623.0. "What The Holidays Mean To The People Of H_M" by MRVAX::CESCOBAR (Questio Quid Juris) Fri Nov 22 1991 01:11

    Just thought since it was nearing the Holiday season, It would be cool
    to get everyone's opinion on the holidays.

    If .55 was BK on Rob's account, then I am right. You were pretty
    uncool. You scarfed lotsa beer for which you gave us nothing. Hey, no
    prob, we were partying, right. Then you really splurged, buying them
    Bud minis. Hey, no prob, then you got bent cuz that one chick took one.
    Me and Flip had a "just grab one" policy going, of which you readily
    partook, but if you had a problem sharing your beer you shoulda told us
    cuz then you wouldna got one damn drop of the beer I bought. Stole his

    Now where were we??? Oh yes, Christmas......What does it mean to me?

    Now let's see, visions of gumdrops? No, I don't do drugs.

    Good will to men? No, I prefere tall, blond "young" women.

    A Partridge in a pear tree? Nope, I like Turkey...on the table.

    A visit from Santa? No, I still prefere blonds.

    I guess what I really like is the fact that I get an opportunity to
    give pleasure to others. No not that way! I mean giving someone a
    present that they really want.....seeing the look on their face when
    they open the box, I love the feeling it gives me. It would be nice

    Christmas. For religion it's the birth of christ, the holiest day of
    the year. For others just a way to say 'hey thanks for bein' a friend'
    Does christmas need to have a deep down meaning? Why can't it just be a
    day where everyone sits and does nothing but talk and exchange gifts.
    "It's the thought that counts" may be a cliche but it's the truth.
    No one said you had to buy a $1000 dollar gift just to make that person
    happy. If that's what they need to make them happy, you shouldn't be
    spending christmas with them. Hey everyone likes christmas because
    it's free gifts. You may not believe you don't, but you do. All that gift
    has to be is seein' the face of one o' your dearest friends laughing.
    Christmas is the only day of the year where people actually give you
    something because they like, love, care about, respect you. There's no
    need for christmas to be..."Christmas is materialistic. Presents are
    dumb. I don't want any. That's not what christmas is about" Then
    WHAT is IT about????? Seeing people that you care about, showing them
    how you feel, wether it be through a gift or through a hug, it really
    shouldn't matter. The point is, who cares about all the
    'materialisticness' of christmas....enjoy the day. It only comes around
    once a year!

    He found himself looking at the Christmas tree.
    Same old decorations. They had dragged them down from the attic again
    and taken them out of their tissue-paper cradles again and hung them up
    again, just two evenings ago. It was a funny thing about Christmas
    decorations. There were't many things that remained intact year after
    year as a person grew up. Not many lines of continuity, not many
    physical objects that could easily serve both the states of childhood
    and adulthood. Your kids cloths were handed down or packed off to the
    salvation army; your Donald Duck watch sprung its mainspring; your Red
    Ryder cowboy boots wore out. The wallet you made in your first camp
    handicrafts class got replaced by a Lord Buxton, and you traded your
    red wagon and your bike for more adult toys - a car, a tennis racket,
    maybe on of those TV video games. There were only a few things you
    could hang onto. A few books, maybe, or a lucky coin, or a stamp
    collection that had been preserved and improved upon.

    Add to that the Christmas tree ornaments in your parents house.

    A little Christmas story from /k...

               A FINAL VISIT fROM SAINT NICHOLAS

    'Twas the night before Christmas and one thing was clear--
    that old Yuletide spirit no longer was here
    inflation was rising; the crime rate was tripling;
    the fuel bills were up, and our mortgage was crippling;

    I opened a beer as I watched my TV,
    while Donny sang "O Holy Night" to sweet sister Marie;
    the kids were in bed, getting sleep like they should;
    or else they were stoned, which was almost as good.

    While Ma with her ball-point was making a fuss
    'bout folks we'd send cards to who'd sent none to us;
    "Those ingrates," she thundered, and pounded her fist;
    "Next year you can bet they'll be crossed off our list!"

    When out in the yard came a deafening blare;
    'twas our burgler alarm, and I hollered, "Who's there?"
    I turned on the searchlight, which lit up the night,
    and, armed with my handgun, beheld a strange sight.

