biting the head off a bat".  I think he
    learned something about pain during the rabies treatments.
    
    Nevertheless, this incident added to his reputation and unjustly led to
    the dead puppy rumors.  They were a crock of SH*T!

      Yea, I picked it out last night with the new QR. I haven't had
    a chance to listen to it yet. I'll be checkin it out tonight and
    will post some thoughts tomorrow. The title is TYR, and it is pack-
    aged really nice. The disk has to get a vote for originality artwork
    wise. If it sounds like it looks I'll be really pleased.

    In a recent interview with Sabbath, Tony Iommi was quoted as saying :-
    
    "Few People can sing like Ozzy...
    ..few people would want to!".

     Well I listened to it last night, and its OK. Not anything to rave
    about but there are a few songs that I like. I'm still not sure if
    it is just OK or whether or not its just that I'm so impressed with
    the Queensryche that I bought at the same time. Its not that its a
    bad effort, I will say its alot like Headless Cross. I guess I'm a
    die hard, I've listened to Black Sabbath for 20 years now, I always
    liked them and probably will keep buying their stuff. 
     Give me a few more days, maybe I can be more objective then.

      IMHO......I really like this CD! I only liked selected cuts from
    previous material but have found that I enjoy the whole package this
    time around. They have a very Deep Purpleish/Whitesnake sort of sound
    with "TYR". I give it a thumbs up!

    It really does like as if Ronnie James Dio is going to rejoin Black
    Sabbath.  He is currently talking with the band after a good initial
    meeting before Christmas.
    
    A spokesman for the band said: "Ronnie has not rejoined the band yet. 
    They're havingmeetings but there's nothing concrete.  There are alot of
    details to be sorted out.
    
    "In many ways,the situation has been a media-led one.  Jounalists have
    said that the band has a great linie up, especially with Terry Butler
    rejoining, and now they need a great frontman, which Ronnie certainly
    is.  It's a case of waiting to see what happens."

    I person I used to work with was always trying to get me to go the
    thier Christain meetings, so of course she showed how this guy from
    Black Sabbath was gonna be there.  I think that Jeff Fenholt was his
    name.
    
    I didn't think that guy ever played with them, I thought I would know
    of him if he did...?
    
    Maybe he didn't mean the "Black Sabbath" we all know and love from
    Birmingham. ;^)
    
    P.S.  Heaven and Hell is in my top 20 all time greats, Kick a** if
    Dio got back with them.

    I really enjoyed Sabbath when Dio was with them.  However, I do like
    Sabbath now without him along with Dio as a solo artist.  I figure if
    they don't get together I will have double the pleasure.

    I thought the Sabbath with Ian Gillan was HOT!

    Re RJD getting back with Black Sabbath, in my opinion Dio was Sabbaths
    least successful singer.  His voice works reasonably with his own
    material but I find it irritates me to hell and back when he sings with

    I think Dio was the best singer they ever had.  Ian wasn't bad either,
    but I liked RJD better.  Ozzy (or Ozzie in the Sabbath days) was
    pathetic.
    
    

    The Sabbath albums with Ozzy and Dio are classic, but I think Glenn
    Hughes is the best singer they ever had.  I can't stand the Born Again
    album.

    Glenn Hughes sucked when I saw him in concert...*I* could have done a
    better job!
    
    RJD gets my "best voice" vote!

    
     I thought there were alot of tunes on Born Again with IG singing
    that I really liked alot, Zero the Hero or something like that I
    can't remember exactly right now.
     I also thought that Heaven And Hell with RJD was a great album.
    Both have done a good job. Much better than whoever the guy is that
    sings for them now.

    My favorite Sabbath albums was "Live Evil", Mob Rules, and Heaven and
    Hell, and Paraniod. 

    The best song they had IMHO was "falling off the edge of the world" but

    Not even for money!  Don't you feel Black Sabbath music to be sacred?
    Then you really don't want them to get back together!
    If they did it would even come close to the Sabbath of old...Certain
    factors see this to be true:
    1)Lack of drugs and experamenting
    2)Lack of any good music for years
    3)Ozzy is about to retire 
    4)Why would Ozzy waste his time?
    5)There is more money and better music to be play on a Ozzy solo album
    6)The times have changed and so have their attitudes and views
    7)Black Sabbath is a dead band for selling albums
    8)They just shouldn't....for everybodies sake!

