259.0. "Slaughter" by BOSOX::DFOSTER () Tue Jan 30 1990 11:02

O.K. here is the run down on Slaughter.

Mark Slaughter - The Voice, Clean Guitar

Dana Strum - Bass Guitar, Vocals

Tim Kelly - Lead Guitar, Vocals

    Blas Elias - Drums/Percussion, Vocals

All the songs were written by Mark and Dana and the album was also
produced and arranged by the duo.

    Side One Side Two
    -------- --------
Eye to Eye Mad About You
    Burnin' Bridges That's Not Enough
Up All Night You Are The One
Spend My Life Gave Me Your Heart
    Thinking of June Desperately
    She Wants More Loaded Gun
    Fly to the Angels

The CD also has two bonus tracks: Fly to the Angels (Acoustic Version),
    and Wingin' It.

My review of the album is that it screams!!! Mark is a great
singer and most of the songs are very strong. (Eye to Eye and Desperately
are especially strong.) I recommend this album highly.

The only stuff I could tell you he is on is the Vinnie Vincent
Invasion albums. I have heard he has done other things but I'm not
sure exactly what. He is also the man who introduced both Randy(Bless
his soul) and Jake to Ozzy. Oh and speaking of Randy, I was reading
in the newest Guitar School about the plane crash. The article said
that the pilot had a high dosage of cocaine in his blood. That upsets
me to no end. IMO if people want to do drugs that is their buisness
and it's their risk of death or jail. But to be wired and flying
a plane with two others aboard is most uncool. JMO.

I've read several articles over the years on Randy, that's probably
    where I heard it from.

Never got too into Vinnie Vincent, so I wouldn't know who played on his
    albums.

Mark Slaughter was also in the Vinnie Vincent Invasion. This album
DEFINATELY screams. Picked it up this morning, and it hasn't left
the tape deck yet. One of the best new releases IMO.

Last nite after the gig at the Providence Civic Center with Kiss and
Faster Pussycat, Slaughter played a set at J.R.'s fast lane, also in
Providence. It was the first time they had ever played in a nightclub
before. During the set, Mark. S. said "don't forget to tip your
bartenders and waitresses"......i'll bet he waited a long time to use
that one!.....I really enjoyed the set they did, especially "fly to the
angels". i think i would have enjoyed it more had i been more familiar
with their material....We were there at the invitation of Chrysalis
record reps and had passes and the whole nine yards.....the best part
was they picked up the tab for the drinks!. They were a very nice, fun
group of people. Appreciative of the compliments given to them...etc...
It was a great time and they sounded good except they should have
turned Marks mic up a little more.....that child can sing!........./k

I don't think they ever played in a garage either....their tour promo
manager said that they were signed based on Marks gift of a 5 octave
voice and the songs they had seen on paper....personally, i don't KNOW
that he has a 5 octave range.....i've not heard of that since Yma
Sumac(sp?)...but he does have quite a voice and was signed on the
strength of that and the songwriting and the prior resumes of the band
members.....Up All Night sounded really good but i wished that the
vocals were louder....the guys said that they wished they had had a
chance to do a proper sound check but they didn't have the time....they
brought their equipment over, plunked it on the stage and did a minimal
sound check without band members and then they jumped up and played...it
was, as i said before, a LOT of fun......../k

Slaughter has cancelled the rest of their UK tour in deference to the
Gulf War. I guess there were threats going around that a bomb would be
planted in one of the hall, and the band didn't feel it was worth taking
the chance....

Well, guess I was lucky to see them on Saturday then, at Hammersmith Odeon
supporting Cinderella.

They were good, but Mark Slaughter lacks stage presence and they weren't really
visual (except for the gorgeous drummer!! ;-)) but the music was good IMO.
I'd definitely want to see them again....

259.23Mark + Stage Presence = 0RDGENG::GREIDLife it seems will fade away....Wed Jan 30 1991 06:0210
I couldn't agree more, Mark Slaughter looked like a fish out of water,
he just wandered aimlessly about. He has a great voice live and the
band were solid enough but messed about too much in each song and could
have played at least two more songs. I would expect a band with only
one album out to be concerned about playing as much material as they
could and as tight as possible, obviously Slaughter don't see it that
    way.