    Some red-suited clown with a white beard immense
    was caught in our eight foot electrified fence;
    he called out, "I'm Santa! I bring you no malice!"
    Said I, "if you're Santa, I'm Telly Savalas!"

    But, lo, as his presence grew clearer to me,
    I saw in the glare that it just might be he!
    I called off our doberman clawing his sleigh
    and, frisking him twice, said, "I think he's ok."

    I led him inside where he slumped in a chair,
    and he poured out the following tale of despair;
    "On Christmas eves past I was jolly and chuckling,
    but now 'neath the pressures, I fear I am buckling."

    "You'll note I've arrived with no reindeer this year,
    and without them, my sleigh is much harder to steer;
    although I would like to continue to use them,
    the wildlife officials believe I abuse them."

    "To add to my problem, Ralph Nader dropped by
    and told me my sleigh was unsafe in the sky;
    I now must wear seatbelts, despite my objections,
    and bring in the sleigh twice a year for inspections."

    "Last April my workers came forth with demands,
    and I soon had a general strike on my hands;
    I couldn't afford to pay unionized elves,
    so the missus and I did the work by ourselves."

    "And then, later on, came additional trouble--
    an avalanche left my fine workshop in rubble;
    my Allstate insurance was worthless, because
    they had shrewdly slipped in a 'no avalanche' clause."

    "And after that came an I.R.S audit;
    the government claimed I was out to defraud it;
    they finally nailed me for 65 grand,
    which I paid through the sale of my house and my land."

    "And yet I persist, though it gives me a scare
    flying blind through the blanket of smog in the air;
    not to mention the hunters who fill me with dread,
    taking shots at my sleigh as I pass overhead."

    "My torn-up red suit, and these bruises and swellings,
    I got fighting muggers in multiple dwellings.
    And if you should ask why I'm glowing tonight,
    it's from flying too close to a nuclear site."

    He rose from his chair and he heaved a great sigh,
    and I couldn't help notice a tear in his eye;
    "I've tried," he declared, "to reverse each defeat,
    but I fear that today I've become obsolete."

    He slumped out the door and returned to his sleigh,
    and these last words he spoke as he went on his way;
    "no longer can I do the job that's required;
    if anyone asks, just say, 'Santa's retired!'".

    Jesse and I threw a couple of parties at Vicki's house; BK drank 4-5
    cases of our beer and got upset when some girley stole one of his six
    mini buds (!); Rob surfed the basement stairs with BK's girlfriend
    draped over him - re-arranged Vicki's curtains - scaled the drainpipe
    and gave me severe bruising moshing in the kitchen; BK took a tactical
    vomit so that he could keep up with the alcohol consumption; so did
    Jesse, because he was the one that caught BK; BK accuses Rob of doing
    nasty deeds to Narley-er...an UNCOOL thing to do; Motorbreath gets two
    days of broken sleep because Rob was *terribly* upset at being uncool;
    Motorbreath says it's uncool to dwell on these things; Rob decides he's
    been USED; Motorbreath still thinks it's uncool to dwell on these
    things; BK demands $10 for gas to drive to NH to collect Rob; we only
    give him $5 because we stole his car the night before to hit the liquor
    store; and so on.

    I think we should take a look at the word holiday. Basically it's
    composed of two words 'holi' and 'day'. The word 'Holi' is the
    Scandanavian derivative of holey which is an adjective used to describe
    things that have holes. One can probably imagine Vikings in the
    early days celebrating their 'holi'day by parading about in holey
    underwear as they plundered European villages.

    What the Holidays mean to me:

    The true (mean) spirit of X-mas:

    	1) A lady trying to convince a too-savvy store manage
    	   that because the CD she was trying to buy was obviously
    	   mis-marked the store should honor the price: $.99 for
    	   the newest Beatles album. She probably even switched
    	   the tags herself - looked the type at least

    	2) People fighting over a mall parking spot when another parking
    	   spot about 10 yards away is wide open

    	3) A bitchly lady threatening her kid that Santa isn't going to
    	   stop at their house if he keeps acting like a "little sh_t".

    Ah yes... another day at the mall during X-mas....