    I think the main reason that it'll never happen is because Ozzy's doing
    GREAT on his own and Sabbath is pretty much dead at this point.  Why
    would he want to waste his time doing a reunion thing when he could be

    Buck).  There are a lot of people out there that like them that have

    Witness the recent Deep Purple tour, in their heyday they were more
    popular then Sabbath ever was.  They played relatively small venues.  I
    seriously doubt that a Black Sabbath tour with Ozzy would draw much
    more crowds then one without, and would probably draw significantly
    LESS then an Ozzy tour.

    I agree with the cookster...Ozzy was able to put out AMAZING stuff
    when he was blind drunk and generally f'ed out of his mind (Never say
    die, Blizzard..., Diary...).  Now that he's sober, he should be able to

    Look at the producer he had...

       I saw Ozzy's last tour. Last year I think and it's time for him to
    retire. The show I saw his voice cracked alot and it seemed like he was
    totally wore out by the end of the show. His guitarist Zak put on more
    of a show than he did. I've seen Ozzy before and he was much better
    than this. IMHO if you can't put on the kind of show you did in the
    past or better it, go out while your on top. Then people can remember
    you for how great you were without tainting the memory.

    I saw Ozzy last year too.. and he was GREAT!!
    
    IMO his voice sounded the same as it did in 1983 and he was in great
    spirits, laughing and having a good time with the crowd..
    
    You can't beat seeing an old master in concert, especially if he is

    	course, I can't remember the song titles though.  Too bad it didn't 
    	make it on to the Fontana two volume limited box set, each containing 
    	12 singles on vinyl (and later on CD) of early relics being re-released

    me i'd go see an ozzy/sabbath tour. i wish i'd been old enough to see
    them open for the original kiss. that must have been something. ozzy's
    "no rest" tour was great if you like a group to just get up on stage and
    jam (which i do) if you want to see show then go see a movie. i had a
    friend of mine say he disliked the show cuz all ozzy did was walk
    around on stage. i told him if he was oz's age and had drank as much
    and done as many drugs as ozzy has, he would be lucky to be able to get
    out of bed. what do you expect, david lee roth? heard dio say last week
    that geezer had talked him into rejoining the band and that they would
    have a release around dec.'91 and he also said that his solo career was
    still on.

    Yeah, maybe.  I saw a pamphlet with some bible thumper on it saying
    how he used to be the singer for Black Sabbath.  I had never heard
    of him and I don't think he was actually on any albums or anything.
    
    Funny thing, I discovered God while listening to Black Sabbath (I
    should add that it was on 78 r.p.m.) (Coutesy Cheech and Chong)

    BLACK SABBATH (Ozzy) They awesome I love that song Paranoid and
    others in that same album. I could listen to that song (Paranoid)

    Phoebe, my fav Sabbath album is 'Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath'.  This has
    some great songs on it!  The mood of the album is very dark, but it
    really has the right feel for Sabbath!

    For me "Paranoid" and "Master of reality" are their best albums.
    "Headless cross" and "Eternal idol" are also very good. I heard that
    the album they released with Glen Hughes as singer was very good.
    Black Sabbath remains one of the most influent bands for many of the
    actual HM bands. It was my favourite band after first hearing "Iron
    man" but once I heard Uriah Heep I switched towards the more complex
    heaviness of UH.
    Another constatation was that the old BS resisted  quite well to the
    time.

    was called Time Machine. It didn't really grab me, but it wasn't too
    bad. One thing that was apparent on this song is a much more raw sound-

    Good, then it was Sabs who proved to be the inspiraton for Spinal
    Tap's Stonehenge stage prop. 

	I don't know maybe I'm more of tune person than vocal but I give
	more credit to new bands who use the lyrics of an original song, 
	a cover, right, and rearrange the melody, not completely so as to
	entirely set it apart from the original but use their style to
	make the song sound as if the wrote it.  

	It's not always the case with covers but usually I do prefer the 
	cover to sound as if it's the band doing the song and not them 
	sounding exactly like the band who did the original.

	In the case of Soundgarden's version of "Into the Void" (actually 
	on first listen I honestly don't know if I liked only because I 
	like the original) I think the song looses their personal style
	and is simply a note-for-note copy of the original.  Aside from
	the lyrics being different.  
	
	This being stated with out any thoughts related to how much
	they probably worship old Sabbath albums or any of the other
	reasons that come as to why someone did a cover / re-arragement
	as bringing all that up could turn this into a never discussion - 
	much like the EJ-thing which I'm glad has quieted down.

