595.0. "HOT covers" by MARKER::BUCKLEY (Motor Man) Thu Jul 06 1989 21:23

Hey there metal noters of death...

This note is NOT to be misconstrued as a discussion on some statistic
which relates to the percentage of home accidents which involve
culinary utensils, rather, its a discussion pertaining to those songs
which have been updated and redone by a past of current metal band
which you think was done well or particularly like. You can also
lament on which covers you think were done poorly, but pleeease, lets
refrain from such mindless statements as "that tune sux!". Got an
opinion? Back it up with facts!!

    Have at it...

I rather like the current Great White cover of Mott the Hoople's
"Once Bitten, Twice Shy", but I know Cat doesn't fancy it that much.

I think Racer X's version of David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream" is way
hot! Find it on their Second Heat lp.

    Also noteworthy is G `n' R's cover of Dylan's "Knockin on Heaven's
Door"! Until now, there have been two live versions floating about
(one on the flipside of the Welcome to the Jungle 45), but hopefully
they'll record a studio version of it and include it on their next lp.

Now, Poison's cover of Kiss' "Rock n Roll All Nite" I think is way
lame...I think the production is lacking on it, and it took the umph
out of the original version, but hey, that's Poison for you.

Judas Priest gas a good eye for potential in a cover tune!!

One of the best EVER is definitely "The Green Manalishi"
originally written by Mick Fleetwood. (I dont know if he ever performed
    it?)

The original was done by War.

re: -.2

I'm not a big fan of Crue's version of Jailhouse Rock. But ZZ Top does a
pretty decent version of it on their 'Fandango' album.

Oh, BTW - I've give White Lions cover of "Radar Love" a feww more listens, and
it really isn't as bad as I made it out to be. I still the drums bite the big
one, but the guitar is pretty cool, Tramp even sounds half-decent on it, and
it retains a lot of the feel of the original. Not bad....

"Hey Joe" was originally done by The Leaves. It was pretty much a standard in
the late 60's, so tons of bands covered it.

Another good cover that popped into my mind - "Whiter Shade of Pale" by HSAS
(Hagar, Schon, Arronson, Shrieve) was great - one of the few times I may have
like a cover better than the original!

IMO, Dave's shining moment is on the live album (damn, the title escapes me at
the moment). Its the one that came out in the late 70's, with killer versions
of "Low Budget", "Catch Me Now I'm Falling", "Where Have All The Good Times
Gone", "Stop Your Sobbing", "Superman", and a shimmmering version of
"Celluloid Heroes". Dave was in top form at that time, and proved himself to
be a guitarist to reckon with.

Sorry about the slight rathole....

that particular (old moldy) song was a poor choice.

...besides, the song's too long, it seems it'll never end.

I don't like the White Lion cover of _Radar Love_ primarily for
    three reasons...

    1) The bass part, which drove the original song's groove, is subtle
in the WL mix and thus not effective at all!

    2) Vito's guitar fills inbetween the vocal lines are boring...they
all end on the "1" (F#) and sound predictable after a while!

    3) Mike Tramp's vocal performance sounds utterly uninspired and
canned. They should have let the bassist sing that one!

Bingo!! That's the reason I wasn't impressed with it at
first. But after a while I looked past the fills and
    	realized I liked the song.

The Scorpions version of "I Can't Explain" is one of those rarities in rock
for me - a cover that's actually better than the original!!! Although I'm a
big Who fan, I never like that song too much. But the Scorps did a great job
on it, and it really moves along. Love it!!!

Bon Jovi's "Boys Are Back in Town" sounds pretty good also. Its pretty
faithful to the original, but it sounds like the band had a really good time
recording it, and that feeling is infectious.

Ace Frehley's "Do Ya" has a nice feel to it, but its ruined by the vocals.
Ace should shut up and hire a singer ("Hello? Is Joe Turner there? Tell him
its Ace calling...").

Just my $.02 on what I've heard on the radio lately....

I actually like a lot of Joan Jetts songs (except the very gaggable "I

different tempo). I suppose it's the stuff she's put out recently

This is the LATEST and GREATEST copy of the Cover List.
Who'da thunk when I asked for metal covers there would be such interest.

Most of the additions are from "Stairway to Heaven, Highway to Hell" & VH.
As usual, make any corrections - look especially for ?s
Someone already named the correct originator of Ballroom Blitz as Sweet.
I just heard a live version of this on a Detroit station and they said
it was off the new, hard to find, LIVE West German import.

So, what do you all think of Joan Jett's new cover of AC/DC's Dirty Deeds?

"Honey Hush" is the same music as "Train Kept A Rollin'", but different
lyrics. And "Train" was originally done by the Johnny Burnette Trio in 1956,
then later by the Yardbirds in 1965, *then* by Areosmith in the 70's.

I don't remember Heart ever covering "Whole Lotta Love" anywhere, although
they have done a bunch of covers in the past ("Tell It Like It Is", "Long tall
Sally", "Unchained Melody", others).

"Killing Floor" is a Howlin' Wolf tune.

"Teaser" is Tommy Bolin solo, not with Deep Purple (I'm pretty sure...).

"Louie Louie" was written by Berry, but performed by the Kingsmen.

"Happy Days Theme" wasn't performed by Little Richard.

Heart did "Rock'n'Roll" (Led Zeppelin) ... maybe that's where
    	the confusion is.

Lita Ford did a song called "Dancin' on the Edge", although
I don't know if that's the song that was mentioned as being
    	covered by whoever.

While looking at new released CD's the other day, I noticed the
new Joan Jett. All the songs on it are covers, a Doors tune, AC/DC,
even the old Chambers Brothers hit "Time Has Come Today" Has anyone
heard any of these songs? Is it worth a listen? Kinda reminds me of
David Bowie's Pin Ups album when he redid his favorite 60's tunes.

    	Yes, I believe so.
I thought the cover was accurate, but that Billy's voice is
a little weak in a couple parts of it, namely the higher
    ones.
Good cover though, I don't think you can say otherwise.

Hey, Sunday night I heard this very strange cover of Iron Man done
reggae style! It had a heavy sound to it, but it done to a reggae
beat. It was alright....something to laugh at. I wouldn't want to
listen to it very many times though. I hope this doesn't start a
metal/reggae style like has happened with rap!

Oh I dunno, I think the lead singer mimics Stan Ridgway brilliantly,
albeit briefly, in that song. It's not that bad.

The Pogues have recently released a cover of "Honky Tonk Woman."
That, I regard as one of THOSE songs which can never be bettered
so there's no point in covering and releasing it as a single.

I think Spider Stacey supplies the vocals for the single. So what's

    Hadaway,man.

The Clash won`t reform. They`re not into the nostalgia lets get back
for loads of dosh Who or Deep Purple crap. I think they were offered
a million dollars by CBS to reform, and they turned it down.

    "They promised,musical integrity,
just sign this bit of paper.
     They meant,make lots of money,
     Worry about it later"

    etc,etc.

    Er,did they? Oh dear.

    I hope they don`t reform,personally speaking.

    "The new recruits,are not concerned,
with what there is to be learned.
     they`ve got Burton suits,
     ha! you think it`s funny,
     turning rebellion into money".

Yeah, I agree, Kev. It's fine, but it sounds almost exactly like I

    RE: The Sabbath cover...

"Dimebag" Darrel (or whatever the hell he's going by these
days) does an o.k. job on the "Planet Caravan" cover. I
much prefer Iommi's lead snipets on the outro part over
the stuff DD pulled off. Toni's licks are way more burnt
    and zoned-out.

    Hail the original!
