514.0. "Sepultura" by DUCK::PERKINSP (Positive Mental Octopus) Mon Mar 25 1991 11:17

Here's a topic for Brazillian band Sepultura. Their second album Arise
was released in the UK today, it received the top rating and an
    excellent review in Kerrang!

BTW they are rumoured to be the support slot for Slayer, when Slayer
return to tour Europe later this year.

	Copied from Kerrang! without permission:

	Sepultura - Arise KKKKK

Like the lovecraftian beast that adorns the cover of this, the
fourth full-length LP from Brazil's finest, Sepultura have arisen
out of a primal swamp with a singular goal, from which they haven't
	looked back yet.

It would be too easy for this angry, hungry quartet to recycle the
Death Metal regurgitations of their previous three albums. After all
their tribal primitivism is what landed the band in the hearts of
DM, fans around the world. But like the true musicians they have
developed into, Sepultura refuse to stand pat and ride the wave.
Arise is a bold step forward, not as arrogantly experimental as,
say, South of Heaven, but clearly a progression in both ideas and
	execution.

And the friggin' thing works. The title track kicks it off like a
flamethrower on 11, a searing distillation of every bloodthirsty
speedburner you've ever heard. Dead Embryonic Cells maintains the
fury but modulates the pace, while Desperate Cry is the first big
production number and the debut of the more mature Sepultura.
Melody pervades Andreas Kisser's leads, while drummer extraordinaire
Igor Cavalera rediscovers the rhythms of his homeland in a thrash
setting, making for one of Sepultura's most rhythmically unique
	statements.

Murder and subtraction pile on the riffs in complex, dense
arrangements that are never less than precisely structured, while
Side Two fairly explodes with another dose of percussion jungle
thunder and possibly one of the band's most lethal slabs of
riffmongering on Altered State - my personal highlight. Under Siege
is the closest we come to a respite. It's similar in style to Inner
Self from Beneath the Remains, once again underlying the group's
burgeoning ability to negotiate melody with savagery. The latter
takes over for good on Meaningless Movements and Infected Voice, the
last capping the LP with a hyperdrive flourish.

As alluded to earlier, Igor and Andreas have made considerable
strides on Arise, both coming into their own with their respective
tools. Frontman and pivotal figure Max Cavalera has a difficult job
himself and pulls it off, creating a successful marriage of his
bitter world view with a crisper, more articulate vocal delivery
that's no less intense. The raw hate that comes across in this boy's
voice is enough to fuel a thousand effects-laden Death Metal Wannabes.

So what's the bottom line here? Sepultura are current darlings of
the underground who are now about to explore uncharted waters of
aboveground success. They've made an album of Thrash/Death metal
that proves they are for real yet doesn't discard their brutality or
personality for a minute. That's as good as you can ask for. And
it's only going to get better....
514.2not a reviewKETJE::VLASIUWed Mar 27 1991 12:3910
I listened the first 3 songs (partly) from "Arise" (9 songs) and it's
not bad at all. Heavy and not too fast but the voice (again a horror
movie voice) is a little bit comical for me. Finally I decided and
got.. Slayer's "South of heaven" (a classical) instead of my Uriah
Heep's "Different world" (personal drama). The album cover of "Arise"
is adequated to the music. I'll check again for it.
I prefer for the moment Kreator's last (Coma of Souls) because of it's
    technical class.

514.4Arise is excellentKETJE::VLASIUMon Jul 29 1991 09:0516
Half hearted I decided to buy Arise..
What a good decision !!
When I fistly heard a little of it in the CD shop I was not so impressed. But
this was finally because of the shop's bad loudspeakers.
Now I listened at home few times via loudspekers and headphones and I'm very
impressed. Powerful, intelligent thrash with a clean sound and good voice (for
thrash). Sepultura combines on this album influences from Metallica for the
mid tempo riffs and guitar solos and from Slayer for the faster riffs/solos.
They write songs very well and stand the comparison with the mentionned bands
(although Slayer's drumming is unequaled yet).
If you like Metallica (RtL,MoP) and/or Slayer than go for Sepultura's "Arise".
This band has become one of the best thrash bands of the moment. I don't know
their other albums but "Arise" deserves a to be well recommended.
9 songs and all very fine.

514.5High quality metalKETJE::VLASIUTue Aug 20 1991 13:0910
I listened quite much last time "Arise". I think I'll also buy their
previous "Beneath the remains" because I've listened a bit of it and it
seems fine (except for the voice which is not as well captured as on
Arise). Sepultura, like Metallica, knows to combine the changes and
include some nice melodies and accoustical+keyboards intro's to their
songs before attacking with the brutality of a Slayer. The sound is
clear and well mixed. I like all the album but if it was to choose I'd
pick up as the two best songs "Desperate cry" and "Murder".