	Also I find it interesting to note how Black Sabbath exists more
	on the radio today in the form of other band's "new" songs with 
	their riffs, covers, etc. living on for many years to come probably 
	for some people in the future which some will discover via backtracking
	just like what happened/happens with some people rediscovering blues 
	from the '20-30, etc.  Something like some kid in '2050 finding a 
	reference that a current band Joe's Shoe cited some characters named
	Ozzie and company as big influences and this is what can keep older 
	music alive in future times.  

	Also, this is what sets aside staying power of songs that clearly 
	don't end up becoming those K-tell type thinks that only most 
	people from the class of '62 like because that was what they grew 
	up - not that that's bad but I guess it doesn't say much about the 
	song if only most people from that generation still enjoy the song, 
	i.e, new new interested listeners joined along the journey.

	B.S. are form more prevalent on radio today in the above riff/cover
	form than they ever were in the height of their former (Ozzie) 
	existence.

	lastly as an example that's probably one of the reason that I left out of
	for liking Mystic Powers' demo that I didn't mention before.  There's
	some influences there but yet it sounds like Mystic Powers.

    I agree with you, Jim.  I don't like covers that don't add anything to
    the song.  For instance I can't stand Faith No More's cover of "War
    Pigs" because it sounds like a sloppy attempt to sound like the
    original.  I don't know why they did it either, just doesn't seem to
    fit very well with the rest of the material on that album...

    Ward pretty much hung things up when his parents died. Had a big effect
    on him, plus his drinking...This was around the time when they started
    to tour with Ian Gillan on Born Again (an awesome show!)

    Oh man....That sucks.  He still never did much for me though.

    Actually Ward is my favorite drummer.. Vinnie puts me to sleep.. There
    is weak playing on 'time machine'. The part where he has a chance to do

    Vinnie is pretty basic. Ward has alot more style. Vinnie really doesn't
    have a style other than beating the living *&%#@ out of his kit. I was
    watching a Dio vid I have from years ago and I noticed it.

    the new Sabbath single "tv crimes" is bloody magic.Dio in fine form 
    (ie no bloody rainbows and all that shite)the guitar sound is intense
    an all round magic song.Looks like I'll be off to see them in September
    in the slim chance that they may play my *favourite* Sabbath

     I picked up "DEHUMANIZER" last night. I've only listened to it once
    and my first impression is that its pretty good, not great, and much
    better than the last few releases. It does have some great rockin tunes
    on it, and a few that I thought were kinda week. There are 2 versions
    of "Time Machine" on it, one from "Wayne's World" and another version
    for this release. On the first listen I couldn't really tell a big dif-
    ference in the two. I'll post more later after a few more spins.

    album and I've been listening to it for the last hour or so.  Not quite
    finished with it yet, but I can definitively say...


    IT CRANKS!!!!

    This is the best Sabbath I've heard since Heaven & Hell!!  They've
    grown with the times and have a great modern metal sound.  It's like a
    blend up the H&H sound, but sped up with a modern metal production
    style (H&H was badly dated IMHO).  Sort of like Dio's solo stuff, but
    with the guitars where you can actually hear them!

    Ah, but *this* album's production and tempo is much more modern then
    H&H.  In that respect, it's probably better.
    
    However, there seems to be a lot of Satan/devil/occult in the lyrics
    and that really turns me off.

    The more I listen the better it gets!  TV crimes is my favorite song
    off it.
    
    I'm probably the only one who noticed this, but:  On the liner notes,
    Geezer Butler thanks somebody named Jimi Bell.  He was the guitarist
    for the (now defunct) band Joined Forces from Connecticut.  Wailin'
    guitarist!!  I think there's a note on him somewhere in this conf.

    I just picked up the video "The Black Sabbath Story Vol. 1 1970-1978".
    
    It's alright, but I have a couple complaints.  First of all, it's not
    long enough.  It's only 60 minutes.  Should be 90.  :')
    
    Also, most of the concert footage was in B&W!  Even the recent ones.
    Tony Iommy and Geezer Butler talked about the band between songs.  They
    also showed artwork between songs by H.R. Geiger I believe.

     toni iomi needs a singer that can write, dio had his prime, I folled
    Dio since his ELF days before he was with rainbow he has definately has
    seen better days. tony martin from the album eternal idiol and tyr,has
    shown he is a capable singer and a writer NONE OF HIS SONGS DON'T MAKE
    SENSE. He's a better singer than dio, and ozzy, like i said toni iomi
    needs a singer to match he brilliant guitar playing. I liked dio better
    on the album h&h and his dio solo days. dehumanizer was a let down. But
    I bought it any ways. Some are Sabbath fans, and then there are Sabbath
    freaks. I own every Sabbath album put out, and some rare imports like
    Die Young. Seen Sabbath with Ozzy (never say die.) Dio (mob rules).Born
    again Ian Gillian. And also seventh star. which toni fired the singer
    right after the concert. I very much wanted to see Sabbath with Tony
    Martin. I couldn't catch the tour due to my deployment to saudi arabia
    in the army. Bummer.

