411.0. "Pitrelli, Al" by ICS::BUCKLEY (no one home in my house of pain) Tue Apr 17 1990 17:08

I wanna open this note up about a friend of mine, Al Pitrelli. Al is
currently the lead guitarist/arranger for the Alice Cooper band. He
was auditioned to play with David Lee Roth, but was edged out in favor
of Jason Becker due to Berker's 18-year-old-hot-shot notoriety!

He's played with with Vai (who he's good friends with), Randy Coven,
DLR (briefly), Michael Bolton, to name a few. Al is a MONSTER musician
and guitarist...right up there with Vai in terms of Talent...I think
taht the Cooper gig is just a spring-board for his career, which has
been a long time coming. I feel he'll break out to be one of the
'hotter' guitarists within the next year or so.

He formed Danger Danger with that Bonzo dude...and then Al LEFT them
cuz the rest of the band "took a left turn musically while *I* was
taking a right" (- quote, Al P.). D.D. replaced Al with the guitarist
now playing with Saraya (forget his name), and he recorded the album
with them, but they canned him and got Andy Simmons to replace the
Saraya dude. Al Pitrelli is SO amazing, he is similar to Simmons in
the fact that Al is a multi-facted player, adept in several musical
genres. He sounds like Alan Holdsworth, Marty Friendman, Ynwgie
Malmsteen, Buddy Guy, and Christopher Parkening all rolled into ONE
    player!

Went and saw Al Pitrelli's guitar clinic at Union Music last night.
Pretty cool. He played along with 4 songs on a tape...two were from
the Coven sessions he played on...the other two were just Al stuff.

His writing and his playing have matured since I knew him in college
7 freakin years ago!! He's toned down the speed licks, and has gotten
more soul in his playing. He offered some good insight to aspiring
players about playing and the music biz.

He continues his PEAVEY tour tonight at Daddy's Junky Music in Nashua,
NH. Clinic starts at 7:30pm...be there!!

Buck, Whats the Randy Coven stuff like ? There's an album released over

    > Buck, Whats the Randy Coven stuff like ?

    Your A-typical funk-based rock-fusion material.

    > There's an album released over hear with AP playing on it

If there isn't already, there will be. Al is off the Cooper tour, and
working with the Producer (forget his name) who does Mariah Carey.
Al is currently doing MEGA session work, and his name will probably be
popping up all over the freakin place REAL soon.

    > - Do ya know if its worth a listen for the guitars or is it more song
    >orientated ?

Al is NOT a guitarist's guitarist. He is really coming from music from
a musician's point of view. He does not overplay. Esp. working with
the producer like he does (they both work out parts between them),
he's very much into ensemble playing, which most rock star guitarists
don't even know the concept of. So, I would listen to his playing to
see HOW to effectively play in a band situation as opposed to being an
obnoxiously busy guitarist trying to fit into a band situation.

    fwiw...

Yeah, I'll double that statement from Buck!

I have the Randy Coven album, and was pleasantly surprised by it. I thought it
would be lots of busy guitar and bass work, and I find these albums relatively
boring. But the Randy Coven album was very melodic, and the songs had a lot
of structure to them. I know AP can burn 'cause I saw him do it on the Cooper
tour, but he's very restrained here, and it pays off. One song is *very*
Beck-ish, and their reading of Jimi's "Little Wing" is great - combines the
best of the various versions done by Jimi, Clapton, and Sting!

It's funny, you talk to Al, and he's quick to praise Beck, Page,
Marino (Frank, remember him?), and Montrose as monster players.
Do you see a Van Halen, Malmsteen, etc in his list? Nope! While
he credits VH as being "the best rhythm guitarist around", he's
quick to denounce Malmsteen, Lynch, etc. as noodlers who should
never work with a singer, as they are always stepping all over the
    melody.

Nope. Al mentioned the dude playing drums on the sessions...forget his

Pitrelli update -- Al has split the Cooper camp. Al cites "inability
to write with Alice" as the main reason. Cooper, it seems, is more
interested in playing golf than writing songs. All Al does IS write
... day and night! Al wrote two songs for Alice's new lp, and was only
given credit for one of them. This sealed Al's decision to split.

Al is working with a popular NYC producer, and is currently playing on
lots of albums...Taylor Dayne, Miriah Carey's new one, and the latest
from Asia (although, contrary to reports, Al will not be joining Asia
    as a full-time member).

Al is working on Dee Snyder's first album since TS...Dee's new band is
called Widowmaker (previsouly mentioned), and Al has joined on board as
lead guitarist. Al says "I can write with Dee, and we are writing some
killer tunz. I want to play in a band situation...not be a solo artist
or a hired hand on someone else's tour". Al hopes to wrap up the
Widowmaker album before flying to England to record the Asia lp.

I remember going to that guitar clinic at Union Music
which was mentioned in 411.16. I also remember Al freakin'
when he saw a Berklee buddy of his. Was that you Buck?
He had a lot of good things to say as I recall, especially
regarding the Peavey stuff he was endorsing. Remember
when he asked the croud for a show of hands as to how many
people actually knew what a phrygian mode was? Not to many
    hands were raised!
His playing was awesome and enjoyable, well worth the
$4 (I think it was) admission charge. I particularly liked
this where this guy was coming from. He was honest and sincere
about playing guitar as well as the musical community at large.
I remember him saying that it took a guy like Michael Bolton
to smarten him up into playing music that fit his perfected
    standards.
Any recent info concerning Al Pitrelli? I see his picture
in some ads endorsing Peavey stuff in the guitar rags.
