Conference napalm::heavy_metal

    
    I know the guy (Tom Hayes) from TVR Promotions who handle's Shy's 
    European gigs (same guy I asked to put some shows together for Satyr, 
    but the band never sent me any biogs - HINT HINT Bonzo!!!).
                                
    Anyway, back to Shy - I have a tape of "Misspent Youth" and its okay,
    a bit poppy sounding though.

        These Brummi guys have been goin' a while haven't they ? I have 
      "Excess All Areas" and "Misspent Youth", but there are two albums
    before these two,, although i have never seen copies of them. I don't
    like their new sound as much as i did on "Excess...". Good band, pity
    record companies in the UK didn't give 'em a fair deal and pissed 'em 
    around so much. The new album sounds like it was recorded through a tin
    can, still hope it does well for them. It's depressing to see another 
    band have to go to the US to earn a living due to lack of music
    industry/media/fan support here.

    I agree with you Giles, also the sodding taxes in this country drive
    a lot of bands out (eg Whitesnake).

    
    	Either these guys changed their name recently, or the title
    	of the note is wrong.
    
    	I heard a song called "Give It all You Got" by Shy England,
    	and the album name "Misspent Youth" sounds quite familiar.
    	I liked the song quite a bit, and the guitar was good too.
    
    	I'll modify the title for now, until I get informmation to
    	the contrary.

I just had a thought (yes, I'll go find a darkened room in a moment). We have
two bands in this conference who have "confusing" names:

	(London) Quireboys
	Shy (England)

Would they, by any chance, be on the same label or on related labels?

I detect here a very desparate attempt by a PR person to say these bands
aren't American. Either that or someone's really fouled up somewhere over
band names and that should prove an interesting legal case to watch! :-)

    Well Kaz,
    
    Overseas, these bands are obviously called Shy England and London
    Quireboys, here in England (where the both originated from) they
    are known live, on MTV, in the music media, on their albums and to 
    their fans as just 'Shy' and 'The Quireboys'.
    
    Kaz, *you* figure out which is more likely to be accurate 8^).

    	"SHY ENGLAND: Misspent Youth" (one dagger out of four)
    
    	Originally, this band was called Shy; then they futzed with it,
    	and now they're saddled with this unwieldy handle.  After
    	listening to this tepid release, I think they should've just
    	changed it to "Safe" instead.
    
    	The album opens strongly with "Give It All You Got," which 
    	contains some of the most drop-dead, note-for-note, Def
    	Leppardisms since the Sheffield lads' last gazillion
    	seller.  The pilfering continues with diminishing results on
    	the next cut, "Burnin' Up."  Just when you think producer
    	Roy Thomas Baker is borrowing production tricks from the man
    	who was once his engineer -- Leppard producer John "Mutt"
    	Lange -- the soundalike s yndrome stops dead in the tracks.
    
    	No matter who originated this studio magic, it does create	
    	glorious, state-of-the-art sonic cathedrals; but you only
    	get the high-gloss treatment on these two songs -- the probable
    	single and its follow-up.  From then on out it sounds like
    	Baker phoned in the mixes from his Rolls -- with predictable
    	results.
    
    	Singer Tony Mills sports an unnerving vocal resemblance to
    	Dennis DeYoung of Styx on the ballads while, elsewhere,
    	guitarist Steve Harris sounds like he's pulling off the 
    	unenviable feat of playing variations of the same compressed/
    	delayed-to-the-max solo every other cut.
    
    	Hopefully they'll have 86'd the Velveeta housebroken rock next 
    	time out and realized their true potential.  Until then you'll
    	find me over in the corner with my Soundgarden and Faith No
    	More turned up to stun  Those guys are in no way Shy.

    	I got the album last week, and played it through once so
    	far.  I like it.
    
    	The lead singer has a great voice with alot of range, and
    	the guitarist burns on some of the songs.  I skipped the
    	ballads, so don't ask me about them.

    I've saw this band twice,both times by error.The first time they were
    supporting Meatloaf and the second Gary Moore.The guitarist is very
    good and the singer has quite a good voice unfortunalely he is an
    idiot.His raps on stage stuck too!