    I saw Sabbath at the Reading Festival when Gillan was with them. It
    was one of the worst gigs I've been to. It was like Deep Purple meets
    Black Sabbath. Iommi killed "Smoke On The Water" and Gillan murdered
    "Paraniod".
    
    A night to forget.

    I saw Gillan with Sabbath here in Ottawa a number of years ago and
    though they were fantastic.  I think Gillan has one hell of a voice
    and fitted in with Sabbath no problem.  The Born Again album is a 
    classic in my opinion. Every single song on that album is hard, heavy

    I don't think so. As far as I know, Dio is touring with his own band to
    promote "Strange Highways" and Sabbath have once again recruited Tony 
    Martin. The new Sabbath album "Cross Purposes" features Martin as well
    as Bobby Rondinello (drums). The album is released on the 31st of this 
    month.

Del is correct, I just called and found out that Tony Martin is singing on
this tour. I believe they are *still* looking for a drummer for the tour,
believe it or not! And the Orpheum show is the opening night of the tour.

My prediction: Motorhead will blow 'em away....

    I could check out my vinyl copy of it.  I wouldn't be surprised if
    that's the way it is on the master tape.  Have you ever noticed that
    the drum beat "thumps" at the beginning of Iron Man are mostly in the
    right channel, but at the very last thump, it moves to the "center"?

I got Paranoid on CD here in the UK. It seems to be a direct
copy of the original master used for the Vinyl.

War Pigs does not start quiet: It leaps in there as it always has done.

Re: Iron Man: if you listen carefully the first few beats are on the right
side and then it pans over 2-3 beats to the centre.

Indeed the whole mixing of that album is a little strange. The bass issues
from one speaker, the guitar from the other (except during solos), the vocal
overdubs are incredibly obvious (eg, the rising scream at the end of
"Fairies Wear Boots"). Almost sounds as if it were recorded "semi-live" on
a four track being simultaneously mixed to stereo!

    I've just bought a triple CD "Black Sabbath - the Ozzy Osbourne years"
    a compilation of 31 songs from their first six albums (almost all
    songs). It comes from Castle Communications (which use to do such nice
    things) for the price of a normal CD. As I had already an early days
    compilation I was hesitating to buy their first 3 albums but this
    compilation is much too interesting to be missed.

released on the first 6 BS albums. The 3 (fundamental) beginning albums are
represented practically entirely.

    Sorry, but I find the Dio-era Sabbath to be as good, if not better,
    than the Ozzy-era stuff...and I'm a *big* Ozzy fan.  I've never
    actually heard Seventh Star, but it's one of the few left that I don't
    own.  If you see it again, can we work out a deal for it?

    Actually, I only have 5 of them on CD, the rest being on tape or LP.
    Seventh Star is the only one that I've _never_ seen on CD.  Most of

    it is "falling off the edge of the world".I like Ozzy with Sabbath and

    Has anyone heard of two new video tapes of Sabbath's stuff? A buddy of
    mine said he seen two tapes, one tape is all Ozzy, videos, live stuff,
    ect... and the other is post Ozzy, Dio, Gillian the other dude that
    can't sing, ect.....

I just got tickets to Black Sabbath/Motorhead at Great Woods.  I was
wondering what the current lineup of Sabbath would be.  I assume Dio would
be singing?  Who else is in the band now?  Iommi? Geezer? Ward? ??

I just picked up a copy of Forbidden, the latest Sabs album, at the weekend.

The line up is : Tony Iommi - Guitars
		 Neil Murray - Bass
		 Cozy Powell - Drums
		 Tony Martin - Vocals (Ice T also appears briefly on one track)
		 Geoff Nicholls - Keys

This could well be the line up you'll see.

      I saw this line up on the head-less cross tour a few years back and
    didn't think much of Tony Martin.Dio was way better but then again,I'm

The Ice-T thing isn't as bad as you might think, he only has a short section in 
the first tune and it fits ok.

I'm a real big fan of Sabbath with both Ozzy and Dio, but I lost interest in them 
around "Seventh Star" time and only recently started catching up with their newer 
stuff.
I've only listened to Forbidden a couple of times so far, but it's definately more 
like a real Sabbath album then the last couple.

