1028.2a dose of reality from the music bizPOWDML::BUCKLEYVenimus, Vidimus, CoastimusThu Aug 04 1994 15:3313
I know this guy from Maynard...Brian Sarvella, who has a pretty
    decent power pop/metal band together called...what else...Sarvella!
(Brian touts "I was sick an tired of thinking up band names that
    were already taken!)

Anyways, they have a great bio package and demo, but...they look
and sound like a band right out of the pages of a 1985 issue of
METAL EDGE magazine!! Every record company he has talked with over
the last 2 years has said the same thing -- "you've got it all
together, but this is not what we're looking to market. Our
interests lie in the areas of alternative rock and hip hop. But,
as with everything, what goes around comes around. Come back and
see us again in 7-10 years".

Hey Buck....i remember seeing Sarvella last year at Ronnies
80 band bash at Great Woods and thought the singer had a great voice,
the music was a little dated, but great range and ok songs. If this is
    the same band.

Yeah, that's them. The singer has a good voice, ala TNT...but I'll
agree with you, definitely 80s/dated sounding stuff. They do a cover
of Heart's "Barracuda" which i find pretty impressive.

sarvella?!?!? yuk!! i've seen them several times and found them very
BLAH!!! the singer was okay, the guitar was boring... bleck.

Sarvela! Ya.. I've played shows with bands that he's been in during
high school days.. When he got Sarvela together, he asked me to play
bass but I knew he was still stuck in the 80's.. I just bumped into
him a month or so ago at the Livingroom and I thought he said something
about a record company flying them out to L.A. to cut a demo or
    something..

Haven't heard the newest band so I can't comment..

Clarification -- The drummer has industry contacts. Brian and this
dude recently did fly out to LA to meet with several execs at
companies. The response paraphrased in -a few back pretty much sums
up the outcome of that venture.

It's a shame to have such good contacts and waste it on outdated
music.. Why doesn't the drummer smarten up and get with the times?

This note will pretty much serve two purposes ...

First off, to discuss the current situation with "HM" bands and their
longevity and success in the 90s... Also, what's going on specifcally
with the band, Sarvella (who play Bon Jovi-ish 80s Poseur-pout metal).

I donno...possibly an adversion to flannel and/or an affinity for
    spandex? 8^)

I think it's probably more like an addiction to hairspray. I've heard
the propellants can mess up your mind with prolonged exposure!

    JJ

First off, I never said I didn't like them.

Secondly, when you think of the 1980s...the bands with big hair, flashy
clothes, big stage shows, lights, and records full of hook-laiden HM
crunch chord tunes with male castratta vocals over the top, who do YOU
    think of??

Personally, only Bon Jovi comes to mind...

I've still got BOATLOADS of spandex. What the hell do I do with it
all?? ...Including one incredibly hip (for its time) "BonJovi Coat"
    (sorry JJ). :-)

    	Poison, Warrant, Enuff Z Nuff....

They come to my mind first.....

I will agree that they did do the flashy thing in the beginning,
but they haven't been, and IMO neither has their musice been, that
way for quite a while now.... Hell, when they started out they
were only 20 years old! Give 'em a break!

Would you beleive I was listening to Slippery When Wet on the way
to work this morning?? I picked it up along with 7800 Farenheit
    for $5.

Funny how Bon Jovi took too much time off and now I wouldn't
be surprised if he was dropped from his label. His last lp
bombed from what I've heard. Then again this belongs in the
    Bon Jovi note, eh?
1028.22GOOEY::JUDYTrip the firelightFri Aug 05 1994 12:549

Well it depends on what you consider a bomb Pete.
It didn't sell as much as Slippery but it did sell
    	over a million....

Personally, it doesn't matter to me. I like their music
even if everyone else doesn't. =)

As to respond to all the "Hair" band bashing going on I would like
say one name, Pantera. Thats right, some of the bad boys of HM
were once "Glam" boys. Also take a long look into tommorrows "BON JOVI"
aka. Pearl Jam, hell bent on flannel I guess.