514.9Beneath the remainsKETJE::VLASIUTue Aug 27 1991 09:5115
I got yesterday "Beneath the remains" (preceeding album to "Arise").
    Wow ! Wow !
This album has only one equivalent in speed and violence and this has
to be Slayer's "Reign in blood". But while RiB has 29' BtR lasts 42' so
it puts even more stress on the listener. This is ultimate high quality
thrash. If you don't like Slayer you'll probably have problems to like
BtR (however you can enjoy "Arise" which is more melodical just like
Slayer's "SitA"). 9 songs in a relentless hammering broken only by fast
    guitar solos. Rough thrash vocals.
Sepultura seems to become second only to Slayer.
BtR and "Arise" are milestone albums for any thrash fan ("Arise"
    pleasing also a wider audience).
    Well recommended.

Hasn't anybody seen the live video of their ARISE concert footage?
This video is very well produced and sounds excellent but it hasn't
been tampered with, you can definetly tell that it's raw live sound.

These guys have such a heavy, tight, together sound for how fast the
songs are, even live where it really counts, no studio tricks to help
clean it up and tighten it up. Sepultura don't need it, they were born
    to play together.

A very different style of album that Sepultura have brought
out.It is targeted at the War,violence and political
struggle of South America, especially San Paulo in Brazil.
The music is a lot slower than Arise and BtR,But Is still
pretty good. The songs "Chaos Ad" and "War For Territory"
are brilliant.Middle of the album is ok,and the end is

I'm listening since few days Sepultura's 'Chaos A.D.' (and Pantera's VDOP).
Well, it's again an excellent Sepultura album ! Very heavy, although a bit
'slower' than previous works. The more temperate rhythm is very compensated
by its killing effectivness. Sepultura remains heavy among the heaviest.
CAD is closer to Slayer than to Metallica style. 'Territory' and many other
songs are top quality. There is no weakness.
Well recommended !

Finally I got "Roots" and I have to say .. I like it ! Excellent sound,
very heavy and aggressive (quite Pantera like) singing. The CD lasts 70 mins
and includes as a bonus track a live version (non-acoustical) of Kayowas
together with a unreleased version of Chaos. Quite long to listen but it has
excellent moments to keep you attentive. More complex percussion and drumming
and some purely accoustical interventions (just a bit to let your ears relax).
Well recommended ! Listening the first 2 or 3 songs will hook you normally.

Re. BG

I also think Arise remains their best but Roots is also excellent (well, I like
all their CDs starting with Beneath The Remains).
On Roots there is some Bresilian Indian singing ment to introduce two or three
songs and it fits well. I think Roots is a bit heavier than Chaos AD (especially
the vocals). There are no magic guitar breaks like the ones on Arise but the
hammering is relentless and very effective.
Mike Patton has participated to some vocals and I think it's easy to recognise
him on Ramatha?? (a song which includes some indian singing in the beginning).
Ramatha?? (I forgot the exact title) is one of the best of the CD.
There are no weak songs which is great for such a long album.

I also listened these days a CD compilation called Deafness containing 18
songs from bands like Voivod, Manhole, Carcass, Cathedral, Torque, Papa Brittle,
B>thong (yes the name is written like this) and many others. Very impressive,
the best coming from Cathedral, Carcass, Manhole (a lady on lead vocals),
Torque, Papa Brittle and well some others which I don't remember. I don't
know if it was released in US but is you see it you can grab it (it's also
cheap). It's heavy and represents well one of the current trends in HM.

Re. Mike
Sorry I have no news about Theatre of Tragedy but I've heard one song from
Angra's latest release and it's really excellent. You may want to check it.
I listen these days much the first two CDs from Forbidden which are top class
thrash/speed metal.

Cheers,

SEPULTURA frontman MAX CAVALERA has poured his heart out in
a tearful letter to a rock magazine. The distraught rocker,
who quit after the rest of the band sacked his wife as manager,
faxed the tear-stained letter to British heavy-metal mag KERRANG!.
In it he complains about the injustice of his wife being fired
just months after her son, Max's stepson, died in a road crash,
and admits he's desperate to find a new group. The Brazilian
superstar writes,"As I start this sad, painful heartfelt
statement my mind is spinning, I'm feeling torn in pieces inside
but I need to get this out of me. What I'm going through right
now is like watching my own son or myself being killed."
The singer goes on for several pages, admitting he cries every
day and is in complete shock. But he ends on an upbeat note,
telling his fans, "Under a pale grey sky, we shall arise again."