Tony Martin is definately different to Dio, but I think he's ok on this one.
The only other on I've got with him is Cross Purposes, which didn't hold my 
attention long enough to decide if he was any good.

You're taking a bit of a chance with Sabbath these days, as Iommi doesn't seem to 
be able to get on with a line-up long enough to record two albums in a row without 
changes, but I'd go to see them live on the strength of this CD.

    Really?  I thought Cross Purposes was WAAYYYYYYYY better than the new
    one.  In fact I think the new one is absolutely horrible.  It's only
    got two songs that I like.  Tracks 5 and 8.
    
    I was listening to it yesterday, and I realized how "novice" the guitar
    playing sounds.  It sounds like some kid who just learned how to play
    guitar a little bit making stuff up.  Really chintzy and repetitious
    riffs that make Tony Iommi sound like he should have given it up
    long ago.  Just MHO of course!
    
    If you like Tony Martin at all, check out Sabbath's first album with
    him.  The Eternal Idol.  This one is great... he really sings well on
    it, and the songs are catchy and have quite a bit of replay value.
    (In other words it makes you want to play the album again.)

opening), let me know.  I may have an extra ticket and I'll let it go at a
discount ($20, or maybe lower).

Also, this show is general admission, so every ticket's the same!

    Forbidden was given one star out of five in the Ottawa Sun this week.
    Mind you the critic doesn't like Rock music a whole lot so his opinion
    means nothing but Sabbath isn't the same with out a least two original
    members. Eternal Idol wasn't impressive and Tyr hellasucked so is this
    one really any better? Don't wanna waste $25 on crap.

The show last night at Great Woods was excellent.  Sad turnout, though, I'd
say about 700 people.  The entire turnout could have fit in section 2
(right in front of the stage).  Lemmy was a bit perturbed by the low
turnout, as you could tell by his between-song banter (which I could hardly
understand due to his growly voice and the loud sound system).  No girls
lifting their shirt for him this time around :-).  If they did Ace of
Spades, it must have been at the very beginning because I didn't hear it. 
They were fairly well received by the crowd, especially the Motor-heads up
front.

There was a short break, then Black Sabbath came out.  Tony came on first. 
He looked real good, especially since he's getting up there in age.  The
same lineup from the album (mentioned here a few notes ago) was on stage. 
They did basically everything I knew from them (I'm not a *big* fan).  Tony
Martin is an excellent singer.  He sounds a lot like Bruce Dickinson.  His
Dio voice was very close to the original.  The Ozzy tunes came across real
well too.  His voice is accurate and he never cracked.  And the sound was a
little better than Motorhead's (the ear plugs helped to clarify things a
bit :-))  Cozy Powell kicked ass also.  The band was very tight, and
Iommi's guitar playing was accurate and tasteful.  I enjoyed the show.  The
Ironman->Heaven and Hell->Paranoid->Ironman ending was great :-)  These
guys looked like fine examples of clean living.

Oh, and as soon as I parked, I started looking around to dump my extra
ticket.  Someone near my car was happy to give me $20 for the ticket, so I
was happy.  We ended up hanging out together for the show, and he was a big
fan of the band, so he was able to ID all the songs I didn't know :-)

    includes all great Sabbath songs from 70 to 83.As a matter of fact,it's
    got only 3 non-Ozzy songs.
       Anyway, best songs were made under Ozzy's era.
    		So if U are a true fan, get hold of this one.

    best characterized by Ozzy.
    Just to remind that I also like post-Ozzy albums(Mob rules, Heaven...,
    Headless cross namely).

    That has been talked about in the rock-n-roll.heavy newsgroup over the 
    past couple of weeks at least. No confirmations that I have seen yet. I
    also heard Rob was forming a new band called Halford. No clue on this
    rumor either. Don't know why Fight broke up in the first place. Their
    first disc was better than the second.
    
    Scott Travis also supposedly played the drums on the new priest disc.

    The new JP album is supposedly done except for the vocal tracks. If Rob

Just picked it up over the weekend, and was very surprised.  It's better than

    I've recently been listening to some of my favourite old sab tracks
    from the early albums. I think some of the lyrics are superb but some
    I just can't make out.
    
    One thing thats driving me crazy is trying to make out the words in
    Electric Funeral from the Paranoid album.
    
    The section goes -

    Where "... ..." sounds like "Burning glow-bo-fox-een fire"
