812.0. "Zappa, Frank/Mothers of Invention/etc." by NEMAIL::MERCIER (Lets make the water turn Black) Wed Oct 23 1991 15:08

I have looked through this entire conference and couldnt find a
note on Frank Zappa. I know FZ has his own conference, but Id like
to see a note here to discuss the unique music of FZ. For the
most part FZ isnt classified as HM, but some of his material is
borderline HM. (also borderline insanity) I have been an FZ fan
for years and have about 40 albums which are all great. His span of
music is so broad that I dont think it can really be classified. In
particular the MOI stuff is so improvised that each performance is
different. My favorite HEAVIER FZ albums are:

    Overnite Sensation
    Apostrophe'
    Guitars
    Chungas Revenge
    Weasel Rip my flesh

What are some other thoughts on FZ and his Music???

I also like Zappa and find his some of his songs quite heavy. He covers a wide
range in music and remains one of the very best guitar players (and also
song writer). "..Garage .. part I" is one of the albums I like the most
(check out "Catholic girls" :-) ). He likes to shock quite often.

Joes Garage II,III are cool too. They complete the story of poor Joe's
life. "Just another band from LA" is an excellent old one MOI.

He was supposed to produce the first album but never showed up in the

    I'm a big-time Zappa fan.

    My favorites are:

    	1) Overnite Sensation (which I listened to this morning)
    	2) You Are What You Is
    	3) Apostrophe
    	4) The one with "Sofa", "Po-jama People" (can't believe I don't
    	   remember the title)

I think my favorite song though is 50-50 from Overnite Sensation.

The guitar solo in that one just blows me away. It's so off-the-wall
and yet it fits perfectly. Not to mention the fact that it follows
two ballsy solos by George Duke on keys and Jean Luc Ponty on violin.
He had to come up with something great to follow those solos and he
    did.

The first note sounds like a guitar blowing it's nose (if a guitar
had a nose and could do that...) ;-)

Just heard the news that Frank has Prostate Cancer....Im totally
bummed out. They gave no indication on his prognosis except to say
he would be fine. At this point he has his good days and bad days.
Prostate cancer is one of the easier cancers to get rid of, as long
as they caught it before it spreads anywhere else. Ill post any news I
hear. For more info see the Zappa conference.

I don't do any Zappa except for Joes' Garage.I love this
album not just for the tongue in cheek sarcastic humor but
also for the music itself. How many of us musicians can relate
to that garage scene in Canoga Park. The album is a classic
but what I'd really like to know is "why does it hurt when I P**?"

    > but what I'd really like to know is "why does it hurt when I P**?"

This is a very commonly asked question. Before I go into detailed
explanation of a number of possible sources for your discomfort,
I'd like to relate to you the following anecdote:

A woman came into a bar and asked the bartender for some sort of a
mixed drink. As the bartender grabbed a glass with one hand and
a fistful of ice cubes with the other, the woman interrupted him
and asked, politely, "Could you please use the ice tongs to put ice
in my glass? I have a hangup about men using their hands to handle
foodstuffs and such. You know, cause you have to, well, you know,
when you go to the bathroom."

The bartender, understanding completely, replied "Not to worry, M'am,
not only does state law require me to wash my hands after going to
the bathroom, but we've instituted additional standards of personal
hygiene here for the protection of our customers. You see, all male
bartenders are required, at the start of their shift, to tie a piece
of string around their you-know-what. We use the string to pull it
out of our pants and hold it while going to the bathroom so that our
hands never touch it, thereby guaranteeing additional cleanliness.
You've got nothing to worry about M'am."

The woman replied, "Yes, that's all well and good, but how do you
put it back in your pants when you're done?"

"Oh, yes, that. Well, M'am, we use the ice tongs."

That said, I can only tell you that if it hurts when you pee, then
you must be doing it wrong!

    :-)

Speaking of guitarists... Frank Zappa sits high on my list of the
all time great players along with Satch, Vai, EVH, etc...

Most people only hear the insane lyrics at the surface and never
bother to dig deep enough to discover this man's awesome talents,
including the talent of surrounding himself with other talented
    musicians.

Actually I'm not a big Zappa fan, but he's done more for R&R and Heavy Metal by
standing up and making a public fool of the PMRC than most musicians ever could.

I respect him greatly for that and don't feel that making fun of him now that
he's dead is fair or appropriate.

    didn't he discover Steve Vai?
812.35GOES11::HOUSEYou sick little monkey!Mon Dec 06 1993 23:5916
    re: Mike

He didn't exactly "discover" Vai, but I think Zappa did give him his
first big break. Apparently Vai impressed him by doing some very
accurate transcriptions of some of Zappa's songs and sending them to
him. Zappa subsequently hired Vai to play in his band.

Like some others, I wasn't a big Frank Zappa fan myself, but I do
respect a lot of what he did. In the interviews I've seen with him, he
seemed to be very straightforward and honest about how he felt about
things. He also wrote and performed some interesting music over the
years (not all of which I like..). I'm sorry to see him go at such a
young age and under the painful circumstances he died under.