I saw them at Red Rocks in Denver. It was the biggest crowd that
Red Rocks has ever seen. Mark Slaughter was incredible, along with
    Dana, Tim, and Blas.

They all are currently living in Las Vegas, where Mark grew up.
He used to teach guitar lessons at Vesley Music. Recently there
was a day and a street named after the band. Las Vegas definately
    supports SLAUGHTER.

Mark and Dana did come from Vinne Vinncent, they were pretty unhappy.
They were looking for a band that could all get along, especially
on a tour bus. Mark met Tim at a barbeque, and Blas flew himself to
Las Vegas from Houston to audition and didn't even have enough $$$$
    to fly back.

All I wuz sayin wuz that Marc Slaughter is an ok singer for the stuff
he does. Granted, the timbre of his voice is a little whiney in the
higher range, but it suits the music he writes well, and I really like
his voice in the lower range. Basically, he does not suck as a singer,
but sometimes it leaves a little to be desired.

I love Dana Strums bass playing and I like his production - The sound he
gets out of the drummers kit is thunderous but some of the overlayed
intro's can be a bit of an overkill.

Buck, doesn't Tim Kelly record a distorted track and a crystal clean track
and mix the two tracks together - he claims it adds more 'clarity'.

Tim, if you're reading this, just turn the f!@#$r up to TEN.

To add my bit to this discussion. I liked some of the first album, but
the stuff that got a lot of airplay wasn't the best (IMO). I'd like to
see what they could do if they were let loose, as I suspect a heavy
handed record company hired producer to give them the mass appeal
commercial sound they needed to get off the ground.

I think they waited a little too long to get this new album out though
and may have lost some of their momentum.

As far as Marc's voice goes, I don't mind it that much, but I
definately think it doesn't merit all the hype it got when the first
album came out. All that publicity about his four octave range or
whatever. Range doesn't mean squat if the tonality ain't there. Like
Buck said, I think it's good for what they do, but I don't think it's
    very versatile.

Boy there are some people out there who really can't make up their minds!

Ok, for the purpose of statistical analysis we shall adopt a 'suck' factor.
Those who say 'don't suck' score a -1, those who say 'definitely sucks' +1 and
those who say 'possibly/occasionally sucks' +.5.

Doesn't suck	Definitely sucks	Possibly/occasionally sucks
	------------	----------------	---------------------------
	Frizkid Chris Escobar Author 259.47
	Jim Whitman	GAZ gh

	Buck Rob Chris D
	JJ Staynz Pete
			Jesse B.A.
			Ken Swanson Crazy_can_never_make_his_
						mind_up_Al
						Seth

	Doesn't suck = -5
	Definitely sucks = +7
	Possibly/occasionally sucks = +4

Which currently gives Slaughter an impressive 'suck factor' of +6.

I got the new Slaughter 6 song demo...It includes songs titled:
    Reach for the sky
    The wild life
    Times they change
    Real love
It a bit different than I expected...It doesn't sound like the first
album at all. They used LOADS of sound FX on this album...Not in the
music but in the start of the songs. One song even had Tom Brokoff
doing the news. The music still cranks and it's a little on the weird
side. I'm looking forward to hearing the whole album!
FWIW-Mark seems to be singing a bit lower on most of the 6 songs.

259.116The Wild Life....eh....OOBIE::DAMOREWelcome to the Jungle....Wed Oct 21 1992 16:4230
I just listened to The Wild Life for the first time.

First I should temper all this with the fact that apparently I'm not
a Slaughter fan to begin with, the sound just doesn't do it for me.
Not the previous CD or this one.

Anyhow as for this one.

1) My little quirk with "sounds" at the begining of songs (as I said
like rain or wind or children playing or bells tolling...they've got
    a couple like that. blech.

2) Second song (Out For Love) has "Up All Night" chorus in the background.
Another pet peeve of mine. I mean , I like the original song, but
   let's go.

3) I just do NOT like Mark Slaughter,s voice..too..I don't know, whiny
for me. Same for the guitar work...I guess it's not "Driving"
   enough for my tastes.

4) Too many slower songs on this CD, not power ballads just slower songs.

5) They have 1 song sounds just like late Rolling Stones..BIG blech!

Overall on a scale of 1 to 10, about a 4 I guess. Just doesn't suit
my particular tastes I guess.
